This song is about an alcoholic who's pleading with a girl not to come back to him (don't give up on your dreams, don't give up on the wanting for a better life) because it'll ruin her and her future but in the end, he begs her not to tear the two of them in half, just because he wants her to, for the better of her future.

This is infact, the mindset of a self-aware alcoholic. They want you to go but they want you to stay.
