  • that will then be your fraction put on side and put you total number minused

must be lower than you denominator if so youl get an awnser watch

    6

    - = 1 1

5 - 5 do you understand what i just did? I SMART BABY!

  • HERES WHAT I LEARNED IN CLASS TODAY (im teachers pet o.o)

If you need a lesson on this listen

if you have a improper fraction to make it accurate divide i bet you cant divide it right so take that number how many times can you fit that number into your numerater? anyways take that number of how many times you can fit it in and put it on the top of your division house then times that (the number on the roof and the denominater) then minus that with your numerator

    continued im only nine...

  • i think sometimes i talk fast lol

  • FUCK I WISH I HAD MY GRADE 12 DIPLOMA

  • I wanted to say thank you for a very well presented demonstration of a mathematical fundamental. I was given a task to help my son with homework and honestly needed help myself. We both were able to build confidence with the help of your video and my son is now chillin'.

  • When I was a kid, my Dad was helping me with my homework and I remember getting pretty upset, because I didn't understand why borrowing works. I really wanted to know why and he couldn't tell me. I think it is important for kids to know why something works and not just how. I wasone of those kids that NEEDED to know.

  • You

  • Hey im trying to teach my friend how to do these but its hard to explain that in 1/12 the 12 = a whole or 1.

  • thank u u help a lot

  • Khan I appreciate your time in helping us people learn or refresh these simple concepts back in our heads.

  • he is confusing me

  • @payagaiden09 I was confused at first but I think I understand it now. When you add two fractions where the denominators(the bottom numbers) are different you have to try and make them the same.He is using multiplication(thats times tables)and divison. So when he says 1/2 is the same as 2/4s he just timesd both of them by 2.You could do it with any fraction as long as the top and bottom go into the number.so say 6/12 so you pick a number 6 and 12 go into so say 3 so 3x6=18 and 3X12=36 so 18/36 is.

  • @payagaiden09 the same as 6/12.

  • I learned today.

  • THANK YOU VERY MUCH THAT WAS SOOO HELPFUL! :))

  • IMPOSSIBLE

  • 6:10 AND 1

  • I am so Grateful for this~! My final is in a few hours, thank you so much!

  • I am in 11 th grade and I have forgotten all this, I feel stupid

  • I am 32 and I didnt understand anything

  • I'm 14, 8th grade.. home schooled. SUPER behind on my math. I started this school year with adding and subtracting, I'm already at fractions<3 my self-esteem is rising. and I'm proud of it. I'm going to get where "I need to be" and I'm gonna do whatever the hell i can to get there (as long as i do it right) this was really easy to understand. Thanks!

  • Haha this is cool it helped me alot !! U should do more videos :D

  • in 53 seconds i learned more with a guy drawing than in 1 hour and 35 minutes of my teacher talking about pie ratios. no wonder im failing

  • cool i like fractions now

  • cool i like fractions now

  • the dislike bar is the devils penis

  • thanks you helped me understand this! im definitly subbing

  • wtf so lost ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

  • What do u call that light pen technology, Sal? Very nice illustrations! Fraction equivalency is so important re LCD's; similarly, in chemistry re: conversion factors. It requires some of us at least a fraction of time to learn fractions!

  • DARN FRACTIONS! HOW DO THEY WORK???!!!! xD

  • haha most of you are obviously in the 5th-7th grade, if you are watching this.

  • @Pondebong what does that have to do with annything? your obviously a mindless idoit to say something that has nothing to do with the current topic.....

  • @Pondebong haha you're a tool.

  • @Pondebong why does a 4th grader have a youtube?SAL IS AWSOME!

  • @Pondebong haha wrong, im an 8th grader :P

  • i want pizza

  • 24 people are too retarded to get it

  • uh the pain it burns i hate math zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • Man adding and substracting fracs is a pain!!!!

  • hate fucking fraction's

  • I learn More Here Than At School

  • @haleyveloz y are u watching it then retard

  • Thank you :)

  • when you say pie do u mean 3.14 or actual pie?

