  • heres a driving tip try at all costs to avoid women drivers :D

  • u need some friends honey!

  • sell it and get a automatic, the reason there is automatic is for women and lazy/crippled peaople

  • who gives a shit that bitch looks retarded

  • so since the fiesta is not your car you can drive like this:

1 put the first gear in

2 hit the throttle until you hear the limiter sound

3 release clutch quickly you might hear some screaching but dont mind that

4 when hear the limiter again try shifting into next gear

  • geez...oil the hinges and clean out the cobwebs in your purse and pay for some stick lessons.

  • 1st gear = 0-20

    2nd gear = 20-40

    3rd gear= 40-65

    4th gear = 65-95

    5th gear= 95+

Fuckin retards....obviously haven't driven before. If you're in 40 and in 5th you're gonna stall it, no doubt. The 5th gear is the largest, and won't be driven by 40K or force. The engine rubs the tranmission and stalls the vehicle. BTW, this is in Km/h

  • if you hate fred sub to me

  • What you can do there Jill is Sell it on E-Bay, and get a New 2009 NISSAN MAXIMA, Driven>>>> Automatic baby>>>

  • You can practice on my stick =D

  • Whatever you do,don't ride the clutch is the only tip I have

  • Ease the clutch and squeeze the gas, ease and squeeze jill, remember that.

  • Driving a manual transmission really isn't very difficult. Just depress the clutch before you shift gears. Learn the placement of the gear lever for each gear. The most challeging thing you'll encouter is being stopped going uphill with a car on your rear bumper. Until you get a feel for the clutch, depress the accelerator a little harder before releasing the clutch.

  • Don't worry about downshifting unless your heading down a long hill.

When coming to a stop keep it in gear until RPMs reach 1000 RPM. Then put it in neutral and brake the rest. It's better to keep it in gear for fuel economy as the car's momentum will drive the engine and keep it going (allowing the EFI's to stop the flow of fuel).

  • 1st gear: Slowly let out the clutch while applying gas.

2nd gear: bring RPMS up to 3000, press the clutch, shift to second let out the clutch once engine is around 2000RPM

    3rd, 4th, 5th, repeat 2nd gear's instructions.

Hill starts. One foot on brake. One foot on the clutch. Let out the clutch until it begins to catch. Take foot off the brake and immediately onto the gas. give it gas while letting out the clutch (regular 1st gear procedure).

  • or use the handbrake

  • Work somethin' out? Ride stick.

  • Oh... my Goth!

Stick shift is sooo easy. If you know how to drive a car.

you do not need much to learn.

you start in first and work your way up.

the reason why I say start in first is because when you first learn it will be easier not to stall, and it makes it easier to race.

you switch gears when you feel, see, and/or hear it for the rph to hit around 2 or 3k (2,000 or 3,000) unless you are racing. it can hit almost or a little into the red.

Clutch and gas alternates. Never at the same time.

  • All this is just remembering me why i stop my driving lessons. Still, it seems a damzell in distress with her car will always attract a lot of uninterrested help proposals..! : )

  • THE CLUTCH IS NOT A FOOT REST!!!!!

  • hire someone to drive you around. LOL

  • 1. Release handbrake.

    2. Left foot press the clutch in, right foot on the brake pedal.

    3. Start the engine

    4. I start in 3rd gear...first 2 are a waste of time, it's sort of in the middle and up.

    5. Push up in the middle on the gearstick while gently releasing the clutch, it should fall into place.

6.Evertyime you switch a gear, it'll be opposite of where it is.

    7. It's hard to explain, i'd have to show you.

I drive a semi. You only have to deal with 5 gears. I have 18. :p

  • You don't want to start with third gear, you are putting a lot of pressure on the engine their buddy.

Start with one, get the car moving, shift to two, watch the tachometer as it hits around 2000 RPM, switch to gear three, then four, then five and then six if you got one...

Also, as you are slowing down; downshift as your speed is decreasing or you can put it in neutral and let the car move until you come to a stop by using your break.

It is relatively hard the very first few weeks.

