  • This song describes each and everyon of us perfectly, we went over this song with a fine-toothed comb in philosophy and I'm so glad we did, I thank God for such an amazing Christian education

  • This song is beautiful. The only reason the word "whore" offends me is because because that is exactly what I am everytime I chase the world and its desires over the perfect beautiful savior. This song super exemplifies how we are supposed to be the bride of Christ and his love is outrageous. He loves us even while we are such...well, whores. Fall in love with that guy! Hes incredible people!

  • I can see why many would take this song offensively. But, at the same time, it speaks volumes to us all! Shift your paradiem for a moment and realize that these 'bad' words are in the Bible and used for purposes of teaching...which is what this song does.

  • Writing christian songs for christians is literally preaching to the choir. Some christians like to pretend that they aren't just human like anyone on this planet, and that's truly sinful. The only thing that sets us apart should be our love, which doesn't come from us. Balking at the "no-no" words in this song is ridiculous when the message is SO needed and SO Godly. It's like eschewing the Sistine Chapel for the nudity it contains. Nuerotic false piety doesn't get anyone to God.

  • For those of you concerned with the fact that he uses "whore" it's actually Biblical - in Exodus, when God talks about how He is a jealous God and how His people are turning to other gods, the actual term is to "whore around"

  • We've given into the social stigma of rejecting anything that the world rejects... the fact that this song is taboo because of the words 'whore' and 'bastard' disgusted me... this is why so many people find it so easy to not be a Christian. As I recall, we're suppose to 'not conform to the patterns of this world...' he doesn't use those words slanderously. Anyone who says this song is inappropriate is ignorant.

  • I guess what Derek means by saying "i am a whore, i do confess" is that he prostitutes with sin even though he's married to God.

and personally, this song gives my eyes some water.

  • Maybe the video is a little patronizing. It accentuates the wrong aspects of the song. It's a confession. When someone confesses they already know what they've done. The part that is beautiful is the forgiveness. Powerful images. Only misdirected.

  • Love this song. Despite what others say.

  • This song is beyond beautiful. It's nice to see a worship song actually follow what half of the Old Testament describes us as, "whores and bastards." All of Hosea, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and the rest of the prophets call Israel a dirty defiled prostitute, which in our language would be a filthy slut. Funny how we "Christians" really hate being called out for our sin. Guess what brothers and sisters, whores is what we are, or at the very least used to be. This song makes me own to it. Lord forgive me

  • I absolutely love this song! I've heard and listened to it before and never really knew what it meant until I recently read the book of Hosea... It made me fall in love with the song all over again and in a totally new way :)

  • It is then a song of confession and repentance, which is an act of worship in the sense that we honor God's will and His grace above our own judgments when we accept Him as our savior-the highest form of repentance is joy, some might say. And you even more so are completely right about the Holy Spirit being the most necessary component to give conscience to our lives. Praise God!

  • @flysupertomcat1 I don't think you're wrong that it may not be a song of direct worship. But I do think it's message is founded upon glorifying God's love. The reason the song is possible is because God is so great to listen to the singer's lamentations and take him back when he comes running. In that I do believe it can be considered worship-because it ultimately sings about how safe God's love is for us to come to, regardless of how in our state we have gone so far from Him.

  • I agree with the theme behind this song but I do not support this song as a song of worship. If you are a follow of Christ and understand the gospel, you understand how WRETCHED and unworthy of Christ's love that you are. Worship music is intended to glorify God and bring his followers closer to him, I do not feel closer to him with this song I feel dirty, I feel distant from him. I don't need a song to tell me I'm wretched, the Holy spirit is what convicts me. Shock value is all this is.

  • @flysupertomcat1 He is not saying anything that isn't in the book of Hosea, and that is the WORD of God. This song is Biblically sound. I resent you accusing Derek Webb for creating a song that is meant for shock value. The Psalms are filled with songs lamenting the wretchedness of mankind. Was David doing it for shock value? On top of that, the Savior hadn't even come yet. We have so much more to be thankful for. We are too comfortable in our salvation. We must decrease so he may increase.

  • @flysupertomcat1 actually I see your point, on the other hand ...this song makes many get closer to God. Yes I am a sinner, I need to see it as it is & remember how wretched I am. this song makes me feel like my works are not good enough for God & I need Him, I see myself as in a mirror in this video and I will not turn away from it & forget what i saw. It brings me close to my God and makes me praise Him for His awesome love. Be careful brother how we comment on God's anointed. Love you! Bless

  • i love the message behind the song and i think it is very accurate to what we are as fallen, broken people. as a worship leader, it is my chief goal to bring glory to God in worshiping Him. worship is about glorifying God, period. it should never include ourselves. we should never be in an equation with God except as not worthy of praise. therefore, i have a hard time seeing this song as a worship song. and as far as the lyrics, i have a hard time singing them and really saying im glorifying him

  • Some one plz email me the chords!!!

