I have a black belt in shaolin kenpo, so I like to think I have something to say. It is my observation that punching in the air all the time doesn't teach the student exactly how to handle a fight. In my younger days, I have been in many matches against an opponent who actually knew how to hit a person. Kenpo doesn't get that hard core, in my experience. Mix it up with some MMA or boxing and then I think its gonna rock.
On a Speakman-Seminar last year I accidentally hit my partner with full power to the face. That was at the beginning of the technique and he didn`t fall, he was not k.o.
in fact he was standing there looking at me.
If you still believe in that old "one hit one kill" nonsense, then good luck.
Thanks for kenpo, that I learn material to be able to stop a fight when it`s really over, instead of do one action and look into the eyes of a raging, pissed off opponent.
that drill in the beginning of the technique is one of the most realistic ways to chase someone with punches. the first time in kenpo that you attack first.
I agree a kyokushin fighters attack is many less moves and twice as effective. Instead if getting slapped in the face 90 times before the big hit comes in kyokushinkai that big hit would be the first and last thing the opponent would see.
a kyokushin fighter wouldn't use just one move all the time. Neither would a kenpoist. They would both use as MANY MOVES NECESSARY TO NEUTRALIZE THE THREAT. I've seen Videos where Kenji Midori(Kyokushin) AND Mas Oyama freakin comboed a dude to KO him, using similar kenpo-type flurries. Correction, Mas used three moves to K.O. him.
My point? Try to hit the dude one time and he is still standing and you have a problem. ANd don't think kyokushin won't use combos to take ANYONE OUT!!!!
normally when someone gets hit just once , their normal reaction is to cover up , or defend . if it connects , then normally they'll be late to block , yet the block will still take place . this also triggers the brain to focus more and accomodate a focal point that will compliment his defense reaction. in other words , if you start a flury , someone will hit back , or cover up .
This is a technique that targets pain points to shut down neural response. After so many impulses the brain shuts down all messages to the nerves. Thus if you hit an area, multiple times, in rapid succesion, the brain will "fry". This is one of the basic principles of Kenpo. You see him strike multiple times on various different spots, this is what he is working. Not every person has time to throw the punch you speak of or cover up before the pain takes over.
thats because in kenpo you're supposed to do it extremely fast (shock and awe method) this was done slow for demonstration, but most kenpo schools have a checking method that allows them to invert or switch techniques mid execution to make up for target reactions. Hope that helps ^^
im not even in Mr. Speakman's line and i gotta say much respect to where hes taking his kenpo. altho im not into disengaging my attack after that 1 2, kick, hook, then reengaging with a kick and then 5 swords. both sequences are pretty valid by themselves already.
Why do you think kenpo is gay man? Did you go to a "kenpo" class once and somehow end up with a penis in your mouth? Is that why you think it's gay? I don't get it when you say gay, I think of sexual preference. I just want to know how did Kenpo appear to be homosexual or gay like you said?
I love American Kenpo! It is a well rounded fighting system! People don't realize a lot of American Kenpo schools nowadays teach grappling in the Kenpo classes! My American( Ed Parker) Kenpo school teaches it. So that way EVERY aspect of a fight is covered!
Jeff Speakman is one of my favorite martial artists.
OK, so I am an outsider to Kenpo-I was brought up in Kali/Bukka Jilan Silat family. I like the Kenpo hands. When I slow mo's the video I saw that much of the sound is coming from the guru slapping his uniform. Is this to confuse the attacker? Anyone Know?
Hi mate in kenpo the slapping helps with speed there is no stopping you reflect of your self and it helps to line up the body part ie the sholder when punching i do kenpo in the uk .
@1004w12 Just another perspective on it: I do this as well, as do many of us in Kenpo 5.0. In most instances that we do it, it acts as a counter-balance. The same concept as when our arms move in opposing directions to our legs. There is also a principle called rebounding, where we use our body kind of like the handle of a whip, to make strikes faster, and tighten circles (big circles = big problems). There's a video somewhere on youtube where Mr. Speakman briefly covers this.
Peace all. Save your energy for your training. Every style has something to offer. The true martial artist has an open mind about all aspects of combat. Knowlege is power.
Ed Parker said, "It's not an overkill martial arts, it's an over skilled martial arts."
What he means by that is, in Kenpo, you are taught to use your judgement of when you believe you need to stop or keep going. Mr. Parker was a smart man and I suggest you start studying things he said. Kenpo is teaching responsibility along with defense.
It would be an honor and privilege to train with Mr. Speakman. Kenpo has alot of overkill in each technique. The way my instructor explained it to me is that if the first strike doesnt land or cause the desired effect, then the next should, and so on. He joked and said if the first strike does have the desired effect, the rest should deter his friends from helping... or was he kidding??? Salute.
First off all of these techniques do work, many times in a fight people try to stay up these combinations exhibit the speed and power of kenpo. Jeff Speakman is not a joke, you cant fake those moves, or that speed. Now Steven Seagal doing Kung fu, is something entirely different and comical!!!
Boys, i thank for your critics. I wish that he falls at the first strike, therefore i can resolve more fast the situation. But what technique works to the 100%?. if i want that something works as i hope, i will carry a weapon with me all the time, and even so, i still have possibilities of failing.
Nice tape. I like the way you mates move. however that technique would never work. The guy would fall after the kick to the leg. The other 20 shots won't work! Nothing there to hit. Its just for POSING!!! Overkill mates Overkill!!

It's so much better to have a lot of techniques lined up, I don't see the overkill here.Strike like a wolverine on PCP until he goes down and then you take off. I don't suggest breakdancing on the person's head like kenpo does unless you want to be the baddest martial artist in cell block B.
Wow you can see how fast he is, when was this taken?

um , doesn't anyone notice that there is a direct counter , then 4 or 5 strikes after that , that the opponent does not even attempt to block ?

Its to get a recoil 'whipping' effect off your body to power the next strike - similar to what you can do with a pair of nunchaku. Hope that helps.
fitzpase 4 years ago
There is so much more than that.

What is this whipping theory called? I'm asking becuase I thought it was just a simulation of an attack.

American Kenpo's continous stikes are intended to be follow up strikes. Boxers usually throw strike after strike. Same concept here...