  • The pedal on the left is the clutch. It's a piece of crap, and you don't need it. Just wiggle and crunch the gear shift around until the car goes faster. Easy. Remember to start the engine in first gear with the brake off. It helps you get started faster.

  • I used to drive a manual car. When I came back in my urban city, I shifted 12 times per minutes (almost). I wreck havoc. Took my foot and broke the shift stick. Now I have automatic transmisson. It's like heaven. I hope it goes well with you...

  • How about I learn to drive a stick, and then drive to NYC to "work somethin' out"?

LOL, I'm j/k, but I think you'd be a really interesting person to meet!

  • Remember to release the parking break before attempting 1st gear...this was a lesson my mother neglected to teach me before I had to drive myself to work in the old stick shift. It's a lot more work that way and makes the car smell when you get there. Thanks mom.

  • Also, congrats on winning the car and good luck on the driving. Best thing to do would be to have a few lessons as you'll get the practice in safe environment with instructor with you. Have fun :)

  • 5) To begin with, shift up and down gears in order (as you get used to driving you can skip gears on the way down). 6) If you stall; handbrake on, engine off, clutch down, shift to neutral, clutch off, engine on and start again.

  • 4) You shift up a gear when the engines RPM gets high enough (each car differs; just listen for the engine noise, as it gets higher pitched it means that the gear should be shifted). I found as rule of thumb; 1st gear = 0-15ish mph, 2nd gear = 15ish-30ishmph, 3rd gear = 30ish-40ish, 4th gear = 40ish-50ish and 5th gear above that....other road conditions dictate the gear choice too (up and down hills etc). and the opposite goes for shifting down a gear.

  • 1st = 0-10

    2nd=10-20

    3rd=20-30

    4th=30-40

    5th=40+

Otherwise your car is going to be screaming at you a lot and wanting to drink alot more often than it should

  • Comment removed

  • you can't drive a shit! that's so wrong, if you're doing 5th and 40 your car wont work right

  • Even when you mean miles, you are way off dude. Actually, speeds depend on car, engine, gearbox, engine temperature, and driving style. It's useless to indicate speeds with gears, they are different .. duh.

You have to LISTEN to the engine, and shift when you hear the engine making too much noise. Then, when you understand this, learn to shift to pickup best power or torque. This is something you need to feel. Only 1 way to learn : practice. And each car = different.

  • 1) Your right foot works the accelerator (right peddle) and the brake (middle peddle). The sole job of your left foot is to work the clutch (the left peddle). 2) You use the clutch each time you need to shift up or down a gear.....to do this, you take your foot off accelerator quickly, then press clutch fully down quickly, shift gear accordingly, release clutch smoothly and then get straight back on the accelerator. 3) The clutch and accelerator must never be pressed down at the same time.

  • Hi. I wish you luck. Having "stick grearbox" pays off eventually. When you learn how to use it you will notice: 1. More power control with equals better acceleration 2. Less fuel consumption, 3. Easy way to move your car on ice or from deep mud (start fro second gear).

    to bo continued

  • My recomendation is to take your lovely car to a empty car park near some spermarket and give yourself couple tries.

Remember to use your left (and only left) foot to use clutch (the left pedal) and your right to use brake (midde one) and gas (roght one).

Also important is to remember to user clutch slowly on lower gears and faster on higher. This is easy to feel even if you do not have RPM-meter. Just practice. Try not to drive with clutch half-pressed with is not good for your car.

  • In simple words lern how to relese clutch without making your car go off and getting to high RPMs.

Do not feel bad for making your car off. This is really what everyone have done durring drive lessons.

Please, give me update on how you are doing.

  • at the beginning u gonna be confused and probably ur car will go off a couple of times but u will get use to it :)

  • wow, Jill I am so happy for you, I wish i lived near you, I grew up on a stick, didn't sound right, first car had a stick, this is a good experience for you, hope you make some video's of the places you go to, I have a friend on here, Jane from texas, she a lifecaster on justin tv, she has an account here to, she just won one to. have fun girl.

  • your views sure are down.... guess u needa get your tits out more..

