Hated it when I was 4. Hate it today. When I was 4 I didn't like it because I kept feeling terrible for Rainbow Fish- he was left with only ONE of his precious scales (what made him unique) after being forced to give them to a bunch of rude, bullying fish who didn't even deserve them. I remember being really upset about it and asking my Mom "In the next book does he get his scales back?" over and over. 12 years later and I'm still waiting for that to happen.
This brings back such great memories. My mom, little brother and I used to make rainbow fish out of construction paper, watercolor & cotton & put glitter all over it.
This is complete horse manure!!!! yeah let's teach little kids that socialism is ok....hey the rich have nice cars and houses and jets.... I want that too but i don't want to work hard for it so just GIVE it to me. That's going to raise a generation of bums who eventually will just sit back and expect the few people who have made something of themselves to equally distribute their wealth....OUTRAGEOUS!!!! This story and similar messages should be banned from reaching any kid's ears.
lol!!! I remember the pictures, and the begigng of the book but i dont think i ever read it all the way through, i just stared at the bueatiful rainbow fish. The copy I had as a child came with cards to play 'go fish' I loved that book!!
What a depressing story. Telling kids that it's not OK to be special or different, and that they should feel guilty for being blessed with something that others may be envious of.
@Libbee30680 i agree, im 19 and i remember being read this book multiple times in grade school by my liberal teachers. This is textbook socialism. Notice How after he gives one scale away, everyone else wants a handout.
Watch this blazed. It's about the government taking control of the society. They spread media to make the fish think hes unhappy and then he willing puts himself into prison. Then at the end of the story he wakes up and asks, "Damn, where did all my clothes go? Why does my ass hurt?"
mannn those fish were just jealous. F***ing J*ck*sses. Be friends with him, what just cause he looks better than you he HAS 2 Give you some scales?!? Please!!! Why give away all YOUR SCALES!?! Now no one looks good. Everyones ugly. So he had to take away his beauty just 2 be accepted. Some Fake friends if you ask me. Heh, look at me getting all worked up over a video made on an old childrens book. Look Boys and Girls Sharing is cool, but separate sharing from jealously. Depressing A** book. smh
I read this book when I was in the first grade and even though everyone loved it I hated it. The pictures are great but I kept thinking, "How is he still special if he gave away all his scales. And why didn't they accept him and just be happy the way they were." My daughter is just like me but smarter than I was at her age (4) so I think she will have the same reaction. I curious to see what she thinks of it.
no. it's about how those who are talented or special (or beautiful) waste their gifts if they do not share themselves with others. They also will experience no true joy or belonging, unless they are generous with those who have less. It's about the burden of responsibility. A lesson everyone should learn, since everyone has something valuable to offer at some point or another.
@msleahkeene Maybe I suck but since it wasn't a talent or something like money or food or something it didn't feel that way. He was born with the scales and the scales were who he was. That's like Halle Barry having to dress bad and down play her looks to make everyone else feel better about themselves. I'm just sayin...
I've loved this story since I was a kid and now I read it to my baby. I don't think it's about losing you identity at all though, at first it bothered me that rainbow fish was going to give away his scales and then I got the message. If you hold on to your possesions and you think that's all you need you wont ever be truly happy, because things can't make you happy. But if you can learn to give and to share what you have with those less fortunate happiness will be all around you.
@DebraMabe1 that fish got jumbed! they took his scales just like they take your milk money or your new shoes. and what happened when the fish had no more scales?! they no longer paid attention to it.
I think in a way it's saying you have to give up your unique identity in order to be accepted by society, in another way it's saying that it's good to share and be kind to others. I don't really care what the book is about or what it's promoting, I like it anyway. It brings back a lot of good memories as a kid. I used to love looking at the fishes glittery scales all day long.
If it was promoting comunism then the octopus would have forced the fish to give away his scales, instead the fish sought advice, and the octopus gave him some. It was up to the octopus to follow the advice, and he did and it made him happy.
Listening to a story read to you has a more powerful effect on your imagination than having background music or background images. When you bring in music, video, and images to support your story then you are entering the world of FILM. This production is excellent but it is not PURE story telling where you have ONLY the spoken word.
Actually, I am taking a children's literature class and my textbook "Children's Literature: Discovery for a lifetime" says, "Children's Literature today includes media such as movies based on children's books and books that are based on popular movies." Films do tell stories. The children did a great job telling this story. The music and different voices added to it. Thank you Mr. Bennett for sharing this.
If you didn't have this book as a child, your parents didn't love you.

We had a tape to play it in the car and a little book and I loved listening to it and looking at the shiny scales <3

So the moral of the story is that you have to buy your friends? No thanks, I'll stick with "The Little Red Hen"
