A complete disaster. I remember reading about this concert in an old rolling stone magazine some time ago and that there were other bike gangs there too, some from other parts of the country. Also, there was some bad acid going around giving people some bad trips. If any one out there was at the concert I would like to what other bands played besides jefferson airplane and the stones.
@16penney I wasn't there, but the bands that played were: The Flying Burrito Brothers; Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young; and Santana. The Dead were supposed to play, but they backed out when they heard about all the violence.
What a brilliant idea....hire a bunch of primitive thugs as "security."
Then again, I'm not defending that black asshole who showed up in a bright green suit packin' a gun. I guess somebody needed to take care of the problem.
The Stones weren't just some unknown club band by 1969-it boggles the mind that the stage was built too low, there are no barriers between the performers and that audience-and above all it defies reason that they would hire thugs like the Hells Angels as 'security'. Wtf?
The Grateful Dead told Mick that they were the best bet. They were going to show up anyway! Just a bad night, man. Don't carry a gun to a concert! Apparently it wasn't even loaded. He was only 18. The Stones were naive about how violent America really is. They learned thier lesson. They barely got out of there themselves! 4 people died that day/night.
@me5g435rg it hadnt even happened yet at this point. it was the next song, under my thumb where meredith hunter was stabbed. however, it looks like that last guy might have been stabbed as well. the scary part is, meredith (if he WAS gunning from mick) gets to within 2 ros from the stage at the early part of under my thumb, you can see him right in front of the stage.
Mick Jagger hired the Hells Angels to guard his ass because of a shitty stage set up. The crowd got mad when he came on stage 2 hours late. The Angels were just protecting their bikes. The guy got killed because he had a gun. He was going to kill Mick Jagger. Look up Sony Barger on line and read his books about the concert. Mick is damn lucky the Angels were there or he would have gotten shot.
I have strong suspicions that the CIA was somehow behind the violence at Altamont. It would be so easy to infiltrate or even sponsor groups like the Hell's Angels.
Some of the Angels in this clip look to me more like CIA/military intelligence types- agent provocateurs- with an agenda to tarnish the image of young people and in general the peace movement.
The Manson murders earlier that year had the same effect of demonizing young people, who made up the crux of the antiwar movement.
see my comments about MKULTRA and LSD testing. I think Woodstock was the Control Group, given a regimented guided experience, and Altamont was the Randomized sample, let to do its own to compare the results for nefarious purposes
@BobReidy I always found it funny at 7:15 when the girl smoking the cigarette turns around and is face to face with Jagger who is standing at the edge of the stage looking at the chaos in the crowd. She looks like a kid fooling around in a classroom, and who does not realize the teacher is standing right there
There was never any proof Meredith Hunter was 'gunning' for Mick. On film it looks like he fought with the Hells Angels and he pulled out his piece. His girlfriend later said he was defending himself because the Angels kept harassing him-and his white girlfriend. But guess we'll never know for sure.
The bottom line, Woodstock had been such a great success that they thought they could do something similar on the West Coast. Unfortunately they used security that was just as high as everyone else, fights are bound to happen. It ended badly, and they no one ever tried to do anything like this again. Such a shame.
to my knowledge, woodstock was 100% self policed. my personal thoughts on the matter, if you watch the film, the organizers on site (managers, promoters) meet onstage and say that they are just going to let what ever happens, happen. Like an expirament. MKULTRA was testing LSD pretty heavily at this point, and perhaps Woodstock was the Control Group, and Altamont was the Random Sample