  • Let me see if I've got this right: you've just gotten a free car and you are coming here to whine about the fact that you don't know how to drive it? Here's my suggestion: stop your damn whining. People these days are losing their jobs, their homes, their lives are in turmoil. And we should care about your inability to drive your FREE car because it has a manual transmission because......why? Narcissistic bitch! I am going to unsubscribe to your channel, not that you care, of course.

  • that was seriously mean. she was just telling us that she doesn't know how to drive stick, not making it out seem like shes so awesome.

    overreacting much?

    i think yes.

  • shes upset she cant drive stick get over urself already

  • @pschlehr She's gonna learn to drive it asshole.

  • Maybe take a driving class?

  • HAHA I am so there with you Jill!! I took a driving lesson, gonna take a few more before this weekend! Don't feel bad, you are not alone LOL!!!♥--Hugz and Cupcakes--♥ Brittani Taylor aka RAT :)

  • why don't you have me drive it with you. i can show you the ropes. lol

  • Don't be a woman. That should help.

  • wholeheartdly agree. good man good man

  • Hey not all women are bad drivers! Women can drive! Like... umm... hold on a min.... oh, I'll think of someone you just hold on.

  • trade it in.

  • Drving with a stick is the only way to really drive, European style!!!!

    You'll do fine. No worries.

  • Go to budget driving school or have a friend who knows how to drive stick, those are your only two choices :-p

  • when in doubt, push the clutch

  • Sell it!

  • Stick shift is for those with a three digit IQ. You'll probably do just fine. Learn to use the tachometer.

  • omg... guys stich shift isnt that hard... i only drive stick shift (cause 99% of the cars here in greece are Stick shift) once i drived automatic (i dont know exacly to write it :P ) and i can say that is was i didnt controled the car... so all you need to do is just practice...

TIP: 1rst gear is only to start the car... if car is moving 2nd gear is ok for turns etc...

  • It's easy peasy :)

  • Gratz!

    I won't buy a new truck unless it's a stick.

Advice from a lifelong stick user:

If you're not shifting don't leave your foot on the pedal. You'll wear out the clutch.

  • I would suggest trying stopping and starting in a empty parking lot first. I would love to help teach you but Im so far away:(

  • 1-10 first gear

    10-20 second gear

    20-30 third gear

    40-50 fourth gear

and for the highway you could go to drive gear. when your car completely stops at a stop light go to first. :]

  • This gear ratio is obviously a 4 cylinder.

Is that what the Fiesta is?

Bleh - who cares, it's FREE!

  • give up. it isnt worth it...

  • Find an empty parking lot and just pratice stop an go. Or find a truck with a really low first gear. The easyiest stick shift you get going is a 94 F350 Powerstroke. Such a low first gear in a low RPM engine you have to try to stall that.

  • so sell it and get one you can drive?

  • Hooray for winning! Best thing to do is have someone with you who knows how to drive so that if you get frustrated and don't want to drive anymore, you'll have someone who can drive you back. oh, and when releasing the clutch, release it until you feel the car begin to pull, then push on the gas and remove your foot off the clutch pedal.

  • only advise I can give is find an empty parking lot, practice practice practice, buy a new clutch plate if you end up needing one, but please please please stay off the road until you know what you're doing.

    Oh gratz on the car.

  • congrats on winning!!

  • wow! never thought i would say this but i really liked this .. i was entertained throught out the whole thing and it didnt bore me.. haha which is good cause i love watching videos i can enjoy right away.

  • I sent a message due to the space limits

of Driving Tips! I hope your experience

    progresses well.

    wanderersearches

  • to drive a stick shift... 1) always pop it into neutral..2) step on pedal...3) pop it into gear.

  • If you were straight I'd say grab the stick and use it like a ...... ;)

  • Congrats on getting the car!!

  • give the car to me and problem solved.

  • 99 % european and australian girls know how to drive manual transmission cars , im sure she'll do fine as well as fest of the female driver population

  • Ask your Dad! ha.

