Hey Maddow, the last time I read the US Constitution, Michigan, and all other states were supposed to be sovereign states. If you don't like the way it's run, don't move here you stupid cunt. Michigan, and its cities, have been financially screwed for years under Canadian born socialist ex-Governess Jennifer Granholm. Snyder is fixing the state, and it's going to hurt for a while, but its getting done. We constantly hear about "shared sacrifice." The left doesn't like this part of "sacrifice."
someone told me this was "unionbusting"--well, looks to me the only union people gonna get hurt work for the cities and counties that are belly up--which will make government smaller and expenses cheaper.
whats new, isn't that what leaders have done over and over again in the us, ignore the constitution then under some emergency power or other take civil liberties and basic rights away from the peope. Funny thing is, lots of Michigan citizens will think it a good idea..
Can someone please recap what they were talking about, my brain is not running on all 8 right now haha.. im usally good at understanding but this is just.. i dunno
If only Madcow would inform the public that USA spends more on Education and Health care and gives worser than worse than the poorist 3rd world countries. Time for other governers to do the same--chop chop unions. Ever took the bother to account what a teach makes and all those holidies and PERKS. You stiffs working for $8-12 hours aday.More like stupid to do so. Wake-up fools--check out the homes and areas tech live or any cival servents--Home of the saps Land of free loaders :^/
As a Michigan resident for over a decade, I wonder how many of the idiots here have any idea what kind of shithole was created by 8 years of Jennifer Granholm. Where was Rachel Maddow when Michigan led the nation in unemployment under democratic leadership?
The fact is the for someone earning $250k now would have been earning $25k then and would have been paying less tax. The 90% rate being touted would have applied to earnings of $2.5mm in 1950 or $25mm now. Do the left want to return to ALL of the Eisenhower tax code (rstore all the tax shelters as well) and not just the bits that suit their purposes?
When they remove the democracy that is in their way, they will replace it with Haliburton or another amoral, nihilistic corporation. This will soon spread to your state. The land that your family grew up on and the country that your ancestors died to create now belongs to the fascists.
They are using the plight of the Detroit schools to claim an economic emergency, but if that is the reason then why didn't they write into the law that if they take over the Detroit school system and or fix it, then this law goes away?
The entire lower peninsula of Michigan is a shale/natural gas deposit. The reason they are doing this is so if the people organize against Haliburton and the other massively polluting drilling companies like they did in New York, they can remove the democratically elected bodies that stand in their way and go ahead and drill and pollute anyway, destroying Michigan's finest resource, it's water.
But guess what?!? The Board of the LAUSD just appointed a new superintendent, they decided to pay him $300,000.00 a year, give him an outrageous amount of assistants who are getting paid more than what they should be earning, oh! the cherry on top, is a car paid by tax payer money!! Excuse me for being unpatriotic, or an einstein.. I just refuse to be blinded like the rest of you..
Im not sure what upsets me more, the fact that all the replies aimed at me are in support for publicly funded unions, or that no one sees how dumb it woe be to preserve publicly funded unions! The board of the LAUSD just cut every elective program in every school, handed pink slips to the teachers who taught these programs. All because the largest district in the US doesn't have money.
All you have to do is look at how broken our education system is, to realize unions funded by tax payer dollars DON'T WORK! Or that, for example, the LADWP, with its terrible ideas of watering days, and imposing fines for the water im already paying for!! HELLO!!
Im sorry for being "unpatriotic" or an "einstien" but quite frankly any union being paid by tax payer money should not have power over the citizens that pay for it AT ALL!! PERIOD...
Just an example. In the Northeast, there is not a single facility built by a foreign automaker company. They all produce in conservative states, mostly in right to work states. With the new Boeing, Embraer and RR facilities, the South also becomes the backbone of US aerospace manufacturing (including headquarters of Gulfstream, Spirir, Bell, Beechcraft, Hawker, Cessna, LearJet...). Meanwhile, left-wingers blame the wealthy and tax cuts for everything.
@xaviqaz, JUST FOR EXAMPLE, the same states you site as the "backbone of US aerospace manufacturing" are also "welfare states," i.e., they receive more federal tax $ than they pay in, while many of those northeastern, upper midwest and west coast "blue" states paid the difference (see E. Klein @ WashPo: wapo(.)st/jz05EO - remove parentheses). Wikipedia: "The southern states had...the lowest median household income." Pretty much the same story for education, healthcare, etc. In other words, BFD.
@incitebytes Eastern Germany lives on welfare. Southern regions in Italy and Spain live on welfare too. But they are not more attractive to foreign investors (or domestic, for that matter). The fact that northern states usually are net payers has a lot to do with US big corporations having their headquarters there. But, are they building many new facilities in northern states? Google it
@xaviqaz, I have no doubt that low wages (and nice weather) play a part in it, but you missed my point. Where's the "trickle-down"? You look at the Southern States (including TX) and virtually across-the board you see low median incomes, poor education levels, poor health-insurance coverage, etc. ad nauseam - in other words, a Republican paradise.
@incitebytes Texas and other southern states are exposed to broken federal immigration policies. Their population grows at a much faster pace. And if any of them tries to adress the issue (Arizona, now Georgia) they are bullied and blackmailed even with boycott threats. Southern states are also victim of failed liberal policies regarding black people. Anyway, that was not my point. The south was extremely poor not so many decades ago. The south is attracting so much investment now. That´s it.
@xaviqaz, Yeah, liberals are to blame for everything. 300+ yrs of slavery, 100 yrs of Jim Crow, racial housing discrim./steering, redlining, southern bigotry (google "republican southern strategy"), and failure to pass comprehensive immigration reform were all "liberal" failures. Lol. Btw, heavily tax/labor-subsidized trickle-down "investment" has been going on in the South for decades (mirroring Repub. trickle-down federal policies), while the middle-class has collapsed. Damn those liberals.
@incitebytes When it comes to high value-added manufacturing and quality jobs, the word "subsidized" is out of place. I´d rather use it to describe certain privileged people in the public sector.
@jrwel14 In Germany it was a socialist government who cut the maximum income tax rate from 48.5 to 42% and federal corporate rate from 25 to 15%. Yes, they cut taxes for the wealthiest and big businesses. They did in 2003-2004, when the country virtually grew zero. In Switzerland the rich pay no more than 11.5% to the central government, and they are not starving.
@xaviqaz Still 42% is higher than the 35% we have now. Ryan wants to go back to pre depression rates of 25%. Trump said to tax the rich Buffet said to tax him higher. Look up Buffet says there is something wrong with a system where he pays less taxes than secretary. Also look up Trump wants to tax the rich. Gates and his dad tried to pass a law where the rich would be taxed in Washington state. There is a millionaires website where they want to be taxed more. It's everywhere.
