  • I have been coming back to this video every year since it was posted in 2006.

  • Linda Good.

  • at this point, this band were the best band ever, ever.

  • best mars volta vid i've seen!

  • gotta love the Son et Lumiere intro

  • I remember the first time I saw this... totally blew my mind.

  • @ifightaliens Watching this two years later and it still blows my mind.

  • I shat brix from this performance it was that fucking awesome!

  • Someone ask this guy to stop clapping to the music. A time and a place.

  • yeah, a concert. Oh wait...

  • @arvydas0069 Yeah sometimes it's like, Cedric- you have to sing into the mic for people to hear you.

  • @arvydas0069 Dude this was more than 8 years ago, live shows shouldn't sound like the studio work anyway, that's just bland and boring. I saw the mars volta in january and they were fucking amazing.

  • @arvydas0069 you obviously have no idea whats behind the concept of a live show buddy

  • @Petey0707 What, sounding like fucking shit?

  • @arvydas0069 Dude, I'm seriously not trying to be an asshole or anything; I have nothing against you, but with all due respect, if you really would like to see a good emulation of a studio performance in a live environment, you could always just go see Green Day or something, but please don't complain about and/or insult The Mars Volta. No hard feelings.

  • Mars Volta are great, for me one of the best bands at the moment, if not simply the best one...

  • yes they are, the best band of the world, through the ages

    ^^

  • It sounds con madre !!! LOL ...

  • great song

  • who's the chick playin keys?

  • Linda Good

  • Yeah, Linda Good, she the woman Ikey replaced.

  • haha yeah apparently she wrote down as a note on her keyboard 'play with more feeling' cause omar told her to one practice...and so yeah they fired her obviously

    good story :P

  • they didnt fire her she left.

  • well she wasnt right for the band and left, however that happened

  • yeah, think she was working with lisa maria prezley at the same time!

possibly not the right person for the job...

  • wat hapend t the original band???..

another band call sparta... ermmm they split isnt it????..now mars volta VS sparta,,p

  • No, it was At The Drive-In

ATD-I split into Sparta and Mars Volta

Jim Ward and Paul Hinojos made Sparta

Cedric Bixler and Omar Rodriguez made Mars Volta

  • then Paul left Sparta to join TMV

  • wait wait..someone told me engine down..did something to do with sparta...i dunno i dont listen to this stuff but..i like engine down.

  • who is the bassist here? i see an afro and i'm wondering if that's omar's brother, marfred?

  • its Ralph Jasso

  • Omar and Cedric's buddy from El Paso High School

  • where is this? it looks so small time. To think these guys were on letterman a year before. (these guys=omar n ced)

  • wish i was there

  • this is fucking amazing

i wish they'd kept making song like this

  • dude, jeremy ward.

  • His voice definitely improved over the years. His 05 and 06 performances are about a million times better than this. He's back in a slump now, but... hopefully he'll get out.

  • He's stated in an interview that there's some sort of hereditary illness that affects his voice; maybe this explains his recent change of tone.

  • ew. that's the "play with more feeling girl"

  • So? She's a great musician. Don't hate just because Omar said you should.

  • omars knows all she blows ikey all the way

  • This would have been awesome. To see songs from De-loused before the album even came out! Oh, how I wish I was there. Omar has said that the newest TMV album is already done (just mixing) and that they have already begun recording another new one. And for any of Omar's solo fans, he is coming out with TWO, count em', two new albums in Jan. of 2009.

  • whos on the bass?

  • Ralph Jasso

  • lol hahaha linda good what a name

  • Best In/ESP live performance I have heard.

Awesome closing song as it is an intro one.

  • Right he is better !

  • *how*

  • who is the name of the pianist?

  • Linda Good.

  • no he is not

  • where was this?!

  • lol Linda Good

  • fuck me sideways, that was awesome...

  • the clapping sounds sweet in the beginning. it goes right along. haha.

  • i was there

  • I reckon The MV are the best live band I have ever seen and I have seen a lot!!