  • pretty simple, go to an empty parking lot over night, practice until shifting become a reflex, it can be done in a single night, so you can drive ok. the rest will come in the remaining of the week

  • OMG HA HA i just looked the ford fiesta movement up online omg u kidding me it doesnt even get released over in the us till 2010 haha the mark 7 was realesed in the uk last autumn (fall for americans) and was realesed in germany last summer god i know ford is a amercain company but god sake u guys are so behind you want to drive the vauxhall (GM in america) (opel in all other counties except uk) corsa now thats fun

  • Ha Ha you americans make me laugh 99% off all drivers in the uk drive wht u call stick shift lol is easy as hell and P.S i dont know if you guys are going crazy because the fiesta is a new car in the us market but we have had them for years in the uk i think the fiesta that has just come out in the us market is the mark 7 fiesta its a lot better that the old ones but i like the mark 6 better

  • surprise surprise you won.

  • you just have to feel it in your feet. the les clutch you us the more gas you need and vice versa. the hardest part is starting in first gear the rest is pretty easy. i would recomend that you go to a empty parking lot and practice there before getting out on the road. lots of luck!

  • 1) press the left peddle down, push the gear lever into 2nd. 2) press the middle peddle and right peddle down to the last and release the middle peddle and your driving.

  • Hi, I always drive manual car here in Houston. I even enjoy it during bad traffic too. The best way to be familiar with manual transmission is to know how your right and left leg sense the pedal. I think you should start learning from the first gear and reversing the car and then you can start shifting easily.

  • now i wish i was in new york.... and i wish i knew how to drive stick shift... uuhh! guess am not that much of a help. lol.

  • get your feet synchronized 1 up 1down sure you will do ok.

  • for my part i don't drive!! Yes , i know,i know... Anyway i did try to learn in the past and i feel more in control with manual, and the easiest way is not always the funniest, no lecturing there, but i promise that during my next trip in N.Y. i will ask you if you're o.k. with driving me around ,whatever the car..

  • Well, don't worry about it. A manual gearbox is definitely the most enjoyable way to drive a car. Not to mention your immediate bragging rights to anyone driving a manual.

Also: I should suspect it's the easiest way to impress any guy in NY. Because unlike them, you CAN drive a stickshifter :)

  • Well - I guess the most difficult task for you is to start moving without stalling the engine. When you're moving it is quite easy to shift. You have to learn to use your left foot in a gentle way (especially reducing the pressure on the pedal).

And always keep in mind, which gear you're using at the moment.

    Manual gearboxes are fun!

  • the best way to drive a car. MANUAL GEARSHIFTING. fun fun fun

  • Wow, that sucks. lol. Couldn't you ask them to trade for an automatic? I think many people would have trouble with manual these days.

  • While every car is unique in its own right, there are a few general tips for manual transmission usage.

First off never shift at too high or too low RPMS. Too high and you can increase tire wear, too low and you might stall out as well as hurt the gearbox.

Try and be as coordinated as possible while shifting, meaning as your foot comes off of the gas your other foot pushes the clutch down at the same rate etc.

Other than that, practice makes perfect. Good luck!

  • Congratulations on winning. Have a friend bring you and your fiesta to a quiet neighborhood (hahaha) to practice. Have fun girl.

  • congrats on the rig!!

  • Surely Ford would replace the car for an auto.

But the only difference with driving a manual is learning to use the clutch and gear shift.

It's easy once you know how.

Push the clutch pedal in BEFORE putting the car into 1st gear (top far left), then SLOWLY releasing the clutch pedal and the car will move forward.

It's essential to put the clutch in before changing gear otherwise you grind the gears.

  • MIKMA WAS HERE.

  • man this movement is gonna fail if they don't go automatic!

  • Your driving instructor must take a breathalizer test & blow above .08 before getting in the car with you. Good luck Jill, you have to pay for the drinks.

  • you can do it. In the long run you will want to have a manual. They are better. Easier on gas. I like mine. I think you would like it. It makes any car feel more sporty. I hope you have a great weekend and give it a shot. You will get the hang of it and in a new car you can not beat it. Big hugs and tons of kisses for your cheeks. God bless you and your family. Congratulations on winning the car.