@jrwel14 They are all free to donate money to the government. Anyway, who is the "rich"? The ultra mega wealthy guys like Buffet, who have a certain feeling of guilt for their success, or the hardworking guy that earns 500 thousand or 1 million dollars a year? 42% is not so far from 35%. Seems that some liberals would prefer a 80 or 90% rate.
@xaviqaz No, BUT, this country did better when the rates were at 91% in the 1950s. Then the 25% in the last half of the 1920s. Last time the Republicans had a balanced budget was in 1956 with 91% rates. and the federal highway act . The 24-25% of 1925-1930 led to the depression. Ryan wants to go back to pre-depression rates.
@xaviqaz That history shows that we did better with higher rates than lower ones? conservatives would do anything to continue the big tax lie. Guess it's better to go believing a lie. Than, to say, Hey, people! We've been wrong all these years. " Or, "We just care about our rich buddies." The more I have checked on this. The more I have discovered that trickle down, low rates helps jobs, the economy has been 1 big joke.
@jrwel14 The Revenue Act of 1932 enacted dozens of taxes, including those mentioned and taxes on such consumer products as admissions to any place by ticket or subscription; auto bodies, tires and inner tubes; cameras, candy, chewing gum, furs, soft drinks, and sporting goods; firearms, shells, and cartridges; coal, coke, and copper ore; telegraph, telephone, cable, and radio dispatches; and checks, jewelry, matches, refrigerators, stamps, and toiletries.
@Ultramediacorp Will add. Don't you just love the comment by several fleabaggers who speak about our founding fathers didn't have to pay a GASOLINE TAX? Great response, isn't it?
@jrwel14 Dude your head in your ass. Look at states that have had Balanced Budgets Cities with Mayors that have had balanced Budgets and you'll see DEMOCRATS RUINING THEM IN DEBT. and what led to the depression was FDR
@jrwel14 It's also got more Job Growth than anywhere else but whats your point shit head? Ya have no clue what you are talking about and that's obvious
@jrwel14 No, as in you been EATING LEAD PAINT MORON. How does one get "breathing paint from paint chips jack ass. Hell you can't "Breath Paint" either unless you want to drown. Now Paint FUMES, you can breath those and that WOULD mess up your brain. Is that what happened to you? Or are you a Professional dumb ass as a career. Seems like you can't debate me on the issues anymore so Ill let you on with your job at the Food Court's Meat on a Stick. fast food place.
@jrwel14 The tax cuts for the rich is one of the biggest lies of all. It demonized the rich who by the way, paid two thirds of the entire treasuries COLLECTED taxes. Reagans Tax cuts for the rich created more entrepreneurial investment getting more people jobs than at any time in history. He Raised the deficit however and that wasn't a good thing but when you compare it to Obama, hehe well then THAT makes Reagan look like a hero.
Google "Leo Wanta and Reagans Gamble" Bush/Clinton stole it
@Ultramediacorp What a crock of shi$! The rich pay most of the total taxes BECAUSE MOST of the income comes from the rich. While they are paying less due to tax cuts and such than decades ago. reagan tripled the debt. Bush doubled the debt.. Look up Presidential Debt.
@jrwel14 Maybe if you didn't get your facts from the annenberg owned "Factcheck" site you would understand the economy. You have what is a comic book understanding of history.
@jrwel14 If in this “recovery” our economy had grown and generated jobs at the average rate achieved following the 10 previous postwar recessions, GDP per person would be $4,528 higher and 13.7 million more Americans would be working today. …President Ronald Reagan’s policies ignited a recovery so powerful that if it were being repeated today, real per capita GDP would be $5,694 higher than it is now—an extra $22,776 for a family of four. Some 16.9 million more Americans would have jobs.
@Ultramediacorp Recall Reagan came in inheriting a Carter Recession. Unlike Obama, he didn't blame anything on his predecessor. The difference between Obama inherited recession and Reagan's is Obama does everything that Caused the recession and Reagan did NOT
This is why I always tell people not to pay attention to party labels. Bigger government doesn’t work, regardless of whether a politician is a Republican or Democrat. The problem isn’t Obamanomics, it’s Bushobamanomics. But since that’s a bit awkward, let’s just call it statism.
@jrwel14 On economic issues, the only real difference is that Bush cut taxes and Obama is in favor of higher taxes. Though even that difference is somewhat overblown since Obama’s tax policies – up to this point – haven’t had a big impact on the overall tax burden (though that could change if his plans for higher tax rates ever go into effect).
Repubicans call Democrates "communists' and all sorts of other things that are realted to dictatorship.
What the HELL do you call this? Disolve local government to install your own "Manager" who has complete control. I can't believe the people of Michigan will let them get away with this. Where are the Wolverines?
@jimitl5 I call it a desperate measure to offset the Governments Union scale over paid incomes their over paid pensions and that stupid ass collective barganing bullshit. What the hell are they supposed to do when UNIONS are destroying the private sector
@Ultramediacorp Will add, as Reagan said, "When collective bargaining is forbidden, freedom is lost." removing that and Unions is what the Nazis did. What Conservatives want to do now!
@jrwel14 Unions representing the public employee is a lot different than those in the private sector shit for brains. Unless you like paying a city Bus Driver a salary and benefits package of $90,000 per year. That is't a bargain, it's robbery by Union Thugs in Bed with Politicians and is why Reagan had no problem firing the PATCO workers.
I feel so sorry for the U.S people. Your government sends troops to other countries to fight oppression. Yet your all suffering oppression at home. The only difference is that you believe your free. Worse of all the majority of society are being dumbed down, so that they don't realize whats going on. Thank god i don't live in that very very sad excuse of a democratic country.
@santoniotraps It's true. We're all being lied to. Look at the Occupy Wall Street protests. That's huge and yet the media isn't giving it any coverage. The average person doesn't know anything about it and when they do hear about it, they're being told lies.
this is crazy.......not only should we fight this politically but we should also boycott the corps involved, hit there pockets this is how they get the msg but were all running around like a chicken without a head...
any thoughts on this msg me im curious what ppl think.
I admire Rachel Maddow when it comes to some topics, but I can sincerely say I completely disagree on the topic regarding unions. I am happy about what is occuring in Wisconsin, and I hope it can happen here in California, and every other state. Quite frankly unions don't represent what they once did, I am also certain that Cesar Chavez would be turning in his grave if he saw how todays union leaders used their influence.
@richrnndz2, Nice to see you've embraced the BIG LIE, brought to your courtesy of the right-wing message machine (Big Money, Big Corps., Fox, et al.). At a time when the middle class is collapsing, CEOs are being compensated at multiples of workers' pay never seen before, and nearly all the income gains in the past 15 years have gone to the top 1%, you, (brilliantly) have concluded that the unions (who represent roughly 14% of the workforce) are the cause of our problems. Way to go, Einstein!
@incitebytes quick, use some more buzzwords in your comment. i happen to agree with you, but i find it hard to take someone seriously when it seems like all (s)he is capable of is reciting rhetoric.
@FlameBurger, I think you've confused "buzzwords/rhetoric" with what the rest of us call "facts," but by all means, if you can express it better, be my guest (much better than just being a sideline critic).
