It happens when the BOV (blow off valve) opens too late and the turbo "flutters" until it finally opens. It's generally considered to be a "bad" noise, in that it leads to premature turbo failure, but some argue that it doesn't matter. In my opinion, the second group simply doesn't know what they're talking about.

The transmission is not a manual. It does not require boost off-throttle to be vented, since it's on the throttle constantly. Even if it had a BOV, it wouldn't engage at all during the run.