  • Can we all just have meaningful theological dialogue on youtube please? Or maybe some other video forum would be a better venue, any ideas?

  • Im in love with this song and if any one knows who sings it plz cmment me back

  • @Yevanna1 It is done by Derek Webb

  • Christians offended by words like "whore" need to read Hosea and get over themselves.

That these words are offensive is a culturally conditioned thing. They are, of course, strong words, and that's why Webb uses them--they're appropriate for the context.

  • @thedawgness2 i totally agree with you.

  • we have all turned our back on Jesus at some point..... let's run down the aisle towards the one man who deserves every ounce of our attention and love!

  • will you please allow people to embed this video! I'm trying to put it up on my christian radio blog.

  • this video shows that even christians lose sight of what really matters in this life.. following Christ, not chasing after money or wanting sex, or trying to make it out in this big world.. i thank derek webb for this video how important is God to you? are you stuck in the matrials of this world or are you high on Christ and following him everyday of your life... its your life you choose.

  • There are no curse words in this song. Whore is a profession, not a curse.

  • derek can cuss all he wants. people need to stop.

  • this is one of my all time favorite songs... its so raw and real... talks about our relationship with christ and what we WANT to gain from of it, and instead its about giving up ourselves completely to God , being unselfish, prideful, and the other things that keep us from God, so that we soon realize what God has instore for us, is truely the best.

  • Awesome song!

  • who sings this song ?

  • @XPrettyNxPink15X Derek Webb sings this song. Amazing artist!

  • this video is great. this song is great. love it.

  • i am a whore and a bastard.

  • @hibberdeedibberdee but a very loved one at that... :)

  • I love this song soo much! His voice is amazing.

  • I think it has to do with the fact we spend so much time "reading between the lines" and trying to figure out how to live life and become wise and righteous by effort that we miss the point...Jesus just wants a passionate love affair with our souls so that we only desire to run to him at the altar like a loveblinded bride.

  • the point i'm getting at is... if we are truly converted by the Holy Spirit, he actually purifies us with God's holiness and righteousness... and thats why Paul says "work out your salvation". i understand that we still continue to sin, but i don't think it is deliberate..not in the way that we are before we're saved. I just need a little explanation is all.

  • I don't think it's that cut and dry. If it was, Paul wouldn't have written half of what he did. Remember his letter to the Corinthian Church? And how there was so much sin in a Church in which the Gifts of the Spirit were being Practiced? A man even slept with his father's wife! That's pretty big. Also, remember in the book of Revelations, at the beginning with the chapters addressed to the different churches? Only a handful of them didn't get warnings of some kind.

  • even paul speaks on how he doesn't do the right thing

Romans 7:19 For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing.

We're all filled with sin and mess up so much that is what this song is basically talking about. if you look at one of the verses it's talking about Judas who betrayed Jesus after being faithful for so long.

    we take for grantid

  • i meant to say we take it all for granted

  • I'm failing to understand what the tar she is putting on herself is supposed to be. Is it not by Christ that we are given new wedding garments, as we work out our salvation with fear and trembling? I see that the tar represents her sin... but I don't understand why? If anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation.. the old has gone, the new has come! It says in 1 Corinthians... we take off our old selves which are full of SIN, and put on the new flesh in Christ which is pure and holy...

  • I love this song! I'd like to try to cover it soon.

  • It is a GREAT song! The first time I heard it was after reading Redeeming Love (My favorite book after the bible - you should read it, it fits this song perfectly) and cried my heart out. It is so beautiful!

  • love this song first of all!..a funny story tho..the first time i heard this song was in a community prayer session..and apparently no one elsehad heard it either...it turned into a community laughter sesh!..ahh good times!

  • great song. its so raw and real. and the "swears" are words found in the gospel of the good book. its probably the epitamy of the perfect song.

  • I don't think swearing is necessary, but I still like this song. When I first heard this song, it felt like the swearing was just for shock value, which annoys me. I don't think, as Christians, we should swear. BUT I still like this song because it is incredibly honest. Derek Webb digs into the nature of humanity and doesn't cover it up with fancy, pretty words. I love that.

  • First of all, WHORE is not a swear word. Its not nice, but not a swear word.

Secondly, this song is taken through the book of Hosea, where God tells Hosea to take a promiscous women, who was a whore, for a wife to illustrate how the Jewish people have become Whores to their Bridgroom, God. As christian we often do the same thing.

  • the words aren't really swear words if used in the correct context. Look it up in the dictionary, see the definition, and see if what he is trying to convey with the words fits the definition. And it does. Sorry if it's that's super raw, but I have to give him kudos for not "dumbing it down" for Christians.

