He was loaded on steroids for the 1st 2 legs of the TC and Drugtow admitted he took him off of them for the Belmont. Drugtow has a confirmed 68 recorded medication violations in his career at 15 different tracks. The International Racing Commission has asked the NYRA to permanently ban him. They will likely not do it because they dont care about racings integrity any more LOL
i think is very unfair that horses as Da`tara running only one race of triple crown, because comes more fresh and big brown or smarty jones must have through two hard races, that is a reason because none horse get triple crown.

I think this race marked the 60 day point from the last time he was injected with steroids according to Dutrow. He never looked like the same horse after the Preakness. Struggled to beat Coal Play at Monmouth and barely won a Grade II in his last career race.
Smarty losing in the stretch in 2004 broke my heart much more than Big Brown pulling up. Another year and it's Derby weekend so here we go again woohoo!

If the whip is used CORRECTLY,it causes NO DISCOMFORT to the horse. Actually the term whip is incorrect,it is not a whip,but rather a leather crop. It is used to signal a horse to give all it has. When trained correctly the horse will soon begin to wait for that signal. Many times the ears will be cocked back as if to say hey lets go! Some seem to forget that there are rules in place for jocks who use the "whip" excessively. If a jock is so hamhanded with a whip,well his license should be gone!

On the subject of using a "whip". First of all it is not a whip(like a bullwhip,etc.),it is a stick with a looped piece of leather at the tip, When used correctly,it DOES NOT cause pain and it is used to be a signal for more speed Second,there are rules in place that will discipline a jock if he uses the stick too much. If he raises his arm above his shoulder he can be suspended. The horse racing community(of which I belong) takes many steps to protect the horses. Many of you do not know this.
exactly! like a lot of horses are trained to listen to the whip.. for example- near the end of the race the jockey will give the horse a tap, so they know it's time to give it all they got. it doesnt hurt them, it gives them signals. and the jockeys stirrups are up so high they can't communicate with teir leg very well

if i'm being honest, i dont have a problem with the whip. it doesnt hurt them though. they have way thicker skin, and its like a pinch to encourage them. most jockeys who have a bit of experience know that some horses respond to it, some dont. those who arent in the know and who whip the crap out of their horses, they should be punished, and they are. He people, there is a picture out today that clearly shows the reason WHY Big Brown ran so badly ... his right hind shoe was hanging halfway off! The picture was taken by a free-lance photographer at about 200 yards into the race before they reached the first turn. That's the reason he ran so bad, so all you Big Brown Haters can just go take a hike. Tell you what you do, go put on a pair of cleats and then losen the cleats on one side and try running that way and you'll see why he quit.

Knowing about the shoe, I am glad we finally have a reason for the poor perfomance. But, I am still glad he didnt win, because for a horse to win the triple crown, it needs stamina and most of all, it needs heart to win. Big Brown obviously didnt have enough.

Can someone give me insight into why the horse community is so against a Triple Crown winner, besides the money involved? There's no doubt Da Tara deserves props for the wire to wire, but the time was rather pathetic. The whole thing stinks, watching the race over and over convinces me of that. KD NEVER let him go, he rode that bit right through the last turn and right to the point of pulling him up. There's no doubt BB is a great horse and will hopefully prove it in the near future...
From the first round of the Triple Crown,it was very obvious that Big Brown wasnt capable of enduring big running distances (above 1800mtrs).
moreover the horse doesnt want to start as head of the race.he wants to follow the rest of its competitors and then react,counter-attack and win the race.
kent shouldnt make the horse to face head to head the other horses from the start of the racing.

Its obvious for those that know horse racing,its clear whoever put on the bridle did it so tight that whenever desormeaux tried to manuver the horses head he kept throwing it out of protest to pain, dutrow and desormeaux got paid.that fucking little lyar at least smarty lost it in the final inches,silver charm in the last stride, but this shit was too obvious.
If his bridle was too tight, why didn't he throw a fit warming up? Why didn't he throw a fit in the gate when the starter was holding his head sideways by the rein? Lets not forget it was a hot as hell day. Like a marathon runner or even a nascar somethings just run better in different tempertures. It was to hot of a day for BB. He was winded I dont blame anyone. He did the right thing by holding him he would have killed him if he pushed him. Great recognizion by the jockey. Take the loss learn and build on it and race again.. Better that way than to kill him for what to try and please the crowd not worth it.
What are you talking about? KD eased him up after feeling that Big Brown just wasn't there. He explained why. When KD asked Big Brown to go, he didn't. So he didn't push him. KD wanted to win just as much as anyone else.

