  • Played with him over last summer.. Sooooo good

  • Hah, wow I just watched this today and this guitar god is one of my best friend's dad. I see him a lot and talk to him just like any person, it surprises me that this is his alter ego. :p

  • hes my prof for jazz! awesome musician and teacher

  • Great playing from Lorne... Though whoever was responsible for micing the guitar at this show deserves a smack in the mouth. NHOP's bass alone dwarfs his sound. When Oscar starts comping, Lorne's barely audible.

Too bad you can't isolate the guitar channel, so as to better enjoy the genius

  • Brilliant! Nice interplaying...testeful feeling

  • & 4 you folks who are negative, uh the expression on NHOP's face during Lorne's solo is one of satisfaction, you empty flaccid dickheads. Go back to searching for the lost note you useless externalizing hypocrites who couldn't hold a crack pipe in the general vicinity of anything remotely resembling jazz music you useless scum. There, I feel better now. Actually, I still think you suck but I'm sure God loves you. Oh, wait a minute, turns out God does love you but Jesus thinks you are an asshole.

  • is that NHOP on bass?

  • sure is

  • clearly everyone who says Mr. Lofsky has an ego and is not talented has never spoken or played with him, so stop talking shit, you ignorant fucks

  • Lorne doesn't need anybody to defend his playing or personality. What bothers me is when people toss the word talent around without too much consideration. It's just to easy to dismiss a musicians prowess with a thought terminating cliche like "talent." It has nothing to do with some innate predisposition to success, rather, it should be applied retrospectively to reflect the amount of work somebody has done in order to get where they are, and Lorne is definitely a very hard worker.

  • Lorne played at my school and did the best rendition of body and soul I have ever heard this guy is a fucking alien

  • @dart131 He played with my band at Humber College for months and we played Body and Soul. He's got mad chops and he's a great teacher. Lorne is so much fun to play with.

  • I´ve know Lorne for a heck of a long time. Studied jazz together in university. No ego there. Definately one of the most humble, sincere cats on the planet. And if that weren´t enough, a great jazz musician.

  • Wow..jazz guitar on a stratocaster..very cool.

  • Pretty sure that's an ibanez. Correct me if i'm wrong.

  • I think we need to define "jazz" here People. I'm pretty sure the two records Lorne did with Ed Bickert would qualify as "Jazz" In my opinion they would also qualify as two of the greatest "jazz" guitar albums of all time. I don't think it's fair to say that Lorne is not a great"Jazz" guitarist.

The man's sound, lines, and harmonic concept are Immediately recognizable. Not too many of us can make that claim. I have known Lorne for years, and can testify to the fact that he is a very humble cat!

  • "agree with the fact that Lorne has a HUGE ego, and I agree with the fact that he is not a very good jazz guitar player."

Uhhh, when I saw him and Adrean Farrugia on piano it was one of the most unreal performances ever. I talked to him shortly after and he was the most humble guy ever.

Maybe it was the way you approached him that made you feel he had an ego.

  • It seems from the comments that some people like more melodic play than this video shows. In this piece Lorne sure does know what he's doing, but maybe it's not to some people's taste. Check him out on the album One Take.

  • Lorne's the greatest guitar player ever.

  • quite frankly, he is the worst jazz guitar player ever. He doesn't know what the hell he is playing. Try enlightening yourself and listening to some Joe Pass or Ulf Wakenius. Yeah he played with Oscar peterson who is a legend, but he didn't last very long. Not even a full year!

  • Maybe you should enlighten yourself on the subject. Lorne knows everything he is playing. You probably have no clue whats going on because its going over your head. I've been studying with Lorne for a few years now, and watched him play live several times. Trust me, he is a true genius...Oscar wouldn't have produced Lorne's first album if he wasn't. I agree with you about Ulf being great, but Joe Pass!?!?! BORING.