  • @christopherwarsh you are correct...one of the most honest "Christian" songs ever written.

  • @christopherwarsh i couldnt put it in better words :D

  • @christopherwarsh or people who are just generally offended by curse words, YOU NARROW MINDED ATHEIST! Oh boy, now we're all jumping to conclusions. :P To be honest, this was more troll than anything, I saw this link on someone's facebook wall...I hate country music.

  • Such a pity that religious people can't look past a few swear words...this song is an amazing portrait of an unfaithful people and the God who loves them. It's Hosea in song form.

  • This has been one of my favorite songs for a few years now; it's such an honest cry and proclamation of our sinful state and unbelievable deliverance that we have been brought into. Derek Webb delivers the Gospel in a raw and unapologetic fashion; I love it!

  • im not a big fan of christian music,

    but i love this song.

    :)

  • This song is so powerful

it's sad how sinful we can be

  • also i would encourage anyone who sees this video to google: paul helbig + hosea he is a youth pastor who took his high school kids through this book.

  • Very poignant song

  • That is a shame. We cant fool God by lying to Him. This song has a powerful message, but is equally potent with portraying how we should be with God: Real. Also, although the words are coarse, they have real meaning, and to think of ourselves in our sinful state as as anything better than whores is a lie. Thank God no matter how many times we take Him off He is willing to be taken back!

  • You know what is sad, I showed this song to a Christian friend of mine, and I believe all he saw in it where the swear words. He commented that this would "definitely" not be something to show in the church. He said that I believe, because of the words used like "whore" and "bastard" but seriously, the entire message was overlooked by cultural incorrectness. Mad me kinda mad, although I might have mis-presented it to him at first anyways. I think it is an amazing song.

  • the words whore and bastard are both in the bible tell your friend to stop being a political correct pantywaist and BUCK UP and start looking at our culture through the lens of Gods Word..... that is our only hope as a nation and especially as a church.

  • @kevin5749 The song is utterly soul quaking. But, careful with the "pantywaist" stuff. Women are powerful and brave, too. Look at the prostitute who washed Jesus' feet with her hair. As a Christian man, you have to be careful of demeaning women. You should lift us up as your sisters. Love.

  • @Theshadowrazor i hate when people remark on the fact he uses harsh language alone. the Bible tells me i'm Christ's bride, and if i believe that i have no other choice but to agree with this song that i am indeed a whore and i put Christ on when it's convenient for me. the intense words like "whore" and "bastard" may not be perfectly politically correct but they are certainly biblical

  • @Theshadowrazor The word Whore is used in the Bible many time, The word Bastard is also used in Hebrews 12:8 to describe those "Christians" who go without chastisement.

  • @Theshadowrazor In Isaiah chapter 1 it says that Israel was like a whore for turning away from God. You're right, the message can be tainted by a lack of knowledge. These words are legitimate. Although they have negative connotations, they are not "curse" words.

  • @Theshadowrazor Thats too bad, i absolutely cannot stand it when people are like that. The Bible uses both words too and theyre are completely legitimate terms taken in their true meaning. early twentieth century literature uses the word gay as happy (like it was originally intended) theres probably hymns that do too, but that doesnt mean theyre talking about gay people now does it?

In Matthew 5:22 Jesus "swears" also. I dont know just my thoughts.

One of the most beautiful songs ever <3

  • @Theshadowrazor I am not sure if you will see this since, it is my first time watching this video and yes my first time hearing Brother Webb, but you can share with your friend this: The word Bastard appears 3X in the KJV Bible, Deut 23:2, Zech 9:6 Hebrews 12:8 and the word Whore appears 65 times, and the word dung (meaning crap) twice and Paul once told the Jews that he would rather the ones leading them astray they cut off thier penis'. Tell ur friend his church is soft & needs to get with GOD

  • @Theshadowrazor the words are not used in a profane way. The literal definition fits the song very well. You're right, it's sad people have those hang ups.

  • this song is SO incredibly strong. the lyrics are so true. and the video is amazing. thank you for putting this on here.

  • such a beutiful song, the first time i heard it our preachers son sang it at church, its so pretty!

  • This was a beutiful video, it was the first time i heard this song and because of the way you dispayed it i now love the song and understand its meaning. Thank you so much.

Christ Bless you and your ministry.

  • Amazing video. Thank you for your contribution.

  • walk slowly down this road, God is a loving God, but He is also Just.

You should not believe your conscience and your feelings more than the Word which the Lord who receives sinners preaches to you.

    Martin Luther

  • Amen, ken1Moore, Jesus came to fulfill the law, not to abolish it. All praise be to the Lord our God.

  • Our leader showed us this video for wake up weekend. it was fantastic. i think it's brilliant. great job! :)
