When you join the national guard you can expect to get deployed these days, unlike the TEXAS state guard which you cannot be deployed overseas, but the catch is you have to buy your own gear and you do not get veteran benifits.

When the states started accepting 90% Federal funding for their National Guards costs and expenses, they allowed the National Guard Bureau to have final authority over their state's troops. That's what happens when you accept 'free" money from the government!

Ok, I myself, just about to enlist in the National Guard, am all for us pulling out of Iraq, BUT this guy doesn't know what he's talking about as far as the legality of the federalization of the Guard.

Also, one thing people should realize incidentally, is the Guard is the reason we don't have a draft. Just one of the results of the military being an all-volunteer force (no thanks to Code Pink blocking people from recruiting stations) as it became in 1973

The National Guard does not fall under the State alone, it is part of the United States Army (a federal force).

Just focus on arguing for drawing the troops down in Iraq, then changes will come. If you care about the troops, before worrying about the Guard worry about the Stop Loss Program, and the rather short rest time between deployments. As troops are drawn down, those will change, and then the NG units will deploy less and less.

Exactly, The Guard is part of the DOD. They can be used for federal purposes. And when they are, they always perform up to or exceeding the standards of their Active Duty counterparts.

The Guard is the main reason for not needing a draft.

He is wrong that there is no proper chain of command. There is a proper chain of command - the National Guard is a component of the DOD. They have been legally federalized. Bush was not the only President to use NG forces abroad. The NG has been inevery conflict, police action, and war that America has been involved in. This guy is a moron.

While it was not to the extent that we've used them today, National Guard units did serve in both Korea and Vietnam contrary to what some people mistakingly think.