@incitebytes The use of the phrases "big lie" (in all caps, nonetheless) and "right-wing message machine," (complete with more use of the word "big" afterwards,) is unnecessary and arguably detrimental to your argument. They are buzzwords and rhetoric that I see used all too often in political debates to sensationalize something. As for expressing it better, you could have simply said something to the effect of "Unions aren't as prominent as you believe, representing only 14% of the workforce."
@FlameBurger, Wow, an English/prose critic no less. What happened? Lose your teaching assistant's job? Need I remind you that we're text-limited here and sometimes the point is to grab someone's attention/ire rather than drone on in perfect prose. I realize we can't all be as eloquent as some, for example, your comment on "Weegrolol's" channel: "the opening part is fucking fantastic. most metal ringtone of all time. OF ALL TIME!" Now, there's some top-notch stuff (in caps, no less).
@powerface71 Now, I don't agree with richrnndz2, but I appreciate that they were able to articulate an intelligent position and conveyed that without being a complete asshole. Yeah, they're wrong, but give them some credit for not being a dick..
@richrnndz2 yeah some unions are getting abit 2 greedy which sucks because that give a more of a reason to get rid of them :/ unions are meant for better working style and acceptable pays and breaks not greed and privileges :/
@richrnndz2 You are being scammed by big business and the Republican party and you can't see it. They won't stop with union rights, they will go fater all worker rights until there is nothing left except to kow tow to big business and plead for the crumbs they will let you have. Even then they will continue to ship jobs overseas for the bottom line profit. People who believe these tax cuts are about helping create jobs are idiots. Its about increasing the profit margine. SCAM!!!!!
As Sarah Palin says, "You betcha. Now holy crap dere!!"And to TJ347, you sound like one of these teabagger dreamers who think they will one day be billionaires like the Koch Bros. Got news for ya chum, only schmucks with great big inheritances get that kind of dough. See ya in the trailer park dere!!
Rachel's a pompous windbag. Public employees shouldn't have unions, as they work for the PUBLIC! We can't afford to have elected officials negotiating these contracts, as the elected officials all too often aren't beholden to members of the public, but to the dollars they get from lobbies such as... public employee unions! Rachel is the ultimate liberal poster girl in every possible way, from being blind to reality to being all about individual rights over the good of the greater society.
@soulhoosier, C'mon, you know you can't trust people who can spell, or read, or who are articulate and use proper elocution, or who actually know things -- they're the untrustworthy "elites," don't cha know?
I love how the republicans have only been in for a few months and the democrats and liberals are already on them. Meanwhile they're saying that their democrats and Obama haven't had enough time. total hypocrites.
@Detlockerroom, Right on! Oh, wait, I remember Republicans/conservatives blaming Obama BEFORE he took office. E.g., Rush Limbaugh on November 6, 2008 (2 DAYS AFTER OBAMA WAS ELECTED): "The Obama recession is in full swing, ladies and gentlemen. Stocks are dying, which is a precursor of things to come. This is an Obama recession. Might turn into a depression. He hasn't done anything yet but his ideas are killing the economy. His ideas are killing Wall Street." Sorry to pop your fact-free bubble.
@incitebytes please post a link to this, i would like to see it. I wouldn't be surprised if he said this. both sides are at fault. both parties aren't making good decisions. if you can't post a link with this then your statement can't really be considered "full of facts" either. And my statement is true. just look at some of the comments on your video. referring to comments that people have said this stuff is factual. As they have actually said it and you can see it for yourself.
@Detlockerroom, Please post a link to what? What are you talking about? And who made you the final arbiter of what's true and what isn't? Oh, I get it, just because you SAY something is true (or isn't) that somehow makes it so? If you want to have a real debate on a particular policy point, then state your belief/point/thesis and back it up with credible sourcing. Claiming everyone does it or is at fault is totally worthless commentary. Please stop wasting our time w/ steaming piles of nothing.
@incitebytes first of al,l i asked you to post a link to the statement that you claim rush limbaugh said. Once again, I never said that i was the final say on what truth is, stop accusing me of stuff i didn't say (once again, "Straw Man"). You're doing the same thing, prove that my statements are steaming piles of nothing. My point is, people who think that the mess this country is in is due to only one party (rep. or dem.) is wrong and that these are the people who shouldn't be taken seriously.
@Detlockerroom, Your problem is you don't express yourself very well. You didn't ask me "to post a link to the statement that [I] claim rush limbaugh said." What you (sloppily) said during an exchange of comments was "please post a link to this." Next time, get the marbles out of your mouth. Of course, you could have just googled the first phrase, "The Obama recession is in full swing," but I guess that would have been too tough. See: bit-ly/fnly0N (replace the "-" with ".", case sensitive).
@incitebytes and not once did i say that republicans didn't do the same thing. The fact that you are implying that i have said things that i haven't is really sad. "Straw Man" comes to mind whenever I read most of your comments.
@incitebytes Seeing as how "Straw Man" is an actual way to describe something and "So What" really isn't a proper, or professional way to describe my statements, you're really doing a lot to show what kind of person you are and to show your maturity. All you can do so far is try to rile people up with statements like "steaming piles of nothing" and "sorry to pop your fact-free bubble"? Nice way to try and get people mad, but a desperate move nonetheless.
@Detlockerroo, Thanks for your continued meaningless pontification on what or what isn't "factual" or "correct" or "professional," etc., ad nauseam. I must admit you come across is the most self-important, self-appointed arbiter of meaningless drivel that's been on this site in some time. C'mon, like I challenged you before, make a real policy statement with credible sources that challenges something I've said. What are you afraid of?
Seems the only way for us to stop the repuicans from giving away our rights to companies is get scary violent with only those who are responsible for it AT the places where this bullshit becomes official.
What, you really aren't my friend? I'm mortified, driven to the depths of despair, whatever shall I do? Lesbian don't like what? Attention getter for my film. Working amazingly. I've quadrupaled sales of my dvd in the last 4 days. Necessity is the mother of invention. Capatalism at work. Would you rather I go on the dole fot 99 weeks? At least we're talking, that's a start. Maybe you'll learn to love me. No?
I thought you were my friend! Feeling sad. What do liberals do when they're losing a verbal battle. Censorship, yup! Free speech! I dare you, I double dog dare you! Feigned outrage. No? Tha's at the root of all the problems. Us against them. the divided states of America. If both sides would stop repeating talking points they might think for themselves and be more inclined to listen instead of coming up with a defense based on tit for tat. Try giving a reasoned defense. Maturity and clarity helps
