So many sports trying to enter in the Olympics and they let a SUBCATEGORY of a sport comes in. Unbelievable. The fact that a small country like Fiji can win a medal isn't a quality of a sport. Actually it shows how it's not spreaded around the world. Reason rugby is in the olympics: it's relatively popular in English-speaking countries. Futsal should be in the Olympics, not rugby.
@GustavoCLa i know right? like who would let subcategories of sports into the olympics, like why don't they just have one running race instead of all these stupid 100m, 200m, 400m etc.... and so many different types of swimming? and so you're supposing they allow indoor football in when football's already an olympic sport? 7s is in cos it's fast and exciting to watch and a fantastic sport. and 7s is also popular in other countries, such as Argentina and it is growing in the Netherlands
@Chrislaar Tottaly different story. Athletes of futsal spend their hole career playing futsal. It's not a subcategory of football. While rugby 7 seems to be a sort of entertainment for rugby 15 players and fans. I'm becoming more tolerant to rugby 7 in the Olympics but I still think itl lacks the global popularity to justify it. It's very popular in some 10 countries but in the remaining 190 it barely exists. Futsal is definetly more spreaded.
@GustavoCLa Countries where 7s is popular: NZ, SA, Australia, UK, Ireland, USA, Russia, Kenya, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Argentina, Portugal, Papua New Guinea, UAE, Hong Kong, Canada and it's growing still. and several players have played 7s for most of their career, eg Ben Gollings, Uale Mai and DJ Forbes. It's also used as a development tool for young up and coming stars of test rugby, such as a young Jonah Lomu
Rugby has never made it to the Olympics because its gone against great sports like baton waving. how i miss those little people dancing and prancing and waving those colorful ribbons. those were the good old days!
@nocountry4oldgators for your information it was part of the Olympics many years ago and is being reinstated...the USA were Olympic champs in Rugby then apparently!
@nflizsoft6 i too think 15s is a better game but 7s i more suited for the Olympics since it only lasts for 2 and ½ weeks. You couldnt play enough 15's games, the players need time to recover
I will try to watch all Rugby Sevens' games in Rio 2016. And the games will be placed in my soccer team stadium. So, nice way to find out a new passion in a place I already know very well.
Sevens makes sense because it fast and entertaining and still has the awesomeness of rugby.

Why are they only allowing Sevens in? what's wrong with 15 man sides?
Theriot6592 1 year ago
they should have done rugby 15 man traditional style for olympics, 7s is a no skill spinoff of rugby union.

Sevens is very compelling to watch, even if you know nothing about Rugby.
Look at baseball, American football, Cricket and Golf are all sports that are drearyily boring if you on't know what's going on...

They may as well give the gold medal to the South African Springboks now. At long last South Africa can win an Olympic medal!
About time the olympics woke up and realised the have one too many Yankie sports. Baseball, basketball and softball was a bit ridiculous.
Now we've just got to get cricket in the Olympics.