  • The videos do suck but I have seen the MV 4 times in concert in New Zealand and Australia and Rammstein once only. I am an avid MV fan of their live music - love Rammstein, but the MV are tops.

  • el performance de esta banda en vivo es brutal!!

es una de mis bandas favoritas....

  • Fuck yeah theodore. I'll miss that guy but pridgen is awesome too. At least i can still hear theodore when he releases that album with the rage against the machine singer. This tuesday.

  • AT THE DRIVE IN bring them back lol

  • agreed. but Volta is pretty damn sweet

  • Holy shit that looked like a good show.

  • dam you rocked even in 02. thanks for this vid. it rules.

  • great bruja vibe!

  • get off of johns Dick he's probabLy stoned at the beach surfing

  • fuck i miss jon!!!

  • Im so glad that they removed the drugs from them because they are so much better now. not saying this is bad, But its is awesome to see how far they have come in skill and popularity

  • early tmv is quite inspirational

  • agreed, their progression is incredible. Dont we all hope to be that fucking amazing someday

  • No, this is 2002 (pre De-Loused) after Eva Gardner (bassist) left the group and before Juan became their permanent bassist. Ralph is playing bass here and Linda Good is filling in on keyboards while Ikey was unable to play. Marcel (percussion) does not become a permanent member until 2003, and Adrian (woodwinds) doesn't join the band until 2005.

  • you know your shit man!

  • ikey looks funny.

  • lol

  • @ECDCXL I agree. He must of done something with his hair differently.

  • che dinamita chavez!

    se discutio con este video!

    chido! jajaja xD

  • RALPH!

  • hyperkinetic, just love it !

  • early TMV...this is awesome

  • awesome footage

  • see u guys in 2 weeks minneapolis minnesota

  • linda good on keys

  • wow, it's sounds great!

  • laaaazy crowd !

  • Who is the chick playing keyboard?

  • yah i know she's like 8 years old

  • i just saw them in january they were amazing and cedric would feed off the crowd he also wrapped the mic cable around his head like a hhead band and danced around.

  • Haha, I love Cedric, he like is crazy live!

He gets SO into it.. I love it!

  • Haha, I could imagine he'd be the wild boy in the group and same with Omar, he hitchiked around America!

    Go TMV, they rule!

  • His drums must be sore in the morning.

  • i love the mars volta however the only time i got to see them was with A Perfect Circle and you couldnt smoke in the building take pictures or anything. however i was right up against the gate and they were amazing. some older douche bags in the crowd were throwing crap at them and they dismounted the stage after 40 min and 3-4 songs into deloused.

    :) :(

  • OMG, this looks like it took place in someone's basement!

    I love it!

  • I think his voice sounds perfectly finee... This was just the first version of the song that he sang differently on

  • whoes the chick on the keys?

  • linda good

    i did her

  • did you really

  • omar is a little fast at 4:24

  • yah i noticed that too but i liked it all

  • the whole point of live performance is to be messy. its like sex, thats part of the apeal. i didnt mind the clapping. i REALLY want to see them live but im afraid it will be in some huge ass place and i want to be able to feel their energy and fear that any moment cedrics going to fall on top of me.

  • The dude clapping has good rythem.

  • this was on my birthday

  • mine too!

  • billy-joes birthday too

  • Cedrics and omars too. wow thats alot

  • This was 73 days after my birthday!!!!

  • the dude clapping is annoying

  • so sick

  • latinos, One hundred percent, chingada madre que si.

  • whoever is clappin is a true doosh

  • even here his vocals are better than most bands live, that says alot for cedric and not much for the peppers. muse got kick ass vocals also..

  • You guys realize your commenting on a video thats nearly 5 years old. There's no telling how much different cedric sounds now that its 07...correct me if im wrong though

  • listen to the loser clapping rhythms during linda's intro hahahaha

  • I've honestly never heard TMv outside of my own CD collection, my Old University's jukebox and Q Magazine. Apparently they get played on XFM in Manchester sometimes, but I'm yet to hear that.

