Merry Christmas Vince Guaraldi and God Bless you for all the music you've left us. The world is a better place for your efforts, Oh Maestro of Menlo Park.
@minamu8 Yup. I rallied for years starting in the early 80s when I'd see the LP forgotten about in the kids section of Christmas music in the stores. I marveled at the stereo soundtrack, with original tunes never heard in the show, and even special ordered many copies of it for family and friends. Nice to see it did catch fire as a CD, and is now a holiday soundtrack standard, apart from the show.
It says something about Guaraldi's talent that I totally, completely HATE "The Little Drummer Boy" as a song...but I absolutely love his arrangement of it.
@vaati000 I agree with you both - this version with those beautifully haunting voices really stirs the emotions - and I'm not even a Christian or a follower of any religion - and that's how great this is!
@RTA1973 I'm with you...I'm totally non-religious, but this piece is just plain beautiful. I just listened to it again while watching snow fall outside...it's comforting and meditative and nostalgic all at once.
It is such a shame that Vince has had the Charley Brown icon pinned to him in such a way that people forget that he was actually a genious as a piano player in general let alone a jazz player. The man and his crew were great and I would have liked to have seen him play. I have never heard anything about him being indifferent or otherwise on the subject, but I have to wonder??
@UNKLDAVE - Xavier Cugat said he was quite happy playing what the people wished & enjoying his swimming pool, rather than play what HE wished and go starving. How many songs do most of us remember from any one artist? Thru his music for Charlie Brown, Vince created an iconic sound that lives forever in the minds of at least 500 million people. He introduce jazz to millions who would never have heard it otherwise. Most who know him only for Charlie Brown would NEVER have known him otherwise !!
@chkjns I have to agree with you. I discovered Vince Guaraldi because of the Charlie Brown work he did (which in the UK barely anyone remembered) but it led me onto his other albums.
Actually, on the subject of Charlie Brown, it's a shame they stopped showing the holiday specials about 25 years ago as there's so much "good" in them compared to the overly sacharin sweet or completely disposable stuff on TV these days. Yes, there's the odd diamond in the rough but they're few and far between.
@UNKLDAVE - Look at the body of work and the innovation of Henry Mancini. Most of the world knows him for the simple little ditty of the theme of "The Pink Panther".
