This is where the actual intermission for the film was (the music here is also the same as in the film), so I assume that HBO decided, instead of showing just a black screen, they'd have at least some message that this was intended to be the intermission.
@SailorCallie: TCM does show intermissions, but only if they're part of the movie itself.
Another thing., when Showtime aired "Gandhi" in 1986, they used the same background music as here, but it (obviously) had a different background for Showtme's logo, and timer(which were kind of dull-looking), and that announcer said, "Showtime's presentation of 'Gandhi' will continue after this brief intermission".
Well, the possible reason could be so that the viewers who were at home who happened to be watching "Gandhi" can at least get themselves re-organized by going to the bathroom, getting refreshments, etc., simple things like that. But hey, at least HBO had the spunk to do something like that!
'MSTS', when did you record this? My guess is that it probabally had to be sometime between 1983 and 1986, because I know that "Gandhi" came out in theaters in 1982(released by Columbia Pictures Industries).
Hey, it's intermission. Let's all go to the lobby and get ourselves a treat....

We don't see Intermission breaks like that anymore, even on TCM.

Why would they have an intermission?

Don't know, tape is not dated. Probably later 80's rather than early..
