As an english-only speaking american, it is very irritating to me to wait in line at a grocery store and the customer/cashier are speaking spanish. Government offices prpvide spanish speaking employees. Groups in every store I go to are speaking spanish to each other. My local bank branch has almost all hispanic employees. School programs are spoken in two languages. My wife can't get a teaching job in our school system because most job openings require fluent spanish.

Aside from the emotional issue of legal versus illegal status, people are overlooking a bigger safety issue. If there is an emergency and the supervisor has to alert his crew, he must do it twice, once in each language. That means lost valuable time. A good place to start would be learning to SPELL English. First of all, "you" is spelled Y-O-U, not U. Also "wanna" is two words, spelled W-A-N-T-space-T-O. Before digging the speck out of others' eyes, perhaps you could spend a little effort in dislodging the plank in yours.

I live in south central los angeles, they drive very slow on purpose. I could careless for them, we need hispanic/black law enforcement/firefighters/paramedics here to take care of our minorities. That's the reason why I'm glad they're laying them off. Not all are lazy! however, they ARE in my area.

My English is now better then the rest. Strangely, once when I was working I noticed my US born English speaking coworker at my store who couldn't understand Spanish. As an english-only speaking american, it is very irritating to me to wait in line at a grocery store and the customer/cashier are speaking spanish. Government offices prpvide spanish speaking employees. Groups in every store I go to are speaking spanish to each other. My local bank branch has almost all hispanic employees. School programs are spoken in two languages. My wife can't get a teaching job in our school system because most job openings require fluent spanish.

Aside from the emotional issue of legal versus illegal status, people are overlooking a bigger safety issue. If there is an emergency and the supervisor has to alert his crew, he must do it twice, once in each language. That means lost valuable time. Sounds really backwards. Why fire or demote those who were hired first?? I can see if being bi-lingual was a job requirement. I know firefighting (wild fires) is a thankless job, more physical than residential firefighting. Was there such an emergency to hire, that some details weren't thought out. What a mess.I live in MD. Not too many wildfires here but we have a growing immigration (legal and illegal) it's only a matter of time until something similiar happens here.

Real nice. Just because one mexican hasn't bothered to learn English, the firefighter supervisor either has to learn spanish or be demoted or fired. That's 100% bullshit. At least at my job, it's required that an employee be able to read AND speak English. Not to mention that you have to be able to qualify for a TS/SSBI and non-english speaking mexicans DON'T qualify.

A good place to start would be learning to SPELL English. First of all, "you" is spelled Y-O-U, not U. Also "wanna" is two words, spelled W-A-N-T-space-T-O. Before digging the speck out of others' eyes, perhaps you could spend a little effort in dislodging the plank in yours.

A basic understanding of the English language should be a requirement to have such a job, not the other way around. This is America and English is our primary language. You don't see me down in Mexico taking jobs from Mexicans because they no habla English.

There is no requirement in Oregon that supervisors on contract crews speak any language other than English. There is a requirement that supervisors be able to communicate with the workers for whom they are responsible.
Consequently, if private companies elect to hire crew members who do not speak English, those supervisors must be bilingual or multilingual.
No ODF employees have been fired or demoted because of any language requirement.

I live in south central los angeles, they drive very slow on purpose. I could careless for them, we need hispanic/black law enforcement/firefighters/paramedics here to take care of our minorities. That's the reason why I'm glad they're laying them off. Not all are lazy! however, they ARE in my area.
