Thanks for tracks from this great, rare album. Do you happen to have other tracks from it like 'Same Old Song', 'Need Your Loving', 'Reach Out', 'Can't Hurry Love' & 'Can't Help Myself' ?
There are the best, then there's the rarified air that only a select few can reach. Levi Stubbs is among them. In this tune the man puts on a workshop on performing ballads. He goes from a whisper to an operatic baritone in a matter of seconds. And he doesn't "give it all away" by melissmizing all over the place as today's singers are wont to do. He was a seasoned pro who proved that less can be more in the hands of a master. We were lucky to have had him for all these years.
ajveda, we all are entitled to our own opinions! In my ears as well as MANY others Levi Stubbs was ONE of the BEST interpreters of music! Berry Gordy spoke of Levi Stubbs and stated some singers come along once in a llifetime but a Levi Stubbs comes along ONCE period! I totally agree
@memee7 I agree about Levi - so many great and I mean great leads out of Motown in the 60's --- Marvin wa smooth kind of like Sam Cook - Smokey was sweet and later Micheal Jackson was a bit like him too -David Ruffin was oh so temting but to me - Levi was THE MAN ! RIP Sam, David, Marvin, Michael and Levi ... our world is lessened wit your passing...
Yea but how many Tops songs have you actually listened to? Im sure a lot less than Cookes, Gayes and Williams, listen to the unreleased songs and not just one or two of his mainstream songs, then let me know
LEVI has total control of the vocal. He uses it and delivers it as though it was an instrument, producing nothing but "free flowing" improv of his creative artistry.
THIS IS SOUL MUSIC at it's most elevated form;
natural and unpredictable. I loved the groove of the song also; slightly slowed down from the hit record version; so that LEVI could caress it and work his magic on it.
wes170 has truly given us ALL something special here. Thanks for this. Brilliant !
I saw the Tops in Lake Tahoe before cordless mics.....they sounded fabulous, but working their steps around those cords w/o every missing a beat or step.....was almost as phenomenal as their sound.
This is a wonderful post of his voice....Just pure Levi, taking his time, giving his all, singing it the way he wanted....Ill bet the Angelic Choir can hardly wait to have you with them...
Superb!!!!!!!!

I ordered this album from TV Guide as a 10 year old kid. Of course I could not pay for it (I ordered about 10 albums) They threatened to sue me.
I think I STILL owe them money ...to this DAY! LOL
(PS/ Check out my Levi impression on Youtube)
