The Aztecs were worse then the Spanish. Read the history, even accounts from the other first nations in Mesoamerica talk about how the Spanish, as bad as they were, were still better then the Aztecs. To say the Spanish defeated the Aztecs is also foolish. Who do you think won the battle, 600 Spaniards, or 50000 other Mesoamericans? The Aztecs were hated by all, and the Spanish simply were a standard around with others gathered to destroy the hated Aztecs.

@Mrblancnoir I'm afraid not. All the professions of the Spanish being better are either post-Conquestion revisionism or pre-Conquest nativity.  It is true that the Aztecs were hated, but the treatment of natives following Spain's consolidation of the region was the people were so brutalized that even many of the Spanish themselves were horrified - but too afraid to speak out due to fear of the Inquisition. Read the history, not just parts of it.

I don't know about things having had been better. Human sacrifice and cannibalism was a major part of Aztec society and completely discusting. At least the Spanish and the Catholic Church got rid of that. It seems to me that the Catholic Church was a lesser of two evils. Not everything brought from the Europe was bad.

The Aztecs were victims of circumstance and ill leadership. The Spanish were lucky and fortuitous in the way they used politics; they were much more "savvy" as the Europeans had been adept at this practice for centuries.

The whole endgame of the conquest is a story for the ages because of it's uncanny mechanisms for the ultimate fall from power.