Sure seemed like Desormeaux missed a big hole at the start of the race and was forcing rankness, plus to keep him THAT WIDE or was Tale of Ekati keeping BB out there? Don't see why Des. didn't keep BB on the rail and let him run like he wanted to, instead he kept BB's head high and forced twice as much work out of him. But, I'm just an amateur fan and can't speak on a prof. standpoint, just seems like something wasn't right!

2 weeks before the race, BB has a 1/4 crack, 1week before the race, they announce that they are increasing the strength of the treatment for the abscess, and that they will put off repairing the crack. 5 days before the race they again put off the repair, 4 days before the race they put off the repair but decide to work the horse anyway.......AND ALL YOU GUYS CAN COME UP WITH IS FIX, FIX, FIX..Come on now, you are smarter than that aren't you??????

Okay people.. too straightnen this out, Brown is NOT a failure. He didn't win the Triple Crown, but he won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, young! I watched the race live and I couldn't believe it!!Something definitly was wrong for him not to give one of his explosive runs around the stretch,it's not like him.I found 7 possibilities why he didn't win:he broke from #1 spot,he possibly got kicked,he bumped into 2 horses,his cracked hoof,that he was off steroids,the heat,or it just wasn't his day.Even though there are very good reasons I'm still in shock!this is the only race he's lost,and he lost it by the same amount of lengths he wins by!
Big Brown showed the signs of a horse who either bled during the race,which he didn't. The other sign is that he just simply didn't handle the track. He is way too talented to just have NO KICK,otherwise. If he had been just a little tired he would have at least been able to make a bid for the lead,it is that simple.
I think Big Brown knew Da Tara was the one to beat and Kent didn't listen to his horse coming out of the gate but at the same time, I have to applaud Kent for pulling him up instead of trying to run him out which, if it didn't break him in body, would have broken him in spirit.
I'm sure the heat, the hoof crack and the messed up training all took the bloom off him - but temporarily.
Big Brown could certainly come back and trounce the field in the Breeder's Cup. He is still a great horse.

Seems kent found out on thing you "can't do whatever you want with this horse" as he had been chanting all week..He started to relax and when that horse came over in front of him he just ran off and tried to shoot the gap between the 2 horses...Why the big panic in the first 1/8 of a mile in a 1 1/2 race? The track was speed/rail favoring all day (like every big day) he should have really wrangled him back if he wasnt going for the lead....
kinda looks like BB wanted to go to the front in the begining and wasnt allowed so maybe he just decided to say fuck it and not go when asked..Maybe if he would have been allowed to run the front he may have done it but no one will ever know why he did what he did.
I totally agree with you redrumred2003. There was that one instance where it seemed like BB wanted to jump ahead and desormeaux sort of restrained the horse and from there on Desormeaux lost control of the horse. Screw job on BB's part, which I'm kinda relieved in saying so because clearly BB was game.
Paid off?? Jesus, either you have very little knowledge of thoroughbreds or you had a bet. They are animals. Big Brown won two very substandard classics, and is undoubtedly a very good horse, but we see such disappointments several times every season. Not the biggest surprise really was it?
I am from Australia and i dont understand why you would give up a cosy run behind the leader and travel 4 and 5 wide for the hole trip.A horse 3wide in the breeze wins probably 1 in 100 times here. Most jockeys here like to get the cosy run behind leader then start making a run on bend or the top of the straight.
I think it was a great ride of Kent. Not all jockeys would willingly give up a race like the Belmont. True, he said he had "no horse" beneath him, but still...to ease him up like that showed that he truly cared about the horse.
I really hope Big Brown will come again. It's funny how Derby winners never seem to fire in the fall, but one-race Preakness or Belmont winners come up big in the Gold cup and the Breeders' Cup. Look for example on Street Sense and Curlin.