@DJacqu8351, What would ever make you think I was your "friend"? I tend to feel kindly towards people (yes, even the one's I disagree with), who come on here and make thoughtful, knowledgeable, reasoned comments about politics and policy. Let's review your "greatest hits" here: "lesbians don't like what?" "Fox = fair and balanced" and perhaps my favorite, criticizing Obama for playing golf. If you were any more banal/insubstantial, you get could probably get a job on Fox.
Gee, when I want "objective news," I turn to Rachel Maddow and Sean Hannity. Both are absolutely arrogant and complete and utter fiction. I honestly wonder who has the biggest ego. The problem is that people of the left recite Maddow as gospel. People on the right recite Hannity as gospel. Neither "flock" think for themselves.
Damn it, I wish there was some objective news out there.
@ronineditor, If you think Maddow is "arrogant" & "utter fiction," then it's clear you don't watch her, or you have serious cognitive issues. Your false equivalency between her (a Rhodes Scholar, w/ a PhD from Oxford in poli sci, who knows something about research, fact-checking and analysis) and a goof like Hannity, who clearly benefited from multiple social promos to get his h.s. degree, is absurd. More telling is YOUR "arrogant" assumption that Maddow viewers only get their news from her.
Nuclear meltdown, economics meltdown, genocide by a madman in Libya, Riots in the streets all over the middle east, government shut down, couple of wars. And where is the leader of the free world? Playing golf, being photographed, being a celebrity. We need a statesman. Don't worry though because he always shows up, a day late and a dollor short. But Duh, winning, right?
@DJacqu8351, Oh, yeah, let's get outraged -- Obama played a round of golf! Obama filled out his NCAA brackets!! Oh, my god, Henny Penny, the sky is falling!! How dare that black guy rest for a second!!! Meanwhile, I'm sure you were just as outraged when GWB spent 40% of his presidency clearing brush at his faux ranch in TX, while botching 2 wars and when he couldn't fuck that up any more than he already had, for his finale he crashed the economy. Love that phony, selective outrage!!
@incitebytes I was outraged at Bush and am outraged at Obama. You should be too, not for the golf and NCAA non-news but for the outright sellout of the country to Wall Street and the insurance companies. Sold out on single payer, supports making you supplement insurance companies by forcing you to buy their lousy policies. Pushing further war in Pakistan, continuing rendition, torture, etc.
Wasn't the sky falling when chicken little started squaking and peeping about the need for Obamacare? Passing it was so urgent there was no time to read it. Vote, just vote. As a matter of "fact" Pelosi said we'll find out what's in iafter we pass it. Talk about dystopianism, an imaginary place or state in which the condition of life is extremely bad, as from deprivation, oppression, or terror. A society characterized by human misery, as squalor, oppression, disease, and obercrowding.
@tenebroust, I appreciate your substantive comment and, in fact, share some of your outrage. Every point you make is valid. Although I may be disappointed in Obama (I am), I also know that the political alternative could likely be a flat-out disaster. I literally shudder to think about what could happen to the Sup. Ct. if Obama doesn't get reelected. That fortifies me to swallow my disappointments, while keeping in mind that every wrong/evil you listed gives conservatives an erection.
@incitebytes Easy tiger! the only one expressing any outrage is you towards me. I'm chillin like Magellan. Why bring up race, I didn't. I grew up in the military and have lived all over the world. My friends were my friends because we made friends. I didn't know racism until I was 15 years old and moved back from Europe. I am outraged , if you can back up your facts, that Bush spent 40% of his time clearing brush. I thought the figure was more like 38%
@DJacqu8351 Terrorist attack, crime rates through the roof, under the table deals with "enemy nations" and disobeying the UN. Where is the leader of the free world? Golfing in Florida, saying "Now watch this drive" after being asked what the hell was going on. At least Obama is trying. Bush just invaded the first nation he saw that had a dark beard.
states that vote in repug politicians get what they deserve. repug voters are so concerened about trying to screw 'the other ppl' that they ended up screwing themselves. well, have at it! enjoy!
@DJacqu8351, WOW, what a hilarious fucking comment!! Whoa, man, I can't believe how incredibly clever you are! A real phrase master!! I'm tellin' ya, it's just rockin' over here with gales of uncontrollable laughter!!! People are actually hurtin' themselves slappin' their thighs so hard!! Geez, how is it your not incredibly famous?!! Really, please stop by anytime and regale us with your 3rd grade wit/wisdom!!
You want capitalism unrestrained by government with winners winning and losers losing? Want to see an example? Take a look at India with “losers” begging and dying in the streets while “sacred cows” walk by (literally). Is this what you want? Not many “entitlements” there! Sorry, but I don’t want my children and grandchildren to live in a society like that and I will fight this class war at the ballot box!
Completely reasonable, when a city/township is in financial emergency. If your tax dollars are being spent to finance another city's government who should have control how their money is spent? This will not happen to more then 1% of MI city's. Shes totally putting a "spin" on this. Maddow is insulting everyones intelligence. This is really not about control nor are liberals sensitive towards big government. Really this is union popularity points for liberal pundits/elected officials.
she isn't the only one covering this issue. I looked into this topic. Its quite seriously the most anti-democratic thing that has ever happened in America, and you want it this way. Why are right wingers like this? I mean do you enjoy living in a shitty third world country because this is what the USA is on its way to become with bullshit policies such as this.
At a time when, by all accounts, CORPS. ARE MAKING AND SITTING ON RECORD PROFITS/CASH (that they're not spending to create jobs), Rick Snyder and his corporatist Repub cronies are ramming through the Repub-dominated MI legislature A $1.8 BIL. TAX CUT FOR THOSE SAME CORPS. At the same time, he/they are declaring "financial martial law" (watch the video) and demanding (surprise!) A NEARLY IDENTICAL AMOUNT IN TAX INCREASES ON SENIORS AND THE LOWER MIDDLE CLASS. Welcome to your Republican future!
@Tekvicious, I'm going to assume you're not suggesting/advocating assassinations. There's no room for that kind of discussion here. Do you really want to be in a league with one of the dumbest people to ever seek a major elected office (and that's saying something)? Of course, I'm referring to Sharron Angle, Republican senatorial candidate in Nevada this last cycle, who blithely encouraged "Second Amendment remedies" against Harry Reid, if she lost at the ballot box (fortunately, she did lose).
Repulicans are evil...blah, blah, blah. Holland has 2 nearly abandoned malls. Muskegon's downtown looks like Beruit. Most of the small towns across our 700+mile long state are dying a slow death where the last 500 people are supposed to run everything and perform demolition duties too. Everyone is consolidating in the 20-30 nicest communities and leaving the unfortuate minority holding the bag in their hometowns. So there is your starting point. Fix it.
@vuk1058, Wow, thanks for "adding" to the conversation. I always say that there's nothing more helpful than to restate the obvious and then say, "Fix it." Very profound.
@incitebytes Nice to be appreciated. From your moniker, I assume you have no solutions and just want to stir the pot. However we have a real state with real people and a huge problem. We are in a crisis and somebody being paid to sit behind a desk a thousand miles away and tell me that we don't isn't helpful. Neither is some sarcastic knob with a keyboard. It seemed to take 3 years for Jenny to learn that, a smart fellow like you should manage in 18 months.

