  • V8 R8 is not a drag racing car…great track car and will put a good beat down on a lot of cars on the track, but just doesn't have the "umpf" for drag racing. The Jag has more HP and more torque which is better for drag racing, just like American cars are. Now use the V10 R8 and I am sure the results are different. Not to mention, Jags are ugly cars to begin with, and I don't care if it costs less than an R8, I will still get the R8…German engineering baby!

  • @deutchcarlove Judging by your name you're obviously a fanboy and are opinionated towards German cars. People have different tastes and I do not like the R8 at all. And at least in the Jag I can carry 3 other people and put more stuff in the back while trouncing the R8 makes it better for me.

My taste is the Audi R8 and I think the Jaguar is ugly, so what's the issue with you attacking my claim? I never directly replied to you, I just replied to the video, so it's nothing personal. Have fun "trouncing" the R8 with your 3 passengers. Not everyone likes the R8 and I know that but I don't attack them for it. So ease down tiger…or in your case jaguar.

  • @zid00001 Well the Gallardo was developed after Audi bought them out…so yes the German company Audi collaborated with the design and engineering of that engine for the Gallardo.  Even though the V10 in the R8 SHARES the same platform as the Gallardo…they are not exactly the same. I am not hating on the Jag. It's a nicely engineered car, just don't like the design of it compared to the R8…no offense if you have one, enjoy it.

    BM has more gears, but generates it's power at higher revs, Jag has less gears, but waaaaaaaaay more torque, which it generates far earlier.

    Jag does everything the BM does, but can be quiet and smooth. Caddy is a straight line burner. fast, but no finese

  • The XFR has under the hood a supercharged engine 5.0L with 510 Hp and the R8 V8 has only a 4.2L with 420Hp, right there there is a difference of 90 Hp. Put them on a track and then lets see what happens. The R8 has a superb stability and can takes curves at speed you cant imagine. I own a 2010 XF supercharged and it is an amazing car and I have the opportunity of driving the R8 V8 and V10 with 525 Hp( I sell them) they are great cars.

  • The Jag shape is probably a fair bit more aero.

  • It is, actually, the Jag has a drag coefficient of 0.29 and the R8 has 0.35, but that is not a HUGE difference anyway. For instance one of the lowest drag coefficients is achieved by the new Merc E-Class, which has 0.24 drag! That is awesome. The lower your drag, the lower the wind noise and fuel consumption.

  • Although that might be true, M5s are probably the ugliest cars available on the market. Where as the XFR and XKR are probably the most gorgeous under 100k in both the sedan and coupe market. I rather have a car that is always gorgeous vs. one that is faster some of the time on track days.

  • @m5boarddotcom It is marginally faster on tracks, but with a supercharger and one of the best torque curves of any car, the XFR has more mid range pull.

    i.e the BM produces max torque at 6100rpm. The Jag produces max torque from 2500 to 5500 rpm. A flat band of max torque. which is also 80nm more than the BMW.

    It is also universally agree'd that the XFR is quicker in real life, as you need space to wind up the M5's V10. No low down punch.

  • @Spac8 it's got that low-to-midrange pull BECAUSE of the supercharger but it also causes for it to have poor high-end hp because the supercharger uses the crankshaft as a sourse of power... i can only imagine (and dream) what that 5.0 is truly capable of... they should make a twincharged version of it (look what it did to the volkswagen sirocco' tiny engine and its massive output that resulted by using a turbo AND supercharger (with an electromagnetic clutch to put the s.cha in and out of play

  • it's the V8 R8 with 420 HP. The engine is not from the RS4. RS4 is wet sump, R8 V8 is dry sump, totaly different intake manifold ...

    If two engines happen to have the same displacement and HP, it doesn't mean they are identical.Front engine-mid engine, how could they be the same? :)

    By the way, never judge a car by its straightline performance, that's such an american approach :)

  • All Audi 4.2L engines are the same block and heads. the sump is, as you said, different on the two cars, but the engine are the same. S4 RS4 S5 RS5 A6 4.2L A8 4.2L R8 V8 all the same engine.

  • S4 ? The old S4 was an MPI engine, the others mentioned are FSI. S4 is an older generation. S5, A6, A8, Q7, Touareg are virtually the same, you're right though. RS5 is different (heads, block...). The Audi codes for the engines are: V8 S4: W16; A6, A8, Q7, Touareg, S5: W23; RS5: W32, so they represent 3 generations.

  • opps, I forgot: the RS4 had the W23 HDZ ( Hochdrehzahl) the R8 V8 has the W23 HDZ TS (Hochdrehzahl Trockensumpf) engine.

  • True. To see a family saloon outperform a supercar is crazy. I doubt the XFR will hit 230mph. Evo magazine drove a 1280kg 550bhp Pagani Zonda flat out on the Germany autobahns and failed to exceed 197mph. There's no way a this 2000kg Jag will go faster than about 200-205mph - about the same as an M6.

  • that jaguar has bonneville gearing and i'd be willing to bet it has over 700 hp. (probably more like 800) a stock one without the limiter such as this one (about 510 hp) would probably hit around 190 mph

  • Actually you're right. 600 hp from a remapped ECU, slightly modified intake & exhaust, and revised supercharger settings, and standard gear ratios. All done with stock internals. It was just restricting the stock engine pretty much.

  • You say that, but why have they just put the power in at 518bhp for the V10. The new PDK 997 turbo will destroy it, the lp560 will destroy it. If the V8 is anything to go by most cars will leave it standing. I was so pleased ive opted for another 997. I was contemplating buying an R8.

  • Not exactly, it was voted the best handling car of 2007 I believe. It's not at home in the straights, it really shines in the twisty bits.
