The program is rumored to have been bankrolled by the NZ Government, embarrassed at an earlier decision to scrap the entire fleet of airforce combat jet aircraft.
This monster is NOT A JET PACK because it's not a "pack". It weighs 300 pounds. There's no way you could walk around with it strapped to your back. It's essentially a helicopter without the canopy.
When you get the weight down to 40 pounds, then you can call it a "pack".
@sbunny8 It's in the same ballpark as a jetpack. Think of it like computers, they used to fill rooms. In present times, you carry one in your pocket. This is the basics of designing what could possibly be future travel. I imagine a "hybrid jetpack" will eventually surface on the market.
@Mercalio Surely you aren't suggesting that back in 1977 IBM could have called their 3031 model a "pocket computer" and nobody would have objected to that name. The IBM 3031 was NOT a pocket computer; it weighed 500 pounds. The Sharp PC1500 was a pocket computer; it weighed half a pound. This HELICOPTER weighs 300 pounds. It's not a "pack". A pack is something you can strap on and walk around with it. When it gets down to 40 pounds or less, I'll call it a pack.
@sbunny8 Not at all, i'm merely saying that with design, trial and error, and overall changes in modern technology that it could be represented as a pack, speaking as you do strap it on. Although you can't walk around with it on, it's still a viable term. I suppose it's all just perception though. We're both entitled to our opinions, and I respect yours, aswell as your knowledge of the matter.
if your going to use a 2 stroke motor you might as well use expansion chambers on the exaust. the exaust system they use robs free power that properly designed expansion chamber provides, on the order of a 50% increase in power for the cost of sheet steel.
HAS ANYONE EVER SEEN THIS MECHANICAL NIGHTMARE FLY HIGHER THAN 4-5 feet? or in a mild 15-20mph crosswind? They eagerly tout an 8000 ft. ceiling YEAH RIGHT!. That makes good press and sounds impressive BUT just once, I would like to see it fly out of ground effect! COME ON MATES! SHOW EVERYONE I'M WRONG! Hook up a retractable safety tether and take it up on a sunny day to 25 - 30 meters....Remember, the US had Moller's Skycar, now it looks like NZ has the Martin Jetpack! SAME DREAM DIFFERENT ERA
@airwalker13 shutup douchebag, clearly this is still in the design phase, which is perfectly acceptable for something this new. Do you really think that they can achieve hovering stability and yet not eventually break ground effect? Have some appreciation for how long modern product design can/should take
@bleedinfingers Listen up numbnuts! This so called jetpack has been doing this SOS for years now. Don't give me that design phase BS! The only groundbreaking that widow maker machine is going to do is when they attempt to fly it outside & high on a windy day! That's when we'll see BROKEN GROUND! Maybe you should consider applying for the job of a crash test dummy pilot? Until then...show me just 1 video of that "widow maker" flying 100' off the deck ...or STFU !
i checked it out and its kinda like a helicopter really, a helicopter is pretty screwed with wind.. what does it do? it turns into the wind, kinda like when yyou walk on a windy day, no matter where the wind is coming from you're slightly turned into it, the jetpacks center of gravity is lower than the fans , so as the jetpackpitches, the center of gravity wishes to ketch up with the fans and level the fans,
i just wrote 128 characters over the limit explaining everything realy clearly, i cut it in half to post it, reloaded the page and lost everything...
anyways, its like a helicopter or a person standing on a windy day, you lean towards the wind to equalize gravity and the air friction, the jet pack staybalises itself out because the center of gravity is lower than the fans, so if you pitch the center ketches up to below the fans, if you roll, the center of gravity level's out the fans
You've gotta start somewhere, and this is better than most could hope for.
You don't just build a backpack that can launch you into the stratosphere, you build a giant machine that lifts you a few feet above the ground and work from there.
Computers were the size of rooms when they first came out now I carry one in my pocket thats as fast as my damn PC. Give it time in a decade we will be laughing at this.
@scarfacefan4eva Why a decade?! I predict in 5 years people will use jetpacks as much as there are people using segways nowadays....of course in my country that will still be ZERO but....you get my point!