It seemed to take 3 years for Jenny to learn that, a smart fellow like you should manage in 18 months.
Our state is a mess. Some individual communities are in a situation beyond the capabilities of people in them. See the debt hole that Muskegon Hts has dug themselves into and will have to deal with for 20+ years. Look at towns in the UP where they have population shrinkage such that they have crumbling infrastructures designed for 4x as many people left in the towns. Geographically it is a huge state with a lot less people every day. That's not sustainable.
@S0rceress0, [Updated/corrected comment]" I have added closed-captioning based on uploading the MSNBC transcript. The corrected date for the clip/transcript is 3/8/11, not 3/11/11 as I indicated earlier.
Republicans are not going to take over all village governments on a permanent basis. Government unions with their bargaining powers have destroyed the entire state of MIchigan. The governor is right to declare an emergency and to take what ever extreme measure possible to correct the problem. It's a temporary measure. Its tyical of liberals to blame conservatives for the exact things they are doing and calling it evil!
@Gunny5979, Please detail exactly (with examples) your allegations that, "typical of liberals to blame conservatives for the exact same thing they are doing" and "they [liberals] created phony emergencies and crisis" in order to jam their agenda "down our throats." Please, be specific.
@incitebytes There will be no explanation - at least not a coherent one, based in reality. Today's republican party doesn't roll like that. It's just all deranged all the time.
@drphonic7, Yeah, I know. I've found that the easiest way to get rid of most of these trolls is to ask them to back up their typical fact/analysis-free comments with specifics and credible sourcing. It works almost every time.
Please go audit a college course on Late Modern European History, wherein you will [finally] learn the defintion of Fascism. This will allow you to recognize what the Republican supermajority in Michigan, and others in Wisconsin, Ohio, etc., are attempting to do. Until then, your assessment of this situation, founded on a dearth of knowledge, is not to be respected. I mean this seriously. I am sick of stupid and will not put up with it anymore. Thanks.
Unbelievable! Here are liberals complaining that the Republicans are doing exactly what the Obama administration has been doing all along! They have been cvreating phoney emergencies and crisis' and then trying to jam their agenda down our throats! If it hadn't been for the government unions all these towns in Michigan wouldn't be in such dire straits. This is an actual emergency and the Michigan governor is going to take the necessary steps to solve the problem.
@Gunny5979 There is no actual emergency. People like you fall for these ploys and simply don't see the big picture. These types of initiatives that we're seeing in Wisconsin, Michigan and the rest of the country are to weaken the power of democracy. The Republican's that are high in power, want less of an opinion from the middle class and would rather financially deal with corporations.
It's interesting that the term 'unions' is being substituted for government services unions. The government services unions, having already monopolized municipal and state government operations, now drive the state to bankruptcy. The government services unions ideology has failed themselves and taxpayers, leaving only privatization or enslaving the states to the federal government as options. The difference between the two is that privatization can be ended.

