It would also be wrong to group in all of East Asia and Southeast Asia together, since they speak over 4 different major language families and have not been in common historical relations.
The fact is, "Asian" is not a racial term. It's a regional term. And South, East, Central, and South Asians are still "Asians" whether you like it or not.

@kartikasweet You must have not read history. India has history dating back to 20,000 B.C. The British men with local women only produced Anglo-Indian people, which is hardly anyone in India. A few British soldiers don't change over a billion people, it's common sense. The South Asian gene hasn't really changed in the last 40,000 years. If there were any migrations, it would be from countries closer to the Indian subcontinent. Most Indians are Caucasian, but are not white.

Well yeah I don't think anybody is stupid enough to consider them the same race as Chinese,Korean etc..obviously no one does that. This is quite obvious. Asia is just a big continent, even Israel is in Asia, so is Saudia Arabia, Yemen, parts of Russia etc..all different races. No one is saying Indians are the same race as East Asians. However I agree its wrong to classify them as "Asian" along with Chinese people in U.S census records.

What he's really trying to say is that South Asia/India or Indians/Eurasians shouldn't be racially classified as Asians. In popular American culture most conceptualize "Asians" as having Mongolic ancestry such as people from East and South East Asia. Having Mongolic features fulfills this notion of what Asians are suppose to look like. Unless there's a universal consensus to change the racial classification of Indians they will continue to be part of Asia and considered Asians.
