Operation Market Garden, in a way did fail in certain locations but gained in other locations. The allies were hoping the German military was weak enough to end the war by the end of 1944. The germans did surprise the allies in certain battles and their armor. the war in Europe could had extended into late 1945 instead of May 1945.

@veederm the british fought very well. It was a highly weakened ss II corps. They had tanks but most needed refit after their flogging at normandy. Tanks in general aren't suited to urban situations which where most of the combat took place. German morale, ammunition and fuel was also low and the british had full air support, so l don't think it was as one-sided as u seem to think.

She told me they were always very nice to her, since she was only a little girl. Also she said that during the hunger crisis in the 44 - 45 winter, they stole some extra food for her family from their CO's quarters, because they thought she was getting sick.

The funny thing about Operation Market Garden is the intelligence that the Germans sound in one of the gliders, showing them the full battleplan of the enemy! That is one of the keys of their victory .. NOW think about that, because the Allied had broken the Enigma code long before that, which meant that they always knew when and where the Germans would attack, giving them a huge edge even before the battle had started.

Imagen if the Germans had the same kind if intelligence, they might had won

@Draious But both sides did it. And later on the recon planes were way up there, with pressurized cabins. Even if you got one on radar I imagine even if you had a fighter with a pressurized cockpit ready to go, it would take a while to climb to the same altitude.

The Allies took it much more seriously, and it paid off. One example is the defeat of the Italian navy. It was a first-class navy, but did virtually no air recon, while the Allies knew where the Italians were every step of the way.

The German SS Divisions had begun as volunteer units of an "Aryan" nature. As the war progressed and more units were created the troops were draftees with the SS getting first choice.They were larger and received better equipment than Wermacht divisions. They were more mechanized then even Panzer and Panzer grenadier Division.Normal Wermacht divisions relayed on mainly horse es for transport. SS Divisions had their own trucks. The closest Allied equivalent may be the Russian Guards Divisions.

All the comments about diverting divisions to the East are academic at best. The demarcation lines for post-war occupation were all worked out at the Yalta Conference. If the Americans and Brits had occupied more of Europe at the time of the German surrender, they would have merely handed it over to the Sovs as per the agreement.

Get the book "A Bridge too Far" by Cornelius Ryan and you will understand what happened in this battle. Ryan interviewed allied and German commanders in the 60's and many eye witnesses who participated in the battle. Long story short, the allies overextended themselves by trying to capture too many bridges.
