  • The interviewer calls him an "actor", which is exactly what he is. Pre-empting the likes of Madonna a Lady Gaga many years in advance.

  • Bowie so nervous.. still a kid here..

  • Comment removed

  • Tasty cocaine

  • Any more coked up Bowie interviews?

  • he must have a cold. if he was coked he would be hiding looking through the curtains at home.

  • Bowie was doing drugs? Get outta here lol!

  • @treyspr Most famous rock musicians from the days of yore (Sorry Bowie!) were on something. Clapton? Heroin. Keith Richards? Herion. Bowie? No offense to him, but that wouldn't surprise me at all.

  • he looks like he just got pulled out of a WW 2 concentration camp, horrible.

  • Totally off his bin. Sniffing a lot. Glad he survived and thrived.

  • Hes better than the twilight guy right ?

  • I think he has ADD...

  • @Cromag99 haha no he was on drugs lol. love em though XD

  • the Album cover of Diamond Dogs is amazing - I loved the vibe of rooting through the albums at the local record shop back in the 1970's/80's

  • "when I am pinned and wriggling on the wall..."

I'm sure Cavett had good intentions, but he had his pins out a bit, and Bowie, well Bowie's a slippery chameleon.

Let him ride the rainbow, Dick.

  • He's so adorably awkward. Love him.

  • during his heroin phase ...

  • @FynnDynamite He never had a heroin phase. This is purely cocaine.

  • tá cheiradão!!!

  • Such a genuinely beautiful person...people just made so many wrong assumptions about him

  • I dont think I have ever seen someone so high! Massive respect to David for getting off it BEFORE it was too late. Dabbled myself but never to his extent and saying never again is the hardest thing.

  • lmao he's coked out of he's nut! listen to him sniffing haha....getting run backs, I bet he's throat is numbs as hell.

  • he's blitzed on coke!

  • Even on cocaine the man makes sense and created fantastic, unique albums.

Glad he's off it though and moved on from it unlike others, what's sad though is that the bitch whose ripping him off (Lady Gaga) has even ripped off his cocaine addiction by saying that she sniffed it to make "art."

  • 1:44 'What're you drawing?' LOL! That's funny, I don't know why but it is very funny!

  • @TheBookWorm1718 Lmao.

  • This man was totally self-destructed in 74' but he was capable of creating a masterpiece (diamond dogs album) and 2 years later he was cleaned up from drug addiction, he is a genius for everything but he was also very lucky for not being a dead legend as other rock stars

  • 3.50 -Where is the kick? hahahhaha Bowie:What?!haha

  • He's high lol

  • @jrsample0425 A girl ???

  • What are you drawing?! lol

  • mmm

    MM

THAT'S ALL I HAVE TO SAY HONEY

I WOULD DO HIM ANY DAY ANY TIME

HE IS ONE FINE ASS BITCH EVEN KNOW HE IS MMM!!!!!!

    I LOVE HIM

I'D DO HIM LIKE TWO WARMED UP JACK RABBITS IN A DEN

  • Even though he is on something he is making total sense of his words and is in control of his own thoughts. He's great. A bit nervous although very shy.

  • the thin white duke himself

  • He was a cocaine pudding.

  • Dick is being a jackass! Agrrogant twat!

  • David Bowie is from another planet.

  • @foxyroxy2005 completely agree

  • Cocaine comatose, I mean he's this out of mind and yet made some of the best music ever. I mean theres nothing fun about cocaine addiction but we probably wouldn't have Station to Station without his drug intake, and I mean he cleaned up and still looks hot at like 70. So whos to say...

  • Yes, of course the constant fidgeting and sniffing reveals the notorious coke habit, but clearly Bowie is an extremely shy person, so that is an important consideration to take into account when judging his behaviour during these years.

  • TY 4P. Man, I'm glad the uploader gets it. Bowie may be wound , but he makes sense. He is not zonked out. Call me insane but find him interesting. And he's funny! "Glitting from one thing to another... It's like flit. It's the 70's version.' Bowie is a as alert as Cavett, even more so. Cavett pretends he's hip, but he keeps dropping cliches & putting Bowie down for being different.

Bowie was a man boldly going and taking us with him. Thanks for bringing back all the magic. I salute you, Rebel2

  • @thewaymouth -- Hi - I didn't see the 'put-downs' you are talking about. To me Cavett seemed to be fairly kind with his shy & eccentric subject. He was working hard during that interview. I'm not saying Bowie was being difficult, but this was a tough interview to conduct and Cavett did well to draw him out as much as he did - the joke about the controversial album cover being a draft photo is pretty funny! Stuff like getting Bowie to clarify what "nicked" means is a good catch as well.

