I listened to his narrative, but there is not much in it that is not totally obvious and known to academics (at least) and also in the general culture, before he wrote his book. @massoumondini well in China's case it was more to do with political reasons, since the Ming Dynasty Chinese did have a large expeditionary fleet, but halted it due to economic costs, and because the 1600's the Ming dynasty was replaced with the Qing dynasty which was much more resilient to change

@SD78 - and the wagons were circled in such a way to create a basic fortified perimeter. You couldn't have isolated wagons because of the perimeter formed. You had to attack the fortification, or perimeter as a whole. This is nearly a perfect makeshift perimeter, because there really is no flank, no front no rear, and allows for maximum mobility for defense forces. The zulus didn't have much when it came to long distance weaponry, as the spear was the longest distance weapon they had.

Wheat grows on a far wider area, extending from Canada across Europe & North Africa through South Asia to northern China and Australia then back round to the Southern Cone of Latin America. Rice needs the right climate (like wheat) and irrigation conditions to reach the yields that make it a miracle crop, and those simply aren't available anywhere. But then they're all miracle crops. And they're geographically-conditioned resources, in line with Diamond's argument.

I do not understand why this guy became famous. I listened to his narrative, but there is not much in it that is not totally obvious and known to academics (at least) and also in the general culture, before he wrote his book. Even this idea of same parallel having the same climate is such a simplistic prism that I am sure stuff like this was written in the history books of the 19th century when talk of climate influencing the "character" of a nation was rife.

@SD78 - and the wagons were circled in such a way to create a basic fortified perimeter. You couldn't have isolated wagons because of the perimeter formed. You had to attack the fortification, or perimeter as a whole. This is nearly a perfect makeshift perimeter, because there really is no flank, no front no rear, and allows for maximum mobility for defense forces. The zulus didn't have much when it came to long distance weaponry, as the spear was the longest distance weapon they had.

Wheat grows on a far wider area, extending from Canada across Europe & North Africa through South Asia to northern China and Australia then back round to the Southern Cone of Latin America. Rice needs the right climate (like wheat) and irrigation conditions to reach the yields that make it a miracle crop, and those simply aren't available anywhere. But then they're all miracle crops. And they're geographically-conditioned resources, in line with Diamond's argument.

I think they grew yams and other minor crops. But you are correct, no "advanced agriculture"; there was little in the way of irrigation, plowing, etc.

Africans had tropical agriculture, advanced enough to support 100m people; Europeans had temperate-zone agriculture suited to the south and the interior plateau but not to the Tropics. Two environments, two agricultures: neither managed to master the other's.

Age of Empires III has made me hate warfare, it was an unexpected side effect of the game; people talk about "glory" and "cunning" and "tactical artistry" when, what it comes down to, is a race to see who can make the most lead fly the fastest and in the most organized manner. Whoever can make the biggest storm of bullets and cannon fire, wins; there is no "art" or "tactics" to it at all.

100 years ago half a million whites populated an area of southern Africa almost half the size of the USA.Why would they want to go any farther north in Africa when they had more than enough land for them selfs .They were also building a first world country (for whites)called South Africa ..No need to suffer in deep dark Africa when you had a safe secure rich life in Southern Africa .. The Metabele land was turned into a country called Rhodesia known as the bread-basket of Africa because of all the surplus food the white farmers were able to grow in the tropical climate.. My coutry has great work ethics and progress has been very good.
Work ethics are good partly because even if we are a welfare nation having a job is much better than not.
Other reason is that people don't respect slackers.
But now things aren't that good... guess why and because of who.