  • Congratulations

1st gear: 0-10 mph, then shift to

2nd gear: 10-20 mph, then shift to

3rd gear:20-30 mph, then shift to

    4th gear:30 on.

if you're just going to go between 0 and

10 mph, stay in 1st. If you're just going to go between 10 and 20 mph, stay in 2nd, so, and so forth.

Put in reverse if you want to back up :-)

  • Tips....

Tip number one, get a horse.

Tip number two, give everyone else 30 minutes to get off the road before you start driving.

Tip number three, get a boy friend and ask him about handling a stick. I'm sure that will end happily.

Tip number four, go to central park, get a stick and ask everyone how it moves a car. New Yorkers love to give advice.

Tip number five, always remember cats love to ride in cars, especially in the trunk and always with drivers learning how to drive a stick.

  • Driving stick really isn't difficult once you get the hang of it.

I'm sure there are many other posts already explaining how to shift and use the clutch, so I'll give some different advice.

Don't use your transmission to slow down. Many people who drive stick do this. What I mean by using your transmission to slow you down is to let your car coast along, and then shifting down purposely as a slowing mechanism, rather than using your brakes.

  • Don't do this. It'll wear out your transmission, clutch, and engine quicker, each of which costs WAY more to repair/replace than your brakes. Your brakes are specifically designed for slowing you down, so use them for that task.

  • If what I'm saying doesn't make any sense, do a bit of research of wiki or wherever about transmissions and how they work. If you understand the basic idea and point behind transmission, it'll all make more sense.

If you really wanna be good your your engine and transmission when downshifting, you can use a little trick race car drivers use: with the clutch pushed down, use your gas pedal to raise the rpms before shifting. This prevents the jolts the wears on trannys, engines, and tires.

  • Yes, hard deceleration by down shifting is abusive to the transmission synchros. Increasing the rpm can help (manual synchronization like I have to do with the 13 spd in my Kenworth) . You can even shift without the clutch, but that requires serious skills to avoid damage.

  • as a matter a fact I happen to be an expert in driving a stick. I will be more than happy to dispense my expertise for a video about meat

  • Perhaps get a personal driver.

  • The clutch is the key. I've never been to NYC, but I'm from Mexico City, it's not the same, but I guess is closer. Just remember, when driving in traffic, the clutch pedal is the key. Don't push too much, don't loose too much.

  • Had to learn manual right after I got my license because my father's car was a beetle. If you can walk and chew gum at the same time you can learn stick. Just pratice, pratice, pratice. I live across the Hudson river and lost my job so I have plenty of time to give you a lesson but not on my car. I don't want my car exposed to grinding gears and a burning clutch.

  • Women drivers! God help us all!!!!!!

  • Dont crash!!

  • Stick it in the 5th transmission and push the gas as hard as you can ;)

  • It's the same way here in California, you know. Stick shift is very unpopular.

    Art.

  • actually with gears u can drive much faster. simply dont be afraid of it. imagine something like race driving. press the left pedal, get the first gear in and start driving, then, the it gets loud, press the left pedal again and second gear, and so on.....btw, ure also loosing more calories with stickshift, its much more work to drive.

  • I'd explain it but it's difficult to do in text. I drive a stick shift everyday and could only explain it in spoken words so that way you'd be able to ask questions instead of wondering what 'riding the clutch' and other phrases mean.

It's too difficult to explain in 500 characters. ...In the end don't forget that when you are in 1st gear getting started from a stop, if you stalled, you probably let the clutch off to quick. When the car starts to move, don't just let go, ease off the clutch.

  • There is too much to explain. I'd say call me and I could explain it so you could ask questions but if you end up finding someone in your area to help you out in a parking lot, that would be best. Wish you were nearby, I'd teach you how to drive stick with my car.

  • i learned how to drive manual from the intrnet, im sure you will do fine

  • I can't drive yet!

    Sorry (:

  • I wish I could teach you cause I love to drive stick. Anyway if you can find someone that can teach you start off in a parking lot to get the feel of it and also the worst was taking off from a stop going up hill once you master that you are a pro good luck and congrats again.

  • i only drive manual tfransmission car, its not a car if it has no third pedal. Where do you live?

