My favourite part when I practice Kata is when my Sensei explains the meaning of the moves. This is when most people stop just waving their hands and legs and begin to understand that Kata is a simulation of real fight and also the way to keep improving your technique.
could anybody tell me why some kata have these really slow movements in them ? i'm fairly new to karate ( about two years now ) and i really love kata, including the slow moves, but i'm just wondering why they're executed so slowly. After all isn't speed crucial in martial arts?
For Shotokan guys, this might be one of the most difficult katas because of the many "extraordinary" techniques generally not practised in Shotokan. Especially hangetsu.dachi, the slow tsuki combined with strong breathing, and of course the neko-ashi dachi with the seldom teisho awase uke at the end! In fact, throughout the kata there are complicated moves. Also a fact is, that it's VERY difficult to execute a fast technique after a slow powerful technique. But this kata teaches you that thing.
sanchin dachi and sochin dachi are different, sochin dachi is fudo dachi, hangetsu dachi is generally on used in hangetsu it is known as half moon stance or wide hour glass stance, whilst sanchin dachi is musch shorter and known as pigeon toed stance or narrow hour glass stance, hope this helps
been performing kata for 27 years , ex kugb and jka , ive always known it as hangetsu dach ! sochin dachi is different as performed in the kata sochin
kanazawa Sensei is nan inspiration to all people in the martail arts. i come from JKA but when i want to go and chech my kata i alwayds go to watch his performance. he is a true Sensei. Respect
Sensei Kanazawa IS THE MAN!!! i was on his course no 2 long ago he's truely amazing....his son is SO good! It's strange 2 think he can probably kill u wi a one finger blow! ha HUD THAT!!
ive been to a coarse with Kawanaza and Hazard was better well hazard also grew up on the wrong side of london and lived a life when he was a kid collecting money for the mofia and when he was lik 50ish a guy was hitting his bumper and he got out of a car and kick the dud in the face the guy was a policeman and he was wearing a police bike helmet his side thrust kick was so strong it broke through and knocked him out honestly thats on a lil bit. Hazard isway better then kawanaza no effence to him
While i am in no position to criticise sensei kanazawa, i was led to believe that the introductory movements, while slow, precise and full of dynamic tension were meant to be more flowing without the pauses that are displayed.
i agree with you, but i think the pauses here are to show the waza, or the application of a technique. as soon as i figure out specifically what that is, i wil let you know, lol
it is also called hourglass stance, my style calls it pigeon stance for some reason, the key to startin an finishin i guess is to check you are where you started after the third hooking block to double punch.
this particular kata focuses on strength and breathing. what you probably can't see as a non-karateka is the tension in his body as he moves, and the focus on his breathing. Hangetsu is a very very very difficult and tiring kata to perform properly. you have to maintain the strength in all parts of your body as you move and breath, especially through the first three steps.
Every kata is different and has a distinct rhythm and feeling. Some are strong and powerfull whilst others are fast and agile. Slow movements often represent powerful throws where breathing is very important.
Yea, the idea is you want to get through the movement as quick as possible, like a punch. The execution and movement must be completed all the way through which is where the pause comes in. At least that is my understanding of it.
Perfect for a breathing exercise

Er.....
sanchin-dachi is not the same as hangetsu-dachi(its much narrower)
But sochin-dachi IS the same as FUDO-dachi.

Man that was good. Hangetsu is a hard Kata mainly because of Hangetsudachi stance its self. I'm really having trouble with it.
Shotokanwar 4 years ago
same here, its really awkward to start and finish at the same point. its like a cross between kiba dachi and sanchin dachi.
Renzolionheart 3 years ago
I've heard my sensei call it "hourglass" stance. You have to put a lot of pressure on the inside of your thighs while keeping your knees aimed in.
