I always preferred Eric's "88" version of "After Midnight" than his original one. I thought it was a much more instense, rock-sounding version. And now to hear SRV contributing some tone to it... makes it even better!
Now I'm going to try and find a FLAC torrent of this to see if I can get this with better audio quality.
I always trip out... all these comments on better this and that... cray and clapton seen em 4x each(at least)... the two Kings in their 60's!!!( albert was even older than that probably... so thin and frail). Trucks, Collins, Jeff Healy, EJ.... thats the short list... So blessed... but they all had one show that was better than the other. When any of them was on top of their game there is no better person or player... just songs I like more at the time, and yes Albert KILLED it for one song.
sorry folks clapton is history as is vaughn, neitehr better or worse,as was hendricks, but none approached the other as god,as the all had there itols from b.b.king to robert johnston, muddy waters and many others, so it isnt fair any idolized anyone but learned there own styles and took it further,as we all should no some where else.........
Dear God: We would be happy to offer you Justin Bieber, the Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears, T-Pain, and many more if you would in exchange, return Stevie Ray Vaughan to us!
P.S. John Bonham, Dio, and Dimebag Darrell would also be welcomed back with open arms!
I love SRV but EC is the more spiritual player, tends to more 'colours' (when he is on the ball) ..stevie will always be the guy that brings a smile to my face because of his technical flash and wonderful feel,no one plays like him, with his intensity . EC doesnt bother to pull it out the bag much these days, but when he does he is the only only that gives me goose bumps..listen to solo on 'just like a prisoner' (behind the sun album)...both as good as each other is what i really think i guess!
@wannabe1975 Never heard a more emotional and soulful player than SRV; the only one that truly not only puts feeling into his playing but can reach the audience deep down inside. That's what he's famous for not for some "technical flash" (he's not Malmsteen or Vai, have you not noticed?) He's the only one who makes me stop and listen. I'm saying all this for two reasons: 1) it's true to me and 2) to lay emphasis on how individual perception of music and musicians is
The two best players that have ever picked up electric guitars. They've done things that no one will ever do with a guitar again. Both of their styles are so unique. I prefer SRV's, because he plays so hard with so much passion. But they both are THE two Guitar Gods. Btw, nice editing style.
The people who are here insisting that one player is great and the other stinks are probably the same onces who 10 or 15 years from now will say "what happened to all those great guitarist from back in the day?" Well, they were here, but you missed 'em 'cause you were too busy arguing to just take the time and enjoy them.
There's no point in debating over the better guitar player here. Both these guys play with so much soul, it's awesome this video/recording even exists
Arguing over who's better in this video is like arguing which is better after it drives by.. A ferrari or a bad ass muscle car... Respect them both, they are perfect compliments to one another.
To paraphrase Clapton after hearing SRV solo while sharing the stage together, "How in the world am I going to follow this guy?" When a guitar legend like Clapton ponders exactly what bag of tricks he can muster to match Stevie, you have to marvel at the blistering Texan's prowess. I'll tell you what, though -- Clapton's smooth style certainly complements Stevie's grittiness.
SRV solo was mind blowing, but y9u have to admitt that clapton did good on this one aswell, amazing solo from clapton. you can tell that was his reponse to SRV playing
hopefully... perhaps Larry Carlton and Wes Montgomery fans are a little more civil... lol I expect this kinda behaviour from Shred lovers... but I thought blues lovers knew that it wasn't about who was better but just the sharing music with fellow musicians.. but dammnit!!! lol I was proven wrong... anyway best of luck to you :)
thanks I agree... I was just on another video and everyone is comparing all these great players trying to prove who's better than who... jeez what happened to the good ol' concept of sharing music and jamming for fun or expression... it always gets to me..... at least someone understands
So the debate over who is a better guitar player can never be solved...they are different. It comes down to who you like better...and if every music fan voted for one or the other, it would amount to nothing more than a popularity contest I guess.....
Longevity can work against the artist. Over time there is a huge segment of listeners that never heard the early stuff or can't imagine the magnitude of the artist in his prime because they weren't there. EC was called God...that's magnitude. In 1990, God got outplayed by SRV, but God will always be God because he moves his listeners in ways that more talented guitar players do not. Its music...it defies logic. Not that SRV doesn't move his listeners, just not like EC.
Thanks, xykep67. Great video. As to SRV v.s. EC, please, people, give it a rest. They loved and respected each other and we are all lucky to have had both of them.
this must have been a close date to when srv died...him and eric clapton both boarded a different helicopter at the same time, such a shame, losing one of the best guitarists in the world! R.I.P SRV!!!
Both great. SRV ought to be better than EC, since he came on in the 80s and was able to go to school on all who came before him, notably Jimi...just as EC went to school on BB, Freddie, etc. To compare SRV to EC in his prime is more fair. What if EC passed away after the Layla album was released? How great would he be perceived? How much less criticism thrown his way? I take EC in this comparison...he never breaks a sweat, gets extreme feeling from the same simple notes and licks. Just my view.
for you morons who insist on saying one is good and the other sucks, read Clapton's book, he says Stevie Ray is probably better than him, but they were close friends and Clapton was an idol of Stevie Rays. Do a little research before you make posts
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
no way is stevie better... he played the same pentatonic scale and never ventured out. Dont get me wrong, stevie is a god but clapton is the best blues guitarist out there
False. Stevie knew the fretboard of his guitars down to individual grains of wood. If you listen closely, you'll hear a ton of intermittent notes and melodic variations that aren't even in the pentatonic scale.
-Old rule applies, if you don't really know, don't act like you do.
Just so ya know kdw456. The English Restraint thing is a myth long past. haha! Great player. I'm more of a Vaughan fan. But there is no who's better. Only who you thinks better. So perhaps saying ''I think Stevie Ray Vaughan is better'' instead of ''Stevie Ray Vaughan is God and Eric Clapton sucks dick'' would make you sound less like an arrogant prick and something approaching respectable. Who's with me?
There will be no SRV bashing in this video, Grga is already on patrol. Any one who doesn't believe SRV is the greatest thing to walk the earth get ready for a verbal beat down.
distinctively difrferent in style...while Eric can rip, as we all know, he often offered Stevie the driver seat so to say when playing together..out of awe and respect to Stevie...he admired and adored Stevies playing..still does..when stevie was peaking musically..on any given night say, Eric could not really match Stevies tone and intensity, but Stevie would have to lay back to match Eric at his wildest..Texas vs. England I guess, Raw emotion vs English restraint?.dont know..just rambling.cya.
Oh god!!! Stevie's solo is so devastating. I mean... Just listen that last note pim! pim! pim! pim! pim!