Seems creative and shock value journalism is taking precedence over basic journalism ethics including truthfulness, accuracy, objectivity, impartiality, fairness and public accountability. This is just irresponsible.
@Amazed2122, First of all it's called opinion and, obviously, you've concluded that she's (1) lying, (2) inaccurate, (3) not objective, (4) not impartial (OK, if by "not impartial" you mean she's taking one side against the other, we'll give you that one; after all, it's opinion), (5) not fair and (6) not publicly accountable (really?, isn't that why god made Nielsen ratings?). Rather than just rant, why don't you offer some cogent proof/evidence to back up that she's "lying,' "inaccurate," etc.
While distracted by other, more pressing matters (at the time Charlie Sheen's decent into insanity and Lindsay Lohan's sticky fingers -- as this was pre-tsunami) Michigan turned into a oligarchy.

As a Michigan resident for over a decade, I wonder how many of the idiots here have any idea what kind of shithole was created by 8 years of Jennifer Granholm. Where was Rachel Maddow when Michigan led the nation in unemployment under democratic leadership?
metalslugxBTB 5 months ago

They are using the plight of the Detroit schools to claim an economic emergency, but if that is the reason then why didn't they write into the law that if they take over the Detroit school system and or fix it, then this law goes away?
swordsintopens 8 months ago