  • I knew New Yorkers don't know how to drive.

No one should be allowed to drive if they can't drive a manual.

  • Congrats on the car. When you get it, let me know. I'll be glad to teach you how to handle my stick. Trust me, it's an easy ride - I practice almost daily. Twice on Sunday. Sometimes it stalls out, but usually only when I'm thinking about baseball.

  • actually i probably would just sell it and buy a nice japanese car ahahha!!!!

  • Typical girl. Cannot drive a stick :-P

  • Good for you. Just keep in mind speed and what gear you are in. Its about keeping the RPMs constant. And don't keep you're foot on the clutch when not shifting. Have fun

  • haha owned jill but that shouldnt be too hard

  • stick shift? is soooooooooo odd just like big ass cell phone.

  • are you jokinggg... you get way better control of your car with manual and you can change the way it drives in certain conditions and shit, wow you obv dont know shit

  • I cant believe that a cool person that would get a bunch of tats, was not cool enough to drive a stick. it makes no sense.

  • remember to hold down the clutch & open the choke when starting the engine (in neutral!) Then close the choke once it's running.

When shifting into 1st let out the cluch slowly.

Oh yeah and the clutch has to be ALL the way down! It's such a long pedal, I don't know why they make them so long but you have to press it as far as it will go every time.

When parking, remember to take it out of gear.

Hand brake when parked, otherwise it rolls away!

If engine cuts out, put it in neutral to start

  • you sound like you have only driven one specific manual car... or haven't been driving long.

most cars now don't have manual chokes. shit into 1st.. THEN let the cluch out carefully, NOT concurrently.

not all clutches need to go to the floor, in fact, hardly any of them need to go that far to disengage.

when you park you SHOULD leave the car in gear, AND set the parking break. AND curb your wheels.

you can can start any car in gear if the clutch is in.

sorry to correct you, but its needed

  • Definitely not recommended to "shit into 1st.."

sorry to correct you, but its needed

    lol

  • i'm in the same boat, but i'm practicing with my cousin this weekend :D shall we race at the Old Bridge Township Raceway?

  • well, manual is no problem here as it is normal.... but the distance... :o( would have liked to help... enjoy...

  • that's awesome you won a car!

but i can't drive stick shift either.

    i'd just sell it.

  • Wow. Well done on the car :-)

  • if you can't find em, grind em!

it's kinda like giving a handjob, so you should be a pro in no time =) go hooker, it's yo' birthday!

  • ...congrats jill!!!...this is y.t...check for a tutorial on manual trannys...it's easier than it seems...good luck!!!

  • remember .... so you do not ware out the clutch ... it ( the clutch) is either in or out .... if you ride the clutch halfway or so you will be replacing it very soon. you will know this because youll be saying whets that smell ... The clutch will burn if you ride it ..... IN OR OUT

  • Congratulations on winning the car. A stick shift is intimidating for about 5 minutes. After that they are a ball to drive.

I tell people "An automatic is transportation, a stick is for driving"

    Have fun :)

  • You did? Jill, that is AWESOME!!! Unfortunately, I don't know how to drive cars with stick shifts, either! Sorry. :(

    -Jamal

  • I drive automatic as I have no interest in driving manual as I like to have my spare hand available for whatever.. lol

  • Pay for a lesson or two, that way you wear out their clutch while practising.

Once you've got it though, it's a much more enjoyable driving experience.

  • Don't grind the gears and don't ride the clutch. Practice in an empty parking lot some where even if you have to go to Jersey. You'll get used to it. It's just like driving your computer mouse. ;)

  • Ahhh, I live in Chicago. What a deal, I could watch the muffins for a a lesson. What a trade I missed !

  • put your foot on the accelerator first then release the clutch very slowly and you will be fine

  • Well I live in NM and trying to learn how to drive a stick is pretty much impossible without a car and someone to help, so I'll skip leaving a tutorial, but that's super cool that you won and I hope you have fun with the Fiesta! Manuals really are pretty easy and I personally think they're more fun.

  • Hi Jill, just drive on over to my front door and I'll be happy to teach you! Oh wait a sec...

  • Yay!