  • @maxmillion99 Cavett says, some people say 'you would bite my neck' - oh yeah, that's very 'kind.' Nobody thought Bowie would bite anyone's neck. Ridiculous. Cavett rarely says anything complimentary here. He just kept trying to put Bowie ill at ease. Cavett asks, 'Does it makes you nervous to sit and chat... without your band?' That is highly insulting. Why doesn't he just come out and say, are you a child? Are you an animal? Do you belong in a cage? Defend yourself! And Bowie did.

  • Bowie sniffing every few seconds like a real coke addict!

  • @chairmanmeow1973 isnt that part of the act or is he really that strange?

  • he blatently used cocaine minutes before the interview

  • Brain full of coke!

  • Even though he was very depressed and all that, Diamond Dogs is the best album he ever made imo.

So glad I've got it on vinyl.

  • put that cane down (LOL)

  • the guy doing the interview fucking LOVES hearing his own voice. so irritating

  • @oddball392 To be fair, Bowie wasn't exactly coming back with much, although i think if Cavett had given him more time to phrase his answers he might have said more. But all in all Bowies brain is totally totally fuct here...

  • why am i pussy because i don't want to do something that is obviously cliched and will fuck you up even worse than you already are?

  • cocaine is a hell of a drug. i heard he did more drugs than iggy pop of all people. that's extreme. drugs aren't cool anymore.

  • @thevoid99 yes they are but aren't cool for pussy like you

  • one word that sums up this interview..Cocaine!!

  • It's amazing that he did so many drugs and still has a good mental and physical condition. He aged well just like jimmy page. I'm glad I only tried drugs when i was 16/17 and stopped. Now I eat right, exercise and meditate and never felt so good. Life is so much better without that shit. I can be happy for days and control it w/out crashing. Happiness.

  • Where's Ziggy, David? Forget The Thin White Duke, David, forget him!

  • I wonder if Dick Cavett asked Bowie after the interview to hook him up with some of that?

  • bless him I love bowie and respect him hugely. But he ain't half gone really bloody boring these days.

  • In his book Right-Hand, Left-Hand,[29] Chris McManus of University College London argues that the proportion of left-handers is increasing and left-handed people as a group have historically produced an above-average quota of high achievers. He says that left-handers' brains are structured differently in a way that increases their range of abilities, and the genes that determine left-handedness also govern development of the language centres of the brain.

  • Im left-handed, "Cosmic Light"!!! Please check out my art & music!

  • looks like keith richards

  • @67675656565655656565

    No he doesn't at all.

  • @figaz555 that is keith richards you moron

  • He is soooo tweakin in the interview. Snifflin and jugglin around his cane.

  • Many may not know, Bowie is also a born left hander [although he plays guittar as right handed- ie. Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, David Byrne, etc and as those born left handed [right brained], having a biologically larger right brain- Check the books on this (Wikipedia has a good intro chapter on "left-handed") All the greatest artists, musicians, thinkers , scientists, leaders of the world are left handed people. *Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Einstein, Feynman, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Newton...

  • this is how an interview is suppose to be, casual and funny, and awkward........ not all of todays smiley bullshit thats so fake

  • @3R1CtheRED That's because a real artist is naturally shy. These new people arent artists...they're showoffs and can't WAIT to be on tv showing their beautiful faces and wonderful charisma. YUCK!

  • He speaks the queens english here. Check out an interview with Ellen in 2004...30 years later and he's all cockney. Wtf?

  • @mcflyfarm I forgot where, but in some interview I think he mentioned that he's good at adopting other people's accents... Maybe he was adopting someone's accent and wasn't realizing it? I dunno...

  • @RAMUNEsweet

I adopt accents very easily. I lived in Birmingham for three years and got a bit of a Brummie accent. I haven't lived there for four years now and its gone!

  • @clsleamington That's the one! ^_^d

  • @mcflyfarm He has never had a cockney accent, you have no idea what a cockney accent is! He doesn`t sound that different today - over their lives when people live in different parts of the world their accents do change somewhat, it is a natural thing that happens. People think someone is faking a new accent - I lived in London for 3 yrs and completely adopted a British accent without even realizing how much until I returned to Canada and people commented on it.

