people: I know it's cute. I know they're wonderful creatures. But the fact of the matter is, most people lack the capacity to care for something like this properly. They get big. You can't stuff them in a 4 foot tank. For it not to be cruel, if you have any sort of enclosure, it would have to be BIG. Rule of thumb - the enclosure should be at least a couple times the length and twice the width of the animal, at the LEAST. Males can reach nearly 5 feet-meaning a 10+ foot space. And heaters, food.
someone told me Tegu's are usually quite vicious and aggressive, but i saw a rescued one in a pet shop today and it was sooooo cudddley and sweet really well natured. Im thinking about getting it, it was so badly treated by its last owners as well, they let it's enclosure get so dry that it's toungue dried up and fell out and some of its toes too :/
Wow, i love reptiles but they all seem like backstabbers and bite. for the most part lizards do not like to be hold and touched so much like this. I've read about these Argentine Tegus and so far i hear there the friendliest large lizards. are they all this sociable and friendly when properly raised?
I'd love to have one around..a lot of people have an inherent mistrust for reptiles- they seem very cold, calculating, and completely devoid of all sentiment and may not hesitate to kill you if given the chance...but I've actually seen some of the larger monitors display what can only be called affection, and clearly enjoying being scratched or petted.
These things are so cute :) Are they easier to look after then a Green Iguana? I really want a large reptile, something I can give a good hug without hurting it. I love the look of tegus, they seem so gentle <3
beautiful! how much does it cost to get one? i really wud like to keep one as a pet. how big can they grow and how docile are they? also, what and how often do u feed it?
Awesome to know you are rescuing tegus! I love how he or she put her paw on your hand! Lol! Awesome! I miss my tegu! Lost my job, so had to give him away! Ugh!
I can`t believe this, people buy these animals. I live in Argentina and it is full of them!!. Nobody buys them, we just catch them. They re everywhere i ve got 2 i cought in my farm.
wait what happened to her claws? she dosnt have any claws in the front? I confused i thought you cant cut there claws? I wish i had a tegu there so cute ^_^ but my dad dosnt like reptiles the only reptile i can get is a turtle but its okay i love my turtle ^_^
@PsychoWolfy29 she was a rescue, years of poor shedding conditions led to dry skin being wrapped around her toes eventually cutting off circulation. :( all her toes left are still intact and she sheds just fine now :)
@ReaperWithHips Good question :) Tegus require a slightly humid climate I believe between 50-80 on a humidity gauge? This can be easily achieved by misting the bedding slightly, or by providing a large enough water dish that evaporation can occur thus raising the overall humidity. As for my big girl, even if humidity is in check she can still have shed that may cling on parts like the hands & toes. What I suggest is getting your tegu used to regular warm water soaks if this happens :)
@tenacioustee ...cnt'd. Always keep in mind that Tegus aren't desert species so sand, super high UV/heat etc. is not for them. I would consider that poor conditions for when it comes to shed time. Keep watch on your tegu while they shed, if after a few days you notice some skin still on the hands/toes then try soaking. My big girl will fall right asleep in the bath, make sure it is neither too warm/hot or too deep. (so if they do sleep they will be above water) Take care! -T
sleeps in bed with u? and dosnt get caught in anything? I have a snake, that wuld be a no no. lol. She would be stuck in the bed frame when I woke up if im lucky! lol
@Armoredlamb haha well she has a few times, I kick her out when she tries to now :P considering I've had her a few years now. She has her own little "roaming area" now but before she WOULD climb up on the bed, was cute.
Damn what happened to her hand!? that poor thing! was it in a wire cage before you got her? Shes so sweet.. it just breaks your heart to see animals being mistreated, but this one has a happy ending. Bless your heart for providing her with a safe, loving home.
I dont know if your up for requests but If you are and you have some free time, would you mind doing a vid of Teeju's enclosure. Im hoping to get a female B&W soon and im trying to get as many ideas as I can. Thanks!
It depends how often you handle them. I believe Columbians need much more handling than Argentines to attain the same level of 'tameness'. Otherwise yes, they are much more skittish than Argentines. Argentines, I think, are also somewhat more physically slower in their gape.

At 9 months old he is 20 and 1/2 inches long. He is a very agressive eater; but he has only bit me once cause i was holding him after i ate and he was hungry. hey there, as I said below about the enclosure size: when she was first here I had her in a 8ft x 3ft x 2.5ft custom built enclosure, they need even more room than this I have found. For about half the day each day and sometimes nights I let her free-roam in certain areas of the house, some people don't agree with free-roaming large lizards like this, but I believe it depends on the lizard & your established relationship with it. hope this helps!

hey there, as I said below about the enclosure size: when she was first here I had her in a 8ft x 3ft x 2.5ft custom built enclosure, they need even more room than this I have found. yes she was a rescue, she lost them because her humidity was not proper a lot of her life and this resulted in bad sheds. Layers of dry skin can stick onto the toes and as the tegu grows larger these peices if not tended too can constrict and cut off circulation resulting in toe loss. Her feet are quite stiff from the extra pressure, so I give her foot rubs :)