  • i dunno. i heard them play in september in saskatoon. cedrics voice was great. especially in 'the widow.' maybe he couldn't hear himself that much when he played

also, this show here is one of their first. when cedric actually started singing instead of shouting. so he's not quite good at it yet.

  • Agrees. Ced can NEVER hear himself. The boy should invest in some In Ear Monitors. Fantastic stuff, although with the volume they play at they probably won't be as effective.

Might work on tracks like The Widow, Asilos Magdelna and El Ciervo Vulnerado tho, i guess.

  • i love the mars volta, i have seen them live a few times and i am somewhat dissapointed. cedric can't sing live at all, does he have someone else sing for him on the records because he never sings on key live. there energy on stage is great and their talented but cedric, what happens to his voice?

  • Hes actually worked on it heaps. hes spot on at most live performances now. but man you know how freaking hard it is to sing that stuf?! haha.

  • I've seen them twice and both times he nailed the whole set from start to finish for almost 3 hours. He's an amazing musician as are all the band

  • hey can sing it in the studio, but he's always out of breath when he's trying to hit the notes, because its his duty to entertain.

  • a very very great band, i just hope they dont go commercial. most bands that r good, get better and then u c them all over mtv and then thier music starts going under. i hope these boys alwa=ys stay true if they do ill be a fan for life.

  • haha you can find em on mtv 2

  • this is an awesome vid.

  • this is the best live performance of inertiatic esp ever

  • I agree. This is pretty close to the album version as you're going to get with this song.

  • the way he moves.

    oh my oh my.

  • Damn, they sound so TIGHT in this one!

  • really great... I would like make the concert like that...

  • i am an idiot, will u do me a favor and just come kill me now and save me from my stupidity. i wasnt being sarcastic, please just make yourselves feel better and tear me downm, come on lets all take part now....

  • I hate to say it because I love the mars volta but this is awful - cedric is SO out of tune I had to stop listening to it. Are you sure this isn't just a cover by some lookalikes?

  • can you say, "we used to play stoned out of our minds?"

no shit they sound awful, cedric couldnt sing out of tune if he tried.

  • I understand why you dont like it. it's not accessable music. you should try listening to at the drive-in first and keep an open mind. What is music to you? there is no such thing as bad music. it is all a matter of taste. I didnt like it at first but after hearing it a couple of times it started to grow on me. now TMV is one of my vavorite bands.

  • yeah me too

  • I like the sentiment, but that just sounds naive. There is such thing as porrly made shoddy music. While TMV are a fantastic group, their studio work far outshines their live performances. I think when they grow up a little more and settle into their style (if they last that long) we will eventually hear some truly terrific stuff out of them.

Having said that, the energy and presence they have on stage is unrivalled. Love to see them collab'ing with Flea and Frusciante.

  • you havent hear enough live TMV then

  • wow, old tmv, brilliant!

  • awesome...just awesome :D

  • aww the lighting wasnt good enough for u man, fuck off this shit is real rock the way it should be and the vid is raw and real

  • hahaha, its a saying, you retard...

He/She means it doesnt portray them too well, as opposed to the lighting being off.

  • Hahaha you're such an idiot. Its a saying; don't get so dick hurt, you little bitch.

  • The mars volta is the best band ever...the best

  • i really love the mars volta but thsi video doesnt show them in best light. its so like messy.

  • Live recordings seem messy because they're missing the key element. It's all about being there and feeling the energy of the music. If I was there, I'd be dancing my pants off in the front row. The audience seems too calm...

  • awesome vid

  • How long ago was this!?!?

  • Oh, I see now!!!

  • 10/02/02

  • Linda Good on keyboards!!! man those were the good ol' days! and I believe that is Ralph Jasso on bass

  • ikey rulz...Hes doin shit w/ 2mex, colab

    The Look Daggers.. Check'em out

  • HOLY SHIT! This is old!

    Never the less, amazing.

  • ewww no ikey!

  • ^lol

  • man these were the good days
