Further away from the microphone = hear more reverb from the room. They were either trying to get a spacious layering of different reverb amounts, or were recording alternate tracks to choose from during mixdown.

It was all about layering, a trick that Jackson's engineer Bruce Swedien used a LOT on Michael's vocals; record a pass at the mic, then back the singer up, boost the gain, and do another pass.

Plus, Michael was so good he could sing it the same way every time, so the layering was extra precise.