  • He did produce his first album.. but he also fired him from his group. I'm not necessarily saying he doesn't have talent, but he is not a jazz giutarist. Joe Pass is a legend. He has true talent. When I met Lorne he had nothing nice to say except brag. He has the worst ego I've ever seen. Did you know he held that spot in the OP group for the shortest time. That spot was the most prestigious spot around for a long time. It's great that you are studying with him! But he is definitely not the best

  • Who cares how long he played with Oscar for. Lorne is doing something different from everyone else. Listen to his "inside out" record with Kieran, and Barry. Brilliant, and no one can deny that. Joe Pass was cool at one time, but now it just all sounds the same.

  • If Lorne is doing different things thats great. I just don't think he sounded good with OP. I think that the talent that has been on that stage (NHØP, Ulf, Joe, Alvin Queen, Jeff Hamilton, Ella Fitzgerald .. and so on) with him, doesn't compare to what Lorne sounds like. Just my opinion. I will pick up his record and take a listen.

  • sure thing

  • I've met Lorne Lofsky several times. He is one of the most humble people I've ever met. He has no ego. Where do you get off telling lies like that.

  • I will also consider getting my ears flushed per as your advice. However, Lorne will still sound the same to me. Thanks though.

  • Some people sound like they're getting paid by the note. I think they know who are.

  • That's right. Ulf Wakenius doesn't have an original bone in his body. He strings together one mindless blues lick after another. If that's jazz guitar genius, jazzmania ought to get his ears flushed.

  • thanks very much.

i like hearing all the opinons. its literally just mine. he had a HUGE ego when I met him. I just don't think Jazz is his genre. I believe in someone doing what they like. That is fine! No problem whatsoever. I still believe that Ulf is a far better talent that Lorne. . It's honestly not a matter of how well known someone is. It's a matter of talent. I'm just voicing my opinion. Not meant to be a heated thing. I prefer one, you prefer the other.

  • I think it takes a big ego to start making comments like that about one of the better guitarists of the last 30 years. seriously, I like Ulf's playing, but nothing in his stands out and he doesn't have an original sound or style. There's are guys like him in nearly every town. To say he is a "far better" talent is pure nonsense. Meolidcally I think they are comparable, harmonically Lorne is lightyears ahead of Ulf(that part I don't think is debatable). thats where lorne is unique and stands out

  • His harmonic skills are not showcased in this band since he's got Oscar on keys. so I suppose its fair to say Lorne wasn't the best fit for OP's band, since his harmonic side is really his bread and butter.

  • Actually, he played with O.P. for three years. 1994-1996 It might be an idea to get the facts straight.

  • actually its more like a year and a half to two years. it was only summer seasons.

  • and i agree with the fact that the OP group was not right for Lorne. I agree with the fact that Lorne has a HUGE ego, and I agree with the fact that he is not a very good jazz guitar player. For those people who say Joe Pass is boring, you should do your research. He is a legend. Without him, who knows where we would be today.

  • wtf? lorne lofsky is one of the best jazz guitarists ive ever heard...

  • @ceeceex0x

Why do you agree with the statement that Lorne has a HUGE ego? I've known the guy for about 25 years now, and if anything, he is too self effacing for his own good.

Oh yes, and he is a crap jazz guitarist... Oscar Peterson always hired bums.

  • I've taken lessons with Lorne for 4 years now. I seriously can't believe you would write something like this. He "knows what he's playing" more than anyone I've ever heard or met in my life. Don't post comments like you know who he is or what he plays if you're just some punk who thinks your cool because you can understand what Joe Pass plays.

Also, this isn't a contest over who's the best jazz guitar player. They're all great.

Lorne is amazing and will always be amazing.

  • The worst ever?? Huh?? Fuck, clearly you have your head in your ass. I had Lorne as my guitar teacher in music college and I was in awe of his ability and knowledge. So...really...do you know what you are talking about. Clearly not. And he was very humble.

  • @jazzmania2819 Anyone with the username 'jazzmania' + Michael Buble videos favourited + pathetic unnecessary criticisms = obvious wannabe with an inferiority complex. Who the fuck do you think you are?

  • 1994

  • Awesome. RIP Oscar Peterson. What year is this?
