Wish I could of met that man. Funny how people rate him on his success or stature. And say he didnt accomplish nothing. These people are ignorant. I guess since his success didnt make him rich or bring him fame that it wasn't success at all. Wrong he followed his dream and recorded it all. He did have friends bring him in shipments of various foodstuffs to supplement his fishing, etc. He had plenty of money for his subsistence lifestyle. Was he a strange man? Sure by ordinary people 'standards'. Vive la difference! RIP, Dick.
3)...Physical exertion associated with cutting trees down by hand and building a cabin with them. You also have to note that he spent the first 51 years of his life poisoned by the standard American diet. It's the quality of life that truly matters. Some live to 100 miserable and physically inept, while others live to 96 (Lalane) with a huge grin while doing more one-armed push-ups than bodybuilders. Thank-you rexorrama for discussing this with me, even if we disagree. I wish you the best!
2)...A diet filled with raw nuts, grains, healthy flora cultures, fruits, and vegetables (all organic) is known to extend the length of one's life by avoiding cholesterol and heavily toxic animals at the higher end of the food chain. The catch 22 lies in the fact that because animals are more biologically similar to humans, our bodies can more efficiently utilize their raw materials. In this sense, Proenneke had a lot of great animal products (not a McChicken or BK double) for the heavy...
1) I see your point. I would also like to point out that we all have bacteria and viruses dormant in our bodies all the time. We all have e coli and cancerous mutations. Those are things the body can handle quite well. It is when the immune system is compromised that these bacteria and viral afflictions flourish. It was getting away from the dietary influences of our profoundly sick society that allowed him to remain healthy in the wilderness. But as for longevity, there is more to analyze...
Dick Proenneke never got sick... after he moved to the remote wilderness, that is. Before that, while living in civilization, he nearly died from rheumatic fever. It's pretty hard to catch a cold/virus from someone, when there is no one around. Proenneke may have very well have eaten processed foods. That canister he's feeding the birds from came from a store, not a tree or bush. Who knows what he had flown in from his supplier, whom he placed orders with via catalog etc.
4)..And didn't find a single person over the age 100. I know it was a long post but I don't like seeing the spread of misinformation. If anyone has any doubts, read books like: Sugar Blues, Lick the Sugar Habit, Reclaiming Our Health (an EXCELLENT book), and Diet For A New America. Then apply what you're reading to your life and you will be happier, healthier, and without chronic illness. Thanks for listening.
@TheBetterForAll Dick Proenneke is feeding those birds from a canister that contained TANG orange drink.
When I Googled up an image of the nutrition label for TANG, it said: 28 grams (processed I'm sure) SUGAR for an 8oz serving. That's the same as soda pop. Oh well....
He looks and sounds like a smoker to me as well.
He died of a stroke a few years after that clip was filmed.
3)..It's the sugar that's wreaking havoc on our healthy flora in our stomachs. It's proven to also cause arthritis, osteoporosis, diabetes, asthma, and hypoglycemia, along with the usual suspects such as cavities and periodontal disease (just to name a few). Just because someone has told you that sugar is necessary doesn't make it so. Cultures in the Himalayas were living well beyond 100 until a road was built allowing the trade of coffee and sugar. Gary Young returned to one such tribe and..
2)..Refined sugar is how companies make sub-par quality food addictive. It's been proven as addictive as cocaine and heroin, only with a more subtle destruction of the body and decrease in quality of life. The amount of sugar in just one coca-cola is enough to compromise someone's immune system for an entire hour. A healthy body can withstand the stress of cold, extensive work-outs, anxiety, and even other junk food. Although other junk food will cause other problems in the body, it's the...
1Cliffcox, I appreciate your response. Although, my statement doesn't come from assumption; it comes from personal experience, anthropological study, and witnessing other people's personal experience. It's not my idea. It started with study, was followed by personal application, and strengthened further by witnessing a 100% success rate among other people. Unfortunately, sugar is so addictive, people will say anything to rationalize its use. Sugar in fruit and vegetables is important. Refined..
Just to clear this up for some people, he never got sick for one very specific reason: the absence of refined sugar in his diet. Many people will refer to stress as the culprit, but surprisingly enough, although stress is a toxin to the body,it's refined sugar that is trumping all other factors in the weakening of our immune systems. If you need proof then simply cut out ALL forms of REFINED sugar from your diet and regardless of ANY other factors, I guarantee you wont endure another cold or flu
