@zzzgdap These Olympics were definitely not for an average consumer brain...It is difficult to understand all the symbols, even 1/10 of them...Do not worry. England with no culture whatsoever will have better- not so boring Olympics with probably the Anglo-saxons eating raw meat like they used to do for hundreds of years...

I was in the Stadium that night, having run with the Flame 5 days earlier. I will never forget it as long as I live. A magnificent, simple, poetic, overwhelmingly beautiful Opening Ceremony. The final lap of Torchbearers to the music of the Pirogov finale, with the Cauldron bowing down, was genius. Admittedly, the lighting at Barcelona 1992 remains the best yet and unequalled. I was also in Beijing 2008, yes it was spectacular but way too big and grandiose, a huge show for the sake of the show.
@m300957t The first is Nikos Galis, the best Greek basketball player ever, then Mimis Domazos, one of the best football players, then Voula Patoulidou (gold medal winner at 100m hurdles in the 1992 olympics), then Kakhi Kahiasvili (2 gold olympic medals in 1996 and 2000 in weight-lifting), then Ioannis Melissanidis (gold medal winner in the 1996 olympics in gymnastic-floor exercise) and finally it was Nikos Kaklamanakis, a windsurfer who won the gold medal in the 1996 who lit the torch.

I remember this well, I was so amazed with the cauldron, I loved the way it bowed to the torchbearer, also bowing to the Olympic Flame as it's so revered. Also it was done in a very futuristic way, I love futuristic styles like this. One of my favourites of all time.
@Harry13ification this is an unfair comment! I don't know where you are from. Greece has a civilisation history of 10,000 years. It has given to the World most of the values we have. We need to remember and respect this. Greece is a small country which has proven to be strong and move on despite the difficulties. It is unfair to judge a country like this for its hard moments of a few years. I can tell you of many countries who had bad moments in their histories
This song is called "eisai ena peristeri" (you are a dove) Lyrics Nikos Gatsos , music Manos Hadjidakis performed by Eleftheria Arvanitaki (I think). The reason why they used this song is obvious.
magnificient music... but i was very disapointed with the cauldron (big cigarette lol?) they should've used something related to ancient greece, that was fail.
Although I'm a Proud Aussie through and through I have to say this is one of the best Lighting of the Cauldron ever!!! What intense passion, it still gives me Goose Bumps when I watch this Video! Well Done Athens, you have staged one of the best games ever!!!
The torch seems to echo the legend of Prometheus, the one who granted men fire secrectly from Zeus. Now men are giving the flame back to the higher powers, by honoring them with the Olympic Games.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The Olympic flame is a nazi torch parade. It was started by Goebbels in 1936, it wes not part of the ceremonies before that, it has nothing to do with ancient Greece and it has nothing to do with Baron de Coubertin's concept of the modern Olympics. The idiots in Greece, USA and elsewhere don't know this because they don't know history. The commies who try to stop the flame runners because of the Coca Cola advertisements are likewise idiots because they think it is an ancient Greek symbol.
@ljmabr Olympic games return to the place they are created...the olympic flame is about to light up after 100 years to the place where OLYMPIC GAMES STARTED 2500+ years ago...WHAT COULD BE MORE INTENSE GLORIOUS AND SYMBOLIC FROM THIS?...runners were the first athletes of the olympics (not archers)...and he pass between the ATHLETES...thats the true....firing with a bow is indeed very impressive but nothing can compare to this..
"rwmiosyn" I am sorry, but you have the wrong information. It was made in Macedonia for sure. Anyway, Greece couldn't afford to make the cauldron in Italy !
@tokyoronin Zeus belongs to the ancient years..Greeks are christians so we couldn't have used Zeus..it's a different creature..i mean he was the "cheif" of the 12 Gods of Olympus..
no, athens should've hosted 1996, the 100th anniversary of the games, instead they gave the hosting duties to one of the biggest toilets in the world, atlanta
the flying dancer of Vancouver ceremony was stolen by the flying dancer of the Greek opening in Athens! Please people! stop steal EVERYTHING from the Greeks!!!!!!
you just cant say that. The olympics is an integration of cultures and nations. Every body know that the olympics started in greece but never the less is not about who did the best ceremony.
@athens1111 Olympia was partly destroyed by Theodosius I, and later destroyed by earthquakes and extreme weather. Kinda hard to hold the Modern Games on an ancient site that's almost completely destroyed. It would be nice though.
dude did you watch any of the rest of this opening ceremony? Like the torch relay, parade of culture, or the DNA stuff? or are you basing that off of less than 30 seconds it took to light the torch?
hello???the meaning of this was technology kneeling to man kind that's why the ''mechanical structure'' moves towards the guy that lights the flame...what you're saying matches more the bejing opening than the athens one!!