  • Cocaine is a hell of a drug. Love him though.

  • Cocaine eh!!!

  • Cavett was the best of the talk show interviewers....He allowed the celebrities to really be themselves.....as a result, the shows had far more depth than the typical rehearsed Hollywood or Music business horse sh*t....

  • I don't think I've ever seen anyone being interviewed on TV before when they are so obviously coked up off their head. He looks really frail and fidgety as hell, bit sad really.

  • This interview makes me feel sorry for him. I mean ya it was all his choice and I bet anything that he had fun with the drugs but seeing this is just kinda sad. He is such a great man! Better than this.

  • I love Bowie, but hell, that coke is one bad drug.

  • @tpjl25 no is not! is very good, you should try some!

  • No two ways about it. Bowie looks terrible in this interview. Anyone who can't see that he's messed up is pretty naive.

This is actually before his Thin White Duke persona. Afterward, as his drug habit(s) ate away at his physical and mental health, Bowie decided to move from Los Angeles to Paris and then West Berlin, where he began recording the groundbreaking Berlin Trilogy with Brian Eno's help.

  • he looks like a zombie here

  • This is crazy coked up.

  • testing the comments, sorry folks :s

  • Ah, the good old days, when Bowie had soul - and no eyebrows.

  • Wow, to call him "coked out" here is putting it mildly!

  • He was a big cokehead in those days.

  • As much as I love David Bowie, this was a horrible interview. This was during his high time. I don't think he even talks about that time any more.

  • either bowie has a cold, or he's coked out...

  • "i only just got that"

    hahaha COKED OUT!!!

jk hes a funny and talented chap thoroughly

  • mucha cocaina...lol

  • He´s so skinny and high on coke, this was two years before his Berlin time where he totally freaked out but made great music.Glad he´s still around!

  • wouldn't say he freaked out. it's like he calmed down

  • "I glit from one thing to another, it's like flit but the 70's Version." Excellent. Haha

  • tap tap tap - sniff sniff fidget..

his discomfiture is no doubt from ingesting the entire early spoils of colombia's burgeoning crop that year - haha msstabby, liked that one - (with the band, of course), but also i think he liked playing at being this earnest, insecure boy-genius for a bit.

plus, he probably knows cavett's a smart guy and has him figured out and that maybe his host is worried he's gonna have an aneurysm during the interview..

  • @ deptofrevz you're probably more right than we will ever know, the quiet, shy, anxious thing was fun for him I think......

  • coked up for sure haha keeps playing with his nose !

  • Of course he "was on something" this was his excess cocaine years, hence the constant sniffing.

  • He is definitely on something.

  • The interview is from 1974, but Dave's last meal was in 1973.

He looks like shit. Genius, but shit.

  • @msstabby You must be totally off your nut

    He looks GORGEOUS

  • @u5chi1 I agree that he is usually The Most Beautiful Man on Earth, but 1974 was a bad year given that he ingested the entire coke supply of South America.

  • @msstabby He still looks hot though :P

  • i'm a great deal more gregarious than this when I'm coked out of my gourd

  • sceletor!

  • this is nothing compared to sly stone's interview on the dick cavett show.

  • Oh gosh, he seems completely f*cked here!

At least he lived through that and appears stronger than ever now - the guy's lucky to be alive. Absolute style hero!

  • I agree he looks coked up on this interview.

  • love Cavett's Peter Cook impression @ 0:30 - "what's all this prancin' about..."

  • Ziggy does whatever he wants,

  • David Bowie turned 63 a few days ago.

    Happy Birthday David ;D

  • hes soo fucked on BLOW

  • A coked out genius.

  • A HOT MESS

  • he does look out of his tree on this. I used to think it was cool but I agree it's hard to watch at times.

  • hahah what a gun, going on TV high.

  • Yeah.... this is a bit sad to watch glad he got himself cleaned and continued making amazing alums(:

  • Man! Bowie is Tweeeeked out. I THINK THIS IS THE COKE PERIOD.

  • @Toadbaby7 The whole 70's was a coke period for Bowie ;)

  • @TheJesterGirl Bowie and his bandmates have said that during the Ziggy period all he did was drink wine and would not even allow the band to smoke pot on performance nights. 1974-1976 were Bowie's cocaine years. Stupid American musicians in L.A. turned him on to it. Brian Eno helped get him off of drugs in Berlin in 1977 because Eno will not work with anybody doing drugs.