I just refuse to be blinded like the rest of you..
richrnndz2 9 months ago
Im not sure what upsets me more, the fact that all the replies aimed at me are in support for publicly funded unions, or that no one sees how dumb it woe be to preserve publicly funded unions! The board of the LAUSD just cut every elective program in every school, handed pink slips to the teachers who taught these programs. All because the largest district in the US doesn't have money.
richrnndz2 9 months ago
All you have to do is look at how broken our education system is, to realize unions funded by tax payer dollars DON'T WORK! Or that, for example, the LADWP, with its terrible ideas of watering days, and imposing fines for the water im already paying for!! HELLO!!
richrnndz2 9 months ago
Im sorry for being "unpatriotic" or an "einstien" but quite frankly any union being paid by tax payer money should not have power over the citizens that pay for it AT ALL!! PERIOD...
richrnndz2 9 months ago
Just an example. In the Northeast, there is not a single facility built by a foreign automaker company. They all produce in conservative states, mostly in right to work states. With the new Boeing, Embraer and RR facilities, the South also becomes the backbone of US aerospace manufacturing (including headquarters of Gulfstream, Spirir, Bell, Beechcraft, Hawker, Cessna, LearJet...). Meanwhile, left-wingers blame the wealthy and tax cuts for everything.
xaviqaz 9 months ago
@xaviqaz, JUST FOR EXAMPLE, the same states you site as the "backbone of US aerospace manufacturing" are also "welfare states," i.e., they receive more federal tax $ than they pay in, while many of those northeastern, upper midwest and west coast "blue" states paid the difference (see E. Klein @ WashPo: wapo(.)st/jz05EO - remove parentheses). Wikipedia: "The southern states had...the lowest median household income." Pretty much the same story for education, healthcare, etc. In other words, BFD.
incitebytes 9 months ago
@incitebytes Eastern Germany lives on welfare. Southern regions in Italy and Spain live on welfare too. But they are not more attractive to foreign investors (or domestic, for that matter). The fact that northern states usually are net payers has a lot to do with US big corporations having their headquarters there. But, are they building many new facilities in northern states? Google it
xaviqaz 9 months ago
@xaviqaz, I have no doubt that low wages (and nice weather) play a part in it, but you missed my point. Where's the "trickle-down"? You look at the Southern States (including TX) and virtually across-the board you see low median incomes, poor education levels, poor health-insurance coverage, etc. ad nauseam - in other words, a Republican paradise.
incitebytes 9 months ago
@incitebytes Texas and other southern states are exposed to broken federal immigration policies. Their population grows at a much faster pace. And if any of them tries to adress the issue (Arizona, now Georgia) they are bullied and blackmailed even with boycott threats. Southern states are also victim of failed liberal policies regarding black people. Anyway, that was not my point. The south was extremely poor not so many decades ago. The south is attracting so much investment now. That´s it.
xaviqaz 9 months ago
@xaviqaz, Yeah, liberals are to blame for everything. 300+ yrs of slavery, 100 yrs of Jim Crow, racial housing discrim./steering, redlining, southern bigotry (google "republican southern strategy"), and failure to pass comprehensive immigration reform were all "liberal" failures. Lol. Btw, heavily tax/labor-subsidized trickle-down "investment" has been going on in the South for decades (mirroring Repub. trickle-down federal policies), while the middle-class has collapsed. Damn those liberals.
incitebytes 9 months ago
@incitebytes When it comes to high value-added manufacturing and quality jobs, the word "subsidized" is out of place. I´d rather use it to describe certain privileged people in the public sector.
xaviqaz 9 months ago
@xaviqaz The trickle down was a lie to get people to accept Ragan's huge tax cuts for the rich.
jrwel14 8 months ago
@jrwel14 In Germany it was a socialist government who cut the maximum income tax rate from 48.5 to 42% and federal corporate rate from 25 to 15%. Yes, they cut taxes for the wealthiest and big businesses. They did in 2003-2004, when the country virtually grew zero. In Switzerland the rich pay no more than 11.5% to the central government, and they are not starving.
xaviqaz 8 months ago
@xaviqaz Still 42% is higher than the 35% we have now. Ryan wants to go back to pre depression rates of 25%. Trump said to tax the rich Buffet said to tax him higher. Look up Buffet says there is something wrong with a system where he pays less taxes than secretary. Also look up Trump wants to tax the rich. Gates and his dad tried to pass a law where the rich would be taxed in Washington state. There is a millionaires website where they want to be taxed more. It's everywhere.
jrwel14 8 months ago
@jrwel14 They are all free to donate money to the government. Anyway, who is the "rich"? The ultra mega wealthy guys like Buffet, who have a certain feeling of guilt for their success, or the hardworking guy that earns 500 thousand or 1 million dollars a year? 42% is not so far from 35%. Seems that some liberals would prefer a 80 or 90% rate.
xaviqaz 8 months ago
@xaviqaz No, BUT, this country did better when the rates were at 91% in the 1950s. Then the 25% in the last half of the 1920s. Last time the Republicans had a balanced budget was in 1956 with 91% rates. and the federal highway act . The 24-25% of 1925-1930 led to the depression. Ryan wants to go back to pre-depression rates.
jrwel14 7 months ago
@jrwel14 that´s a pretty weak argument
xaviqaz 7 months ago