  • @waterbottle421

    An actual pie. :)

  • thanks man i needed a touch up

  • wow this is soo easy im in 7t grade not kindergarten thanks but no thanks

  • my mom taught me a very simple way to do this. Cross multiply the numbers diagonally and then d denominators. Add or subtract if needed. Ex 1/4 - 2/3. 8-3 12 =5/12

  • i want pie now

  • You sound like Cry... He is awesome!

  • that made me learn alot and better in school thank you so much i needed it

  • 16/13 people cant use fractions

  • i prefer video than school :D

  • FUCK FRACTIONS

  • @khanacademy can you please teach me US math in 8th grade with division and word problems please? I'm watching all your videos trying to figure out math... I've always had a hard time with it and I have a small case of ADHD please:)

  • why can't you be my math teacher!!!!!!

  • if you became my math teacher , i will get A for my mathematics

  • 22 people should give up.

  • @710418oo ha your comment got me laughing!!!

  • I LOVE Khan Academy. I am secondary ed math teacher, but many of my students do not understand elementary concepts, such as fractions. It is nice to watch your videos to get back to the basics of HOW those concepts should be taught. I've also considered using your videos when I am unable to be in class.

  • I understand this but here is my problem. 1/4+5/8+7/10=1.575 like htf did they get tht.

  • This guy has a sexy voice!

  • 22 people are retarded.

  • Appreciate this video very much!!!! THANKS

  • Why the heck are there DISLIKES on the video? It's freaking PERFECT!!!

  • 22 people cant do fractions

  • @2011Identity First of all... no need for name calling. I did not call you anything, it is not my fault that you are not intelligent, I am just trying to help you. Second, you still said "there for" instead of "therefore". Third, when you follow the word "a" with a vowel, you are supposed to use "an", not "a". And lastly, God is normally capitalized. (You should probably work on your punctuation as well, btw). My point is, don't be a jerk.

  • @2011Identity I hope you are joking. You do realiZe that you not only spelled "realiZe" incorrectly but you also said "there for" instead of therefore... right?

  • 22 people are dumb and didn't understand ...and their also gay !

  • Wow! This makes it sound so easy!

  • wtf im so stupid

  • way better than mr. duey!!

  • @2011Identity You realize khanacademy is a worldwide school where someone who is not as privileged as you could possibly have no English writing background right?

  • 1/4+1/4=2/8=1/4

  • @The695612 Umm are you trying to be funny? Because 1/4 + 1/4 is not 2/8 its 2/4, its a common denominator.

  • Is it just me or is his voice REALLY soft....This is way better than the teachers that sound like they are reading right out of a text book..I found myself answering the question before you did...I have never done that with fractions.I HATE fractions,Cause i never knew how to do them correctly someone just habded me a paper with fractions on them and said learn...

  • You are FANTASTIC, thank you for posting,

  • thanks alot i got end of year tests in 4days and this is helping alot

  • how did u do u get there on the computer

  • awesome. thank you thank you thank you

  • @rawryshnap

I Do It This Way So I'll Show You But If It Confuses You Because You Never Did It This Way Than I'm Sorry...Hope It Helps :)

Find The Least Common Multiple Which is 12

So.You Write 12 As The Denominator..And You Find How Many Times Does 6 Go On 12 Which is 2 so You Take 2 and Multiply It With 1 (2x1) Which is 2 so you Write it like this 2+?/12

Then you Find Out How Many Times Does 12 Go On 12 which Is 1 So Multiply That With 11 and You Write..2+11/12 and You Get..13/12

  • hey why don't you make a youtube vid on adding mixed numbers and subtracting mixed numbers huh

  • Wow. I've spent the best part of a week trying to iece together how you equalise frations from the dubious instructions i've gotten from a revision book. All i had to do was come on here and just listen to someone just explain it all.

  • If only teachers had YouTube accounts... then the world shall learn...

