They should re release the C64 again, but not in a Joystick and maybe have like an SD card loader and usb joystick interface, they could make it smaller and people could make new games for it, It could sell really cheap and bring back bedroom programing
@OfficialVGOvideos C64 had supperior sound to NES. NES could only do square, sawtoth , and noise. SID chip could do sawtooth, triangle, pulse, noise among a dozen other features the NES could only dream of. Thats not to say NES didn't have some bad-ass music made for it, but it's sound just wasn't a match to the SID chip.
Timeless technology. And just imagine ... if the C64 still does good today ... how much advanced was when launched. And don't forget that SID and VICII were developed in less than one year. Real engineering.
Hey Man, awesome work, love the C64! Possible upload of the song in .mp3 format? Or can anyone convert it from the the .sid file? I've got a Mac and can't convert sound file. Thanks In advance.
This is fantastic! Also a great reminder of how good the "noise" waveforms sounded (those drums are teh hawt) on the c-64. Looking forward to more of this kind of thing.
this is just great. I couldn't imagine that you were doing this on a REAL c64, I thought you worked this out with an emulator. But... wow, respect! That's really awesome! I truly adore your work <3
While I'm not sold on this type of game (I see more value in real guitar training rather than Simon-esque note/color matching), I think you've done a great job on this. I'm intrigued by the use and interpretation of programmed notes via SID files versus sampled clips. A version of this for Amiga that uses the similar MOD format would be great (MOD has such a great library of stereo songs like Guitar Slinger!).
well, this is a great project for the Commodore 64... but I totally agree with you about all of the Guitar Hero and Rockband FAKE guitar playing... it's very disappointing.
I lift my hat for you... I was basically brought up with C64 music... Rob Hubbard, Chris Hülsbeck, Ben Daglish etc where like gods to me... sometimes I go through some of their games on my own C64 just to listen to the music,
When I saw your project I was amazed... would be awsome to go threw the shreds in songs from for example last ninja 2...
This is a dream come true for an oldie like me who lived through childhood together with my beloved C64.... you deserve a medal for this :)
There are several free developing kits for multiple platforms which may follow nowadays standards.....tell me how many persons will actually have access to this game? Only a few...
I do support and entrust creativity to everyone, but when it comes to being both creative and retrogradous, one factor may clearly nulify the other.
If you think writing games for these older systems is easy with 'free developing kits,' in many cases you can forget it. Who cares who has access to it? Do you have a hobby? So what if this is his? I applaud him for learning how to pull this off, and if it's what he likes, who cares?
There are C64 emulator for the PC. However, I do not know whether you can connect a joystick to your PC (perhaps you need to have a USB to DB9 joystick convertor). Now that would be necessary to have the full experience.
I had Amiga 1200 and use it to make music with Protracker and AHX (tracker that produces exact SID sounds). I often watch MTV2 and I see that those chip sounds are coming back in today's alternative music and that's fucking great! Listen to the called 'Skeleton Boy' by Friendly Fires here on YT. :D
chiptune != sid tune, imo.. chiptunes exist basically for every platform, while sid tunes are specific for the c64. so, yes, a sid tune is a chiptune, but a chiptune is not necessarily a sid tune.
