- A Hard Day's Night - I Should Have Known Better - Long Tall Sally - I'll Cry Instead (*I think...) - Any Time At All - Honey Don't - I Don't Want to Spoil the Party - She's a Woman - Rain - Revolution - While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Wow, these are really Great. Are you the one who did the "And Your Bird can sing" one with all three parts, That was Great too. Wish they woulda had these in like the early 70's. Best you could find then was a Piano book on the Beatles. We learned it all from Ear back then.
just one question: how come you can see tape on the rickenbacker like lennon had on his to keep track of all the guitars he had? im pretty sure you dont have the actual one (no offense) but is it a replica??? Thanks, David
i would say this is pretty close to the way the Beatles executed their guitar parts.
Just remember there was nothing fancy about anything they did, just meat & potatoes rocknroll guitar playing for those times. they learned from 50s records and watching other players of the day. If you listen and learn some Chuck Berry and Carl Perkins you can understand the way the Beatles played.
Nope. Beatle guitar parts were pretty advanced for a 60s pop band. The chord at the beginning of Hard Day's Night is a good example, pretty sure they didn't learn that from Chuck Berry. Plus George Martin's deep knowledge of theory helped a lot. They were melodic geniuses, but they didn't know it.
Yep, their guitar parts were then and now not difficult to execute for an experienced guitar player. you're playing them, aren't you? I play them as well. Yet I agree that the Beatles were talented, clever and gifted, and their music was genius. Didnt say that Chuck influenced every song they did. Just saying that Chuck and Carl are good chapters for Beatle studies. you're a good player. cheers
You've nailed them down!Best Beatles instructional vid I've seen yet. It's not so much the chords and shapes that come into play, but the tone and model(s) of guitars themselves.
@tatvidprod Is "I want to hold your hand" the only song George played the Rickenbacker 425 on? And is this all guesswork how they played the songs, or do you know somehow? :P And are you sure that George played the Gibson j160e on the middle eight on IWTHYH? Please answer... :)
@Littlegun5 4. Any time at all, 5. Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby [I think], 6. I Don't Want to Spoil The Party, 7. She's A Woman, 9. Revolution, 10. While My Guitar Gently Weeps. I only heard 10 though. These are off the top of my head so I might be wrong on some, but I doubt it. :D
I have watched Beatles performances extensively and even THEY did not always play the same chords or even in the same key and more often than not didn't even know the words while recording..To say there is a perfect take of any song is an admission of total ignorance of the Beatles recording process. They were green and inexperienced at the beginning. However they did learn very quickly. They owe a debt of gratitude to George Martin, without which they would never have risen to the stature they did.
George Harrison admitted the opening chord is an "F" chord with a "G" note added by the pinky finger on the first string, third fret. Thats exactly what this person did. I suggest you research the opening chord on the internet. Also the bass note, piano chord, and snare drum are involved on the opening chord.
On Hard Day's Nite, it's the little finger (not ring) on the high G note/3rd fret...stays there when playing C chord...Same kind of thing when playing Norwegian Wood.
the songs in order are a hard days night, ishould have known better, long tall sally, ill cry instead, anytime at all, honey dont, i dont want to spoil the party, shes a woman, rain, revolution, while my guitar gently weeps
i like how you also wear the clothes they would have worn while performing the songs.
Thanks guys. I really enjoy creating these and it is certainly a labor of love. V.4 is currently in the works but it will be some time before it's complete. Them Beatles can keep a guy busy!!
Hey i'd like to thank Rob for making these videos because if it weren't for them, it would have taken an even longer time for me to learn guitar than I would have liked it to be. When I started all I had were note and finger placements. When I attended the fest for Beatles fans back in '04 and I saw this video I was extremely happy with what I was able to accomplish when i practiced these techniques.
And if it were possible, on volume 4 could you give any hints to what may be on it?
Hey thanks Rob, I think it's great that you're doing these videos and when V.3 comes out i'll be one of the first ones to get my hands on one of 'em. Keep on rockin' man!!
I would recommend anyone beyond beginner stage on guitar who is interested in really learning to play Beatles songs to try one of To A Tee's DVDs. I am not affiliated with To A Tee in any way, but I was blown away with the information provided and the instruction method. Be prepared to pay close attention, but if you do, you will be rewarded.
And to the host Rob Taylor, if you read this, many thanks for "And Your Bird Can Sing". Finally, I know how to play it correctly!
Really enjoyed the very little I saw of your work here. I have played in many Beatles Festivals and your work is great...and I have a fairly critical ear! Your approach to showing folks is visibly enlightening. I've done many shows myself around the world, and I can say that your spot-on playing out-does most of them out there. Well done!
You're right about this chord changes in "Revolution" as well. Many don't understand the whole "record it slow, play it back fast" concept. The Beatles and George Martin were masters of this wonderful technique.
The final mix is in a strange key. The key is in between A# and B. This is because they recorded the song in A and sped it up for the final mix. Watch them mime the song on the David Frost show. They're in the key of A. Why? Because that's the key it was recorded in. Revolution # 1 from the White album is also in the key of A.
@ScullyboyDX I did consider that, but I do my best to record the songs how I feel the Beatles did. I don't believe they used a capo at the first fret. Though, to play the song live, it's probably the way to go.
To: GetBack19, You may think you are a Beatles fan but bashing great musicianship like this clearly shows 1.) your lack of musical ability and 2.) lack of true appreciation for The Beatles. You have to at least have SOME ability on your side of the formula to play these classics- try to use your ears, not just eyes! I can imagine how poor your playing would be anyway with your poor attitude so just GetBack and let the real musicians play.
GetBack19, I'm sorry you feel that way. I will say that many, many people have found this DVD to be extremely helpful. The end of Twist & Shout is shown as clear as day for all to see. As a Beatles fan who knows what these songs need to sound like, I find your 'critique' to be quite over-the-top, untenable and sells the DVD way short of what it actually delivers.

Don't waste ur money. These videos suck. This guy can play like the Beatles, but his on screen fret bored and his way of teaching just sucks. It is really hard to follow what is going on. THE BIGGEST let down is the fact that he does not teach you the entire song. He play the entire song but does not teach you all. For example, he plays All of Twist and Shout and does not even teach you the ending. Don't Buy
We must have watched different DVDs. I bought all three DVDs and have learned a lot. Or maybe you just aren't able to follow another musician playing by watching the fretboard?

Great idea, and with VLC player you can rotate 180 degrees for a guitarist perspective. You should have done that on your end.