@TheBetterForAll That's very assumptive. It MAY, and I heavily stress MAY be just one of the many reasons he never had any major illnesses. But more likely, he was just a healthy person and you're attributing your idea of what contributed to his health. Of the early staples pioneering peoples had in bulk, it was dried goods (beans), flour, and sugar. Even of the times of the colonist, sugar was a staple, and it was so basic it was taxed, which caused a revolt. Sugar is everywhere and needed.
@VREKDNEDIOS you must remember there was another guy, a writer involved in that and sometimes he would change things he thought it sound better and he volved out at me. he read something i don't recognise but it sound better to him they are that way they got to have their own way HOPE THIS HELPS!
I'd love to live in a cabin like that but I'm afraid I'd starve within a short time without someone flying in food. And lots of t.p. & everything else that I need. I would turn into one strange man living like that.
I can relate. My parents, Norman and Sylvia Wilkins, set out for Alaska at 50 yrs of age to carve out a life on the frozen tundra at Nelchina. Much like Dick Proenneke, Norman journaled every day of the 27 years he spent there. Those journals have now been transcribed into a 3-volume documentary journal: titled, 10,000 Days In Alaska.
You have to admit, he started when he was 51 years old and lived there for 20 some years... that's one strong individual. I've been thinking about it myself. At this rate, I'll probably be in my 50's before I ever get around to it.
So true.... dirtastegood. I could'nt agree with you more. My old saying is "sometimes you have get back to the basics and the simple necessaties of life." Dick Proenneke is a constant inspiration of how and where I hope to be in this life someday......
I want to live this life, But unfortunately I am to spoiled.
I cant kill a animal even if I would starve (I am to big of a pussy), I barely know how to fish, I cant last maby two-three weeks without internet, I need my cellphone, Need a washer to keep my cloths fresh and alot and alot more.
Whats even worse is that all this could be gone within days...
@Moe7133 if you read my post you will see I said "aside from manking" and all those animals you mention dies from natural causes more so than mankind.
@reluctantprophet7 man, its tough to find. ive spent alot of times on google maps, satellite view, lookin for a good spot. montana is probably one of the best places, perhaps another state far north, like wyoming, washington, northern idaho, north dakota..you gotta look. and you'd probably have to expect to hike your way in.
you know if u live long enough and pay ur taxes evry year, eventually the IRS will send u a letter saying u dont have to pay the IRS anymore, thats what happen to my grandparents, they are close to 80
@MrNomad81 Hi Mr Nomad. I am certainly no expert, but I think he laid the foundation logs on gravel so that the water drained away more easily and that prevents the logs rotting.
By their profound nature, cities and the very strict, enforced red-tape "environment" they provides makes most women thrive and most men (let's not generalize though) become total fat wimps, endlessly commuting from the moneymill to the hypermarket.
Burning under 100 Calories per day is NOT normal.
I never was into the goods run craze everyone seems to be into and love way more. Have you ever noticed how quickly a watch becomes useless once in nature ?
@geoduct I would love to show EVERYONE a life like this and have them experience it. It's a great feeling and everything you do is an accomplishment; from the food you catch, cook and eat, to the basic fact that you are sustaining yourself on nothing but nature itself. Which seems to be a forgotten skill by many.
I def admire his determination and his "no need for human contact"..that I have sort of a problem with. Most humans need that contact!! not only physical but mental and conversation!
Great Great video. I must agree with dirtastegood. Screw the corporate world, this is the way to live. The way to really enjoy life and its nature. What beautiful wildlife. You see nothing like that in the northeast.
Girls - to do the dishes Girls - to clean up my room Girls - to do the laundry Girls - and in the bathroom Girls, that's all I really want is girls Two at a time I want girls With new wave hairdos I want girls I ought to whip out my girls, girls, girls, girls, girls!

Refined..
TheBetterForAll 11 months ago
Just to clear this up for some people, he never got sick for one very specific reason: the absence of refined sugar in his diet. Many people will refer to stress as the culprit, but surprisingly enough, although stress is a toxin to the body,it's refined sugar that is trumping all other factors in the weakening of our immune systems. If you need proof then simply cut out ALL forms of REFINED sugar from your diet and regardless of ANY other factors, I guarantee you wont endure another cold or flu
TheBetterForAll 11 months ago
@TheBetterForAll That's very assumptive. It MAY, and I heavily stress MAY be just one of the many reasons he never had any major illnesses. But more likely, he was just a healthy person and you're attributing your idea of what contributed to his health. Of the early staples pioneering peoples had in bulk, it was dried goods (beans), flour, and sugar. Even of the times of the colonist, sugar was a staple, and it was so basic it was taxed, which caused a revolt. Sugar is everywhere and needed.

At this rate, I'll probably be in my 50's before I ever get around to it.

how come he made the floor gravel? was there a specific purpose for it?
MrNomad81 1 year ago
