Hitchens is a controversial character. Some of his anti-Islamic stuff borders on racism, and he's been a bit sexist at times. But I've rarely heard a better rhetorician. And I agree with everything he says here.

I think it's awful that a cleric should say that 9/11 is God's punishment; he could do with reading the Bible! However I really don't like Hitchens' coarseness and choice of words. You can express your view without being rude. If a Christian were to behave like in a TV interview, they would be berated and shouted down. Falwell may well have been an evil man, but just putting him down with petty insults leaves me totally cold. I expect better from an Oxford man.

I'm not certain Mr Hitchens is accurately portraying Falwell. Certainly Mr Falwell was controversial. However I personally don't think guys like Falwell and Robertson are truly malevolent in their intent. I could be wrong on that, and it doesn't matter ultimately.
My view on guys like that are they have the correct theology regarding the Gospel, however their worldly application of it leaves much to be desired.