  • @ToryZStarbuck He did start doing cocaine in 1973 though. And he had tried it before.

  • "whats the kick for you, david?" "what?" "on stage" even the audience was thinking about that one.

  • I don't know how he ever sang while doing a lot of coke. It numbs your vocal cords. He used to shoot it too, but that's obviously not the case here.

  • this is the "dark" bowie 's periode, full of drugs.....

  • david boqie in 2009 still lokks hot like he is forty or something how old is he?

  • He is 62, right now. :D

  • oooooooooo

  • david bowie never ages lolz

  • @MrSuedehead72 it was compulsory then

  • That man is on a LOT of cocaine. If you watch his interviews with Parkinson, he is quite charming and together.

  • Funny, I was watching this and thinking the same thing. Then I looked and saw your comment. He has definately done a "nervous amount" of blow!

  • Ha, Diamond Dogs Cover "So thats the picture you send to the draft board" Funny.

  • YEAH,, NOTHING LIKE A GOOS COCaine in your bolld

  • "some people say that u'll bite my neck..." :-D

Gosh, he's a mess... It's so painful to watch it... :-(

  • no your dumb.

he has a a cocaine abuse and he became very paranoid.very twitchy.like most people who become users

  • He was so out of control during this time... very unhappy, very strapped to his drug abuse. I love everything this guy did or does, but I can't watch this and pretend it's cool to see him like that. I honestly think that one more molecule of cocaine would have made him over dose right there on the show. I'm just glad he eventually pulled through it all as well as he did.

  • Never seen this.

Some testament to anyone, anywhere - That 35 years on from this - a healthy David Bowie breathes!

  • sniff sniff touch nose sniff twitch

  • 3:33

  • yeah

  • Drugs.

  • the amazing thing is despite being "out of it" for a few albums round the mid 70s he maintained the quality and the invention. not like far less folk like winehouse and williams who have become just figures of ridicule

  • This makes so sad. He's cocaine use wasn't the greatest thing in his career... He's so nervous and in "pain".

  • sniffed out his box.

  • Poor Bowie, yes what WAS Cavett thinking?

  • Haha he's zonked.

  • He's half dead in this interview compared to later ones where he's off drugs. He barely speaks, it's horrible.

  • i hate these interviews where hes high they make me :'(

  • see what Coke does????

  • Bullshit. See what the improper use of cocaine does. I did coke once and it brought me out of a deep depression. You sir have a lot to learn about the subject.

  • Look up Sigmund Freud you arrogant sheep. Nvm, don't listen to me, listen to your corrupt government.

  • HAHAHAHAHA! Oh, my ribs.

  • danggg! on some good whiTe LoL

  • I wonder what Cavett was thinking

  • you can tell that bowie doesn't care for the interveiwer...lol

  • lol you can tell, hes sniffing, and mumbling, and cant sit still lmaooo.(:

  • shit he's high.. he has a hard time sitting still

  • "Some people thought you would bite my neck"

HAha. Can anyone tell me what exactly he means by this? I mean, what story that is behind this rumor. Sorry if I'm not really making any sense...

  • Vampire reference.

  • columbian flu

  • haha

  • Nah he has the flu.

  • WOW, he must be doing some great blow, he can't even play it off any!

  • no shit, he's high as a kite. Can't stop fidgeting and sniffing. Hahaha, good old thin white duke.

  • this makes me want to grind my teeth and chain smoke...lol

  • "Some of them said they'd be scared to sit and talk with you...some people said you would bite my neck..." LOL!

Dick Cavett is a class act and probably my favorite interviewer ever. And David is amazing, beautiful, and fascinating to watch, as always! :)

  • Cocaine is one hell of a drug.

  • Cocaine's one helluva drug haha

  • i luv Daves HAIR!!!

  • at 2:11 he totally looks like the joker, i love his music.

  • i dont like that he barely answers these good questions, he's not telling us anything about his liffe, just figiting with his cane like a drugged out junkee...still luv his music tho....

  • yeah he seemed a bit out of it in this one, but you have to give credit to cavett though. he's apro. the more recent bowie interviews are great though

  • You can see he's wired, but during his stay in L.A. although he was taking "astronomical amounts of cocaine" he still managed to record what to many is his finest album "Station to Station".

Great to see this interview- read so much about it!

  • coke. duh!

  • ITs the EYE, the EYE!!! aahhhhhh!!

  • Thanks for the video!!!!!!!!!!!awesome to find it here.