This is why I always tell people not to pay attention to party labels. Bigger government doesn’t work, regardless of whether a politician is a Republican or Democrat. The problem isn’t Obamanomics, it’s Bushobamanomics. But since that’s a bit awkward, let’s just call it statism.
Ultramediacorp 1 week ago
@jrwel14 On economic issues, the only real difference is that Bush cut taxes and Obama is in favor of higher taxes. Though even that difference is somewhat overblown since Obama’s tax policies – up to this point – haven’t had a big impact on the overall tax burden (though that could change if his plans for higher tax rates ever go into effect).

Way to go, Einstein!

incitebytes 10 months ago
@incitebytes The use of the phrases "big lie" (in all caps, nonetheless) and "right-wing message machine," (complete with more use of the word "big" afterwards,) is unnecessary and arguably detrimental to your argument. They are buzzwords and rhetoric that I see used all too often in political debates to sensationalize something. As for expressing it better, you could have simply said something to the effect of "Unions aren't as prominent as you believe, representing only 14% of the workforce."
FlameBurger 10 months ago

@incitebytes and not once did i say that republicans didn't do the same thing. The fact that you are implying that i have said things that i haven't is really sad. "Straw Man" comes to mind whenever I read most of your comments.
Detlockerroom 10 months ago
@Detlockerroom, Fine, "banal" and "so what?" come to mind when I read your comments.
incitebytes 10 months ago
@incitebytes Seeing as how "Straw Man" is an actual way to describe something and "So What" really isn't a proper, or professional way to describe my statements, you're really doing a lot to show what kind of person you are and to show your maturity. All you can do so far is try to rile people up with statements like "steaming piles of nothing" and "sorry to pop your fact-free bubble"? Nice way to try and get people mad, but a desperate move nonetheless.
Detlockerroom 10 months ago
@Detlockerroo, Thanks for your continued meaningless pontification on what or what isn't "factual" or "correct" or "professional," etc., ad nauseam. I must admit you come across is the most self-important, self-appointed arbiter of meaningless drivel that's been on this site in some time. C'mon, like I challenged you before, make a real policy statement with credible sources that challenges something I've said. What are you afraid of?

Damn it, I wish there was some objective news out there.
ronineditor 11 months ago
@ronineditor, If you think Maddow is "arrogant" & "utter fiction," then it's clear you don't watch her, or you have serious cognitive issues. Your false equivalency between her (a Rhodes Scholar, w/ a PhD from Oxford in poli sci, who knows something about research, fact-checking and analysis) and a goof like Hannity, who clearly benefited from multiple social promos to get his h.s. degree, is absurd. More telling is YOUR "arrogant" assumption that Maddow viewers only get their news from her.

1) Is the primary purpose of a corporation to make profits for its owners?
2) Is the primary purpose of a government to protect the interests of its citizens?
3) If a government fails or is unable to protect the interest of its citizens, should it be replaced with a corporation?
4) Are there alternatives to replacing governments with corporations?
This isn’t about political parties or about greed vs. fairness. It is about what governments and corporations are and what their roles are.

Nuclear meltdown, economics meltdown, genocide by a madman in Libya, Riots in the streets all over the middle east, government shut down, couple of wars. And where is the leader of the free world? @DJacqu8351, Oh, yeah, let's get outraged -- Obama played a round of golf! Obama filled out his NCAA brackets!! Oh, my god, Henny Penny, the sky is falling!! How dare that black guy rest for a second!!! Meanwhile, I'm sure you were just as outraged when GWB spent 40% of his presidency clearing brush at his faux ranch in TX, while botching 2 wars and when he couldn't fuck that up any more than he already had, for his finale he crashed the economy. Love that phony, selective outrage!!
incitebytes 11 months ago

DJacqu8351 11 months ago
@tenebroust, I appreciate your substantive comment and, in fact, share some of your outrage. Every point you make is valid. Although I may be disappointed in Obama (I am), I also know that the political alternative could likely be a flat-out disaster. I literally shudder to think about what could happen to the Sup. Ct. if Obama doesn't get reelected. That fortifies me to swallow my disappointments, while keeping in mind that every wrong/evil you listed gives conservatives an erection.

I am outraged , if you can back up your facts, that Bush spent 40% of his time clearing brush. I thought the figure was more like 38%

This will not happen to more then 1% of MI city's. Shes totally putting a "spin" on this. Maddow is insulting everyones intelligence. A NEARLY IDENTICAL AMOUNT IN TAX INCREASES ON SENIORS AND THE LOWER MIDDLE CLASS. Welcome to your Republican future!

Fix it.

Gunny5979 11 months ago
@Gunny5979, Please detail exactly (with examples) your allegations that, "typical of liberals to blame conservatives for the exact same thing they are doing" and "they [liberals] created phony emergencies and crisis" in order to jam their agenda "down our throats." Please, be specific.

Dear Sir or Ma'am,
Please go audit a college course on Late Modern European History, wherein you will [finally] learn the defintion of Fascism. Thanks.
tamcon72 11 months ago
Unbelievable! Here are liberals complaining that the Republicans are doing exactly what the Obama administration has been doing all along! They have been cvreating phoney emergencies and crisis' and then trying to jam their agenda down our throats! If it hadn't been for the government unions all these towns in Michigan wouldn't be in such dire straits. This is an actual emergency and the Michigan governor is going to take the necessary steps to solve the problem.
Gunny5979 11 months ago
@Gunny5979 There is no actual emergency. People like you fall for these ploys and simply don't see the big picture. These types of initiatives that we're seeing in Wisconsin, Michigan and the rest of the country are to weaken the power of democracy. The Republican's that are high in power, want less of an opinion from the middle class and would rather financially deal with corporations.
paulpancake 11 months ago
It's interesting that the term 'unions' is being substituted for government services unions. The government services unions, having already monopolized municipal and state government operations, now drive the state to bankruptcy. The government services unions ideology has failed themselves and taxpayers, leaving only privatization or enslaving the states to the federal government as options. The difference between the two is that privatization can be ended.
