You don't really need to strain it, but it depends how long you leave it. Me and my girlfriend made it a while back, and we left it over night, so the skittles dissolved completely, just leaving a bit of scummy sugar residue at the top. Just as a note, we found that the people at the party liked the red and purple ones best, and thought the yellow one tasted kinda odd.