    Congratulations!

I'm not a big fan of the manual but it's not really that hard after you get the hang of it.

    Good Luck!

  • When you want to go into a gear, specifically first gear push in the far left petal move the gear lever as far left as you can and then up.. you would be in first gear. Now slowly release the pedal until you feel the car move then you have to give it some gas or else it will stall. Its a lot more fun than a set and forget transmission.. I have it on my Jetta TDI.

  • MEOW

  • I'll be there in a week, if you still need help.

  • That's amazing. It's good to see you've reached greatness in life.

  • Work something out? Done and done. GOOOSH!

  • My advise is to put away a little money for when you burn out the clutch. :P

  • 1. Step on the accelerator and let go on the clutch real slow until the car runs.

    2. Gears: 1 from 0-20 Km, 2 from 20-40, 3 from 40-60, 4 from 60 to 80 and 5 (if there is one) use on high way trips when over 80 Km/hr.

    3. If you are on 4th gear and slow down to 20 Km shift to 2nd gear and so on. Complete stop back to first gear.

    4. Standard cars give better gas mileage, the motor last longer and you can control the motor revolutions and use your ear with time.

  • Damn, wish I lived in NY now!

Stick shift is the only way to drive. Infact, I have no idea how to drive an automatic shift car. The gears are normally numbered 1 3 5 (at top) and 2 4 R (at bottom). The real art is using the clutch to go real slow in first gear. Changing gears is no real problem.. clutch down, change gear, clutch up. Congratulations, you have changed gear!

Sometimes there is a knack to getting into a particular gear (normally reverse). Most of the time it's easy as kissing!

  • That's great to hear that you won. Unfortunately I'm not a wizard with manual transmission either, and while I do live in New York, I'm about 3~ hours from NYC. Sorry :(

  • mmk the pedal on the far left is the clutch and you look at the tachometer when it goes up 15 you can shift gears or when the engine makes kind of a high-rev sound thats when you shift

  • Congrats Jill! I wish I was one of the winners with you. I have no idea how to drive stick last time I tried was like 6 years ago.

  • Bring the car to Hawaii and I'll teach you.

  • Come to Ontario Canada I will teach yeah how to work a stick

  • just sell it, you can't talk on the cell and put makeup on in the mirror

  • But then again, wouldn't that be illegal anyway?

  • You can do it Jill! It's really pretty easy. But don't ride the clutch.

  • Hooray!!! FixOrRepairDaily Fiesta!!!

I don't know how to drive a stick.

    -UNFAMOUS.

  • don't be afraid. its all about ratios, ease in ease out with the gas and clutch, and make sure to read the tachometer or at least listen to when you need to change gears

  • In our country everyone learns to drive stick, and only stick. That's the way it should be learned. Automatics are for lazy people.

  • Yeah, besides being able to shift gears is much more fun. The car I learned to drive in had power steering, but there was a knack to getting it in reverse gear.

Just gotta be careful though, someone destroyed the engine on his Ferrari when he accidentally shifted from 5th to 2nd! (instead of 5th to 4th)

  • Thank god we're not all driving Ferrari's ;)

  • drive it like you stole it. hit the gas and dump the clutch. Keep the steering wheel strait, when the smoke clears you should be fine. Oh ya you're suppose to hold horn on. Just until the smoke clears that is =) Always remember, SAFTY FIRST

    Good luck,

    -Scott

  • Dissagree about keeping the wheel straight. if you have room turn the wheel full lock.. that way you get a nice constant 360deg view of how you are doing.

  • LOL

In my hand book, it says thats lesson 2.

Be aware of whats around you.

    I agree 100% of you're technique.

    Cya on the road LOL

  • Steep inclines are the worst thing to try when you can't start in 1st gear. The emergency brake can be used in conjunction with the clutch to avoid drifting backwards.

I would teach you to drive a stick shift if you visited Virginia.

Once you learned manual transmissions you may never look back. I love mine.

  • Me no drive stick either. Good luck, lady.

  • I learned to drive a stick shift in San Francisco. LOL!

  • too bad you're not an agent for the bmw m5 movement...