BB can race again if he wants to to prove all his critics wrong, but a horse that runs like that loves to run, belmont day he couldnt. Just because we dont know why doesnt mean we need to theorize conspiracy.
Big Brown did not lose this race. Kent Desormeaux and the trainer lost it for him. Reports on ESPN after the race said that BB was stressed and fractious after having his quarter crack sutured and 3 days stall rest and continued to be so. Kent did not realize that he had a different horse under him (temperament wise) and did not adapt. He yanked BB around and held him back for 3/4 of the race. Rating him so hard for so long, took everything out of this horse who should have, would have won.
I think the Triple Crown is cursed... Birdstone beats Smarty Jones? Big Brown craps out in the biggest race of his career? These things just don't happen under normal circumstances...
Why I am glad I lived during the 70's, no steroids as today and no complaints about heat. Basically no excuses. The greatest horses ever assmbled were in the 70's. Secretariat the greatest, Seattle Slew, Affirmed all TC winners. Ruffian,Foolish Pleasure,Spectacular Bid,Alydar, Sham,Northern Dancer,Riva Ridge,Forego to name a few. What a decade for horse racing
You are right about the steroid use, drugs in general, poor breeding, the list is endless. No hoof, no horse. There is a reason BB was only raced 6 times. He had everything to win and should have won this race had he been ridden properly. Having crappy feet was his weakness but, not his downfall. Racing should be terminated.
Today's horses, like today's men, are pussies. Maybe the answer is to make the Belmont 1 1/8 miles so we can have a modern triple crown winner. They've dumbed down everything else to be accomodating.
Although I would have like to had a triple crown winner...and like Big Brown as a horse, I think it's the horse who got the last laugh in showing he is the one who deserves any credit and he is the one in control. I hope his next race he isn't run on steroids, then we will know what kind of horse he really is. I think it's sickening these horses are given steroids in the first place. Im not 100% about this but when Desormeaux was playing bumper cars at start of the race..
I think Big Brown threw a shoe. He was going a mile and a half for the first time ever in 93dg

Big Brown was little more than the result of Rick Drugtows steroid and juiceman practices. He was loaded on steroids for the 1st 2 legs of the TC and Drugtow admitted he took him off of them for the Belmont. Drugtow has a confirmed 68 recorded medication violations in his career at 15 different tracks. The International Racing Commission has asked the NYRA to permanently ban him. They will likely not do it because they dont care about racings integrity any more LOL

You can always combine the Met Mile, the haskell and the travers to make a new Triplet Crown or whatever....A superhorse would be able to do it without excuses. that is all.

I think this race marked the 60 day point from the last time he was injected with steroids according to Dutrow. He never looked like the same horse after the Preakness. Struggled to beat Coal Play at Monmouth and barely won a Grade II in his last career race.

If the whip is used CORRECTLY,it causes NO DISCOMFORT to the horse. Actually the term whip is incorrect,it is not a whip,but rather a leather crop. It is used to signal a horse to give all it has. When trained correctly the horse will soon begin to wait for that signal. Many times the ears will be cocked back as if to say hey lets go! Some seem to forget that there are rules in place for jocks who use the "whip" excessively. If a jock is so hamhanded with a whip,well his license should be gone!

On the subject of using a "whip". First of all it is not a whip(like a bullwhip,etc.),it is a stick with a looped piece of leather at the tip, When used correctly,it DOES NOT cause pain and it is used to be a signal for more speed Second,there are rules in place that will discipline a jock if he uses the stick too much. If he raises his arm above his shoulder he can be suspended. The horse racing community(of which I belong) takes many steps to protect the horses. Many of you do not know this.

exactly! like a lot of horses are trained to listen to the whip.. for example- near the end of the race the jockey will give the horse a tap, so they know it's time to give it all they got. it doesnt hurt them, it gives them signals. and the jockeys stirrups are up so high they can't communicate with teir leg very well

if i'm being honest, i dont have a problem with the whip. it doesnt hurt them though. they have way thicker skin, and its like a pinch to encourage them. most jockeys who have a bit of experience know that some horses respond to it, some dont. those who arent in the know and who whip the crap out of their horses, they should be punished, and they are. ITS ALL ABOUT IMAGE, IT LOOKS WAY WORSE THAN IT IS.

He people, there is a picture out today that clearly shows the reason WHY Big Brown ran so badly ... his right hind shoe was hanging halfway off! The picture was taken by a free-lance photographer at about 200 yards into the race before they reached the first turn. That's the reason he ran so bad, so all you Big Brown Haters can just go take a hike. Tell you what you do, go put on a pair of cleats and then losen the cleats on one side and try running that way and you'll see why he quit.