Although I'm a Proud Aussie through and through I have to say this is one of the best Lighting of the Cauldron ever!!! What intense passion, it still gives me Goose Bumps when I watch this Video! Well Done Athens, you have staged one of the best games ever!!!
strike1977 1 year ago 3
@strike1977 Australia was the best because he light the torch with a bow and arrow
sweetheart2109 1 year ago
@sweetheart2109 That was in Barcelona'92. In Australia the Olympic Cauldron was a "fountain".
pedrojo2293 1 year ago
@pedrojo2293 oh yea that right

The torch seems to echo the legend of Prometheus, the one who granted men fire secrectly from Zeus. Now men are giving the flame back to the higher powers, by honoring them with the Olympic Games.

The commies who try to stop the flame runners because of the Coca Cola advertisements are likewise idiots because they think it is an ancient Greek symbol.
kajamix 1 year ago
@kajamix No, the olympic flame has its origins to antiquity.... the torches moving around all over the world has a nazi background
vabilas28 1 year ago
@vabilas28 Justinian the Great, the noblest of Greek emperors, prohibited the Olympic games.
kajamix 1 year ago
@kajamix No it was a Roman emperor, Theodosius, that did that in 393 A.D.

@Scott89119 It´s not. Barcelona 92 is much more intense and memorable.

They should have had a gigantic statue of Zues rise up from the ground holding up the Olympic cauldron over his head and light it from there.

An interesting fact that not many of you know: Macedonians worked on the creation of the cauldron. It was made in the Republic of Macedonia.

This is the greatest opening ceremony of recent years.
I think that Greece should of gotten to do it in 2000 though, to mark the new millenium.
Greece was where it started, so they should of gotten to start the new millenium as well.
I'm very proud to be part Greek myself.

no, athens should've hosted 1996, the 100th anniversary of the games, instead they gave the hosting duties to one of the biggest toilets in the world, atlanta
Giua1973 1 year ago 2
I never even thought of that lol.
They should of hosted 1996 AND 2000 lol. They deserve to.

where do they carry the flame from if its in athens?

the idea of olympic torch relay is to unite the world around the olympic principles.
FarkasPM 2 years ago
@FarkasPM no i mean dont they start in athens?
bombercat123 2 years ago
@bombercat123 No, they start in Olympia, the site of the ancient Olypmic games.
AuraHero 1 year ago
the ancient olympic games were not held in athens :) they where in Ancient Olympia
athens1111 1 year ago
@athens1111 Olympia was partly destroyed by Theodosius I, and later destroyed by earthquakes and extreme weather. Kinda hard to hold the Modern Games on an ancient site that's almost completely destroyed. It would be nice though.
strongARM27 1 year ago
hm i dont think you understood my point.
What I want to say is that the point of carrying the flame TO athens, is because the place that they where born was not athens, but Ancient Olympia.
I know it wouldn't be possible to be held there. I've visited it and it is great :)))

Olympics is to celebrate the achievement of mankind. What an irony to place the most significant moment of the ceremony on a mechanical structure.
heineken08 2 years ago
dude did you watch any of the rest of this opening ceremony? Like the torch relay, parade of culture, or the DNA stuff? or are you basing that off of less than 30 seconds it took to light the torch?
EleftheriaEllada 2 years ago 4
@heineken08 A mechanical structure that was conceived, designed, and constructed by mankind.
nano4288 2 years ago 4
hello???the meaning of this was technology kneeling to man kind that's why the ''mechanical structure'' moves towards the guy that lights the flame...what you're saying matches more the bejing opening than the athens one!!