  • @DavaoCityLiving but then they would be like to you hey add me and subscribe and blah blah this and blah blah this but i am glad the khan is here

  • OMG THANK YOU I GOT 0 OUT OF 10 ON A QUIZ XC BUT THIS REALLY HLEPED THANK YOU lets see what i get on the test tommorow

  • im in college now, and i need to review my math for my placement test. this is good video

  • @1BloodyRoar1 just wondering but how the hell does this help i mean this is like 5th grade stuff

  • @TheXstar23 exactly for that reason. i wouldnt count on 8 year old memory for my placement test cuz then i'd have to take this "5th grade stuff" all over again in the 101 class. reviewing it for 10 minutes on you tube is better than wasting an entire semester.

  • @TheXstar23 IF you dont know.. or need to remember how to add subtract fractions.. this is alot more clear and said, than other places.. AKA school -.-

  • ...and this is the pie. we take 1/4th of the pie, and add 1/4th to the pie.....for the sake of theory, lets say its a cherry cobbler. now you see, cherry cobbler is the exception to many rules......

  • This is great but i dont understand how to do the same nominater number ( under )

  • wow this helped me!!!

  • All this pie talk is making me hungry.

  • You are awesome. Way better than my teacher.

  • @gojeffgo1 yes teachers are alot painful they think they know everything i learn better on youtube and home shcool

  • Absolutely beautiful. I'm 30 years old and I finally get it. Thank you!

  • that really helped me. My teachers suck

  • Thx man have a test and checking to see all the steps agian

  • thanks really helpfull

  • if only he was my teacher then id ace it

  • why go to school when you got youtube

  • Comment removed

  • The last one is soo confusing can you make another video about it? I think its not that confusing for the others but me hehe ^^

  • like this

  • Well instead of drawing the whole picture y not just add the numerators if the denominators the same. when u add numerator leave denominator the same. No use of drawing a picture and stuff. It takes more time!!!

  • SO MUCH PIE. if you eat too much pie you'll become overweight!

  • i hate education

  • Got it! I'm trying to refresh my memory on these old math techniques as I am preparing for the GMAT. Thanks! Really good tutorial.

  • my teacher cant teach for shit, this actually helps.

  • @wwe1580 same here i go through class and not know a damn thing my teacher say til i here from this guy

  • skip to 3:08 for unlike denominators

  • i thought when u get a common denomenators u just bring over the original numerators and just add them.. Kind of confused

  • im confused :(

  • @faznazraz1

Watch it again, and follow the exercises that he's doing, you'll get it. =)

  • im back in school after 26 years and when i was in school i never could understand fraction no ant way. but knowim getting it. thanks for the tutorials

  • getting fat on pie

  • why is school so hard and you tube so easy i wish everyone had there own laptop at school to go on you tube and learn.

  • I learn better on Youtube than regualr school

  • @Michelleissoawesome So do I. Thumbs up

  • Thank you That Realy Helps

  • THANK'S FOR THIS VIDEO,THIS IS REALLY GOOD FOR SOMEONE JUST TRYING TO HELP OTHERS.!USED THIS VIDEO TO HELP MY KID.THANKS AGAIN!

  • I am 31 yrs old. I have never been able to understand math untill I came across your videos. Now I understand, it's not the student,.. its the teacher. Some people can really do math.. it doesn't mean they can teach it. Thank you for not confusing me with shortcuts that "untalented" math teachers think its such a good idea to teach. :)

  • @Sagatiaej i agree with you!

  • My child thanks to you, is the best in math in her class now. All because i got her to watch these when she was 8

  • thanks

  • I can't find any videos for subtracting whole numbers from mixed fractions.

i.e 4 subtract 1 3/10. Can somebody please help describe how to work this problem out?

  • One fourth...sounds so odd. One quarter!

    Thanks for the video!

  • My entire life depended on this test that I aced because of this video... SCORE!!!!

  • Come to my school plz.my math teach just flaps his jaws about stuff i already know!!

  • thx mai . but the ques was y was 1 made into 10/10 and not 1/10?
