Ah yes, Count Grishnak. I probably could have found that out myself if I'd have had the patience to read through Varg's website.
Having said that though, can't have been completely unknown. Amon Amarth took their name from LOTR, Mount Doom. I believe they were formed around the same time or even before Burzum. Not to mention the band Fenriz has for a short time, Isengard.
Burzum - "Darkness" in black speech, also one of the words on "The one Ring". Varg also used Grishnak(minor character in "The Two Towers" as a stage name.
All this obviously being before the movies came out, while the Lord Of The Rings was still an unknown thing.
Actually, LOTR was very popular even before the first movie. They even made at least one video game based on the book, before the movies came. I think LOTR may have been a big inspiration to many early BM bands. Kinda nerdy, though...

It was actually meant to be lord of the depths. "but of course Euronymous knew better*sarcasm*" - Varg.

Really? Damn. =/
I yanked it from Fenriz Presents: Oldskool Black Metal.. lol.

Lol, not many people know that. The name Burzum also comes from Lord of the Rings, in fact Varg would probably have been called a nerd today.