Knowing about the shoe, I am glad we finally have a reason for the poor perfomance. But, I am still glad he didnt win, because for a horse to win the triple crown, it needs stamina and most of all, it needs heart to win. Big Brown obviously didnt have enough.

Can someone give me insight into why the horse community is so against a Triple Crown winner, besides the money involved? There's no doubt Da Tara deserves props for the wire to wire, but the time was rather pathetic. The whole thing stinks, watching the race over and over convinces me of that. KD NEVER let him go, he rode that bit right through the last turn and right to the point of pulling him up. There's no doubt BB is a great horse and will hopefully prove it in the near future...

From the first round of the Triple Crown,it was very obvious that Big Brown wasnt capable of enduring big running distances (above 1800mtrs).
moreover the horse doesnt want to start as head of the race.he wants to follow the rest of its competitors and then react,counter-attack and win the race.
kent shouldnt make the horse to face head to head the other horses from the start of the racing.
and one last thing i noticed:
the horse was running like he had drunk 10lts of water before the race..

If his bridle was too tight, why didn't he throw a fit warming up? Why didn't he throw a fit in the gate when the starter was holding his head sideways by the rein? If his bridle was too tight, it would have shown up long before he got to the gate.He threw his head around because he was rank...he had missed training and he was to sharp. He wins because he knows horses, he knew that BB would not be 100%, he knew he had the only speed horse in the race and that the Tiznow blood could carry the distance. Watch the pre-race intreview, and see his reaction when asked about BB's foot. As for Kent leaving the country..I guess Cal to NY might seem like a different country!

Lets not forget it was a hot as hell day. Like a marathon runner or even a nascar somethings just run better in different tempertures. It was to hot of a day for BB. He was winded I dont blame anyone. He did the right thing by holding him he would have killed him if he pushed him. Great recognizion by the jockey. Take the loss learn and build on it and race again.. Better that way than to kill him for what to try and please the crowd not worth it.

Sure seemed like Desormeaux missed a big hole at the start of the race and was forcing rankness, plus to keep him THAT WIDE or was Tale of Ekati keeping BB out there? Don't see why Des. didn't keep BB on the rail and let him run like he wanted to, instead he kept BB's head high and forced twice as much work out of him. But, I'm just an amateur fan and can't speak on a prof. standpoint, just seems like something wasn't right!

2 weeks before the race, BB has a 1/4 crack, 1week before the race, they announce that they are increasing the strength of the treatment for the abscess, and that they will put off repairing the crack. 5 days before the race they again put off the repair, 4 days before the race they put off the repair but decide to work the horse anyway.......AND ALL YOU GUYS CAN COME UP WITH IS FIX, FIX, FIX..Come on now, you are smarter than that aren't you??????

Okay people.. too straightnen this out, Brown is NOT a failure. He didn't win the Triple Crown, but he won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, young! He TRIED to race but he had a CRACKED HOOF, and they didn't even give him any steroids to help him. Plus, he kept on getting cut off. If you ask me Big Brown is NOT a faliure, he is a HERO.

the one good thing to come out of this is getting to see that fat arrogant schmuck rick dutrow fall flat on his face. But I do feel really bad for big brown and this only adds to the sadness of what happened to eight belles

I watched the race live and I couldn't believe it!!Something definitly was wrong for him not to give one of his explosive runs around the stretch,it's not like him.I found 7 possibilities why he didn't win:he broke from #1 spot,he possibly got kicked,he bumped into 2 horses,his cracked hoof,that he was off steroids,the heat,or it just wasn't his day.Even though there are very good reasons I'm still in shock!this is the only race he's lost,and he lost it by the same amount of lengths he wins by!

Big Brown showed the signs of a horse who either bled during the race,which he didn't. The other sign is that he just simply didn't handle the track. He is way too talented to just have NO KICK,otherwise. If he had been just a little tired he would have at least been able to make a bid for the lead,it is that simple.

I think Big Brown knew Da Tara was the one to beat and Kent didn't listen to his horse coming out of the gate but at the same time, I have to applaud Kent for pulling him up instead of trying to run him out which, if it didn't break him in body, would have broken him in spirit.
I'm sure the heat, the hoof crack and the messed up training all took the bloom off him - but temporarily.
Big Brown could certainly come back and trounce the field in the Breeder's Cup. He is still a great horse.

Seems kent found out on thing you "can't do whatever you want with this horse" as he had been chanting all week..He started to relax and when that horse came over in front of him he just ran off and tried to shoot the gap between the 2 horses...Why the big panic in the first 1/8 of a mile in a 1 1/2 race? The track was speed/rail favoring all day (like every big day) he should have really wrangled him back if he wasnt going for the lead....

kinda looks like BB wanted to go to the front in the begining and wasnt allowed so maybe he just decided to say fuck it and not go when asked..Maybe if he would have been allowed to run the front he may have done it but no one will ever know why he did what he did.

I totally agree with you redrumred2003. There was that one instance where it seemed like BB wanted to jump ahead and desormeaux sort of restrained the horse and from there on Desormeaux lost control of the horse. Screw job on BB's part, which I'm kinda relieved in saying so because clearly BB was game.

Paid off?? Jesus, either you have very little knowledge of thoroughbreds or you had a bet. They are animals. Big Brown won two very substandard classics, and is undoubtedly a very good horse, but we see such disappointments several times every season. Not the biggest surprise really was it?

I am from Australia and i dont understand why you would give up a cosy run behind the leader and travel 4 and 5 wide for the hole trip.A horse 3wide in the breeze wins probably 1 in 100 times here. Most jockeys here like to get the cosy run behind leader then start making a run on bend or the top of the straight.

I think it was a great ride of Kent. Not all jockeys would willingly give up a race like the Belmont. True, he said he had "no horse" beneath him, but still...to ease him up like that showed that he truly cared about the horse.
I really hope Big Brown will come again. It's funny how Derby winners never seem to fire in the fall, but one-race Preakness or Belmont winners come up big in the Gold cup and the Breeders' Cup. Look for example on Street Sense and Curlin.

CatzKr. I so agree with you. He had no horse. Why take the chance of "another" Barbaro OR Eight Belles? Brownie had a bad moment on the wrong day. That's all. Kent surly does not need money. He is very rich already. He did the right thing.

beefjerkey if he had he might have caused further injury, winstrol increases appetite, and hes been off it since april, "something" went wrong, and his jockey did the right thing, he said a million more dollars isnt worth BB's life, and pulled him up. BB can race again if he wants to to prove all his critics wrong, but a horse that runs like that loves to run, belmont day he couldnt. Just because we dont know why doesnt mean we need to theorize conspiracy.

Big Brown did not lose this race. Kent Desormeaux and the trainer lost it for him. Reports on ESPN after the race said that BB was stressed and fractious after having his quarter crack sutured and 3 days stall rest and continued to be so. Kent did not realize that he had a different horse under him (temperament wise) and did not adapt. He yanked BB around and held him back for 3/4 of the race. Rating him so hard for so long, took everything out of this horse who should have, would have won.

Why I am glad I lived during the 70's, no steroids as today and no complaints about heat. Basically no excuses. The greatest horses ever assmbled were in the 70's. Secretariat the greatest, Seattle Slew, Affirmed all TC winners. Ruffian,Foolish Pleasure,Spectacular Bid,Alydar, Sham,Northern Dancer,Riva Ridge,Forego to name a few. What a decade for horse racing

You are right about the steroid use, drugs in general, poor breeding, the list is endless. No hoof, no horse. There is a reason BB was only raced 6 times. He had everything to win and should have won this race had he been ridden properly. Having crappy feet was his weakness but, not his downfall. Racing should be terminated.

Today's horses, like today's men, are pussies. Maybe the answer is to make the Belmont 1 1/8 miles so we can have a modern triple crown winner. They've dumbed down everything else to be accomodating.

Although I would have like to had a triple crown winner...and like Big Brown as a horse, I think it's the horse who got the last laugh in showing he is the one who deserves any credit and he is the one in control. I hope his next race he isn't run on steroids, then we will know what kind of horse he really is. I think it's sickening these horses are given steroids in the first place. Drugs are being scrutinized and banned in other sports, they should be in horse racing--a horse owner.

i was so sad! whats wrong with big brown?!?! he woulnt just tire out like that. he did get bumped around a little bit, but he was in the perfect place untill his jockey asked him for the speed. and he totally fell apart!

the horse was 7 wide for the first 7 furlongs - going 1 1/2 miles. Kent D. screwed it up with Real Quiet, 10 years later he is back for more.

Well, now, with what happened here at Belmont, we know that Big Brown has more sense to take care of himself than those who run him. Steroids in horse racing should be banned, maybe we'd have fewer life ending injuries. john skalet
