That's not right, my Mac Mini w/ stock 5400RPM HDD boots up in like 10-15 seconds, so then why is the stock HDD MacBook Pro taking so long to boot up? Not trying to say this test is rigged and it's evident the SSD is blazingly fast, but is there a a reason why the MacBook Pro took so long to boot up? I just have a feeling it could have been faster. Just curious. And how much memory did each laptop have?
@FeeLtheHertZ Each had the minimum amount of memory as offered by Apple. Additionally, each machine is setup pre-boot to automatically launch five programs within Adobe's Creative Suite 4, which utilizes a good portion of the memory at startup. If we maxed the memory in both machines, the total boot times would be quicker. When a machine "runs out" of memory it uses the hard drive itself as a temporary memory location - thus showing the drastic change in boot time seen here.
@OWCmacsales Yeah, makes sense and that was quite a concise answer, appreciated. These SSD's you guys have look really good, are you planning to make any SATA III versions or are they already available?
@andreipetunin Installing a solid state drive is no different than installing any other hard disk drive. We have several videos available showing how to install a drive into most Mac computers produced in the last 10 years. Check out our channel to find the right video for your machine.
Hi, is the ''Mercury Extreme" the same drive as the "Mercury Extreme Pro" ? Is there a difference? I know there is the RAiD and Non-RAID edition, but is there also an non-PRO edition?
@Chrisabled When our original SSD was released, it was the Mercury Extreme SSD. Once the new RE edition was introduced, with new firmware for both the RE and non-RE versions, the "Pro" was added to the naming convention of both models.
So the performance on read/write speeds remain the same until the hardware fails? Does this also apply when used in RAID 0 on your Pro RE line of SSDs on both windows and mac?
Can you tell me why do you have reduced over-provisioning space of the ssd drive from 28% to 7% in the new ssd lineup of 2010? Is it any special care that i have to take if i want to use this drives with mac os 10.6? Thanx!

@gonzaload87 We currently carry two lines of the OWC Extreme SSD Models. The Pro and the Pro RE. The Pro has the 7% over provisioning which yields a larger usable disk size and works great in single or multiple drive configurations - like use as a boot or scratch disk. The Pro RE drives have the 28% over-provisioning for enterprise-use or RAID configurations. It wasn't a change as much as an expansion of the line. Both work great in Mac OS 10.6 with no special care required.
@OWCmacsales thx for the answer, can you finally tell me how much usable space can i see and use when i plug in the computer for a 240 gb OWC Mercury Extreme SSD ?

@OWCmacsales@OWCmacsales thx for the answer, can you finally tell me how much usable space can i see and use when i plug in the computer for a 240 gb OWC Mercury Extreme SSD ?
@gonzaload87 It depends on the OS and how much space it takes up in formatting, but the flash memory components on that drive total 256GB. 16GB is allocated to real-time data redundancy and error-correction leaving the remaining 240GB as usable space. Yes, TRIM is supported under Windows 7.
@OWCmacsales@OWCmacsales One more question and i will not more bother you, how much free space do i have if i buy the 240gb version? This drive supports TRIM?
@tharealdi79 Installation for an SSD is exactly the same for any other 2.5" hard drive. Check our channel, as we do have installation videos for many different computers and enclosures.
@tharealdi79 Ordinary SSDs offer fast read/write performance during first initial uses, but then experience significant write speed degradation over repeated usage. Independent simulation tests by Mac performance experts (search macperformanceguide) confirm the OWC Mercury Extreme Pro SSD’s ultra-efficient Block Management & Wear Leveling technologies are able to eliminate virtually any reduction in data transfer speeds over heavy long term usage of the drive.
Great video and super fast SSD. I've considered getting an SSD and MCE Optibay with a 640GB drive. I want to use the SSD for photo and video editing. What do you think?
@T4ShowVideos You can't beat the speed if it's a heavy duty app...if you're currently waiting for things to load, render, transfer, etc. this is the ticket to the fast lane.
Mine boots in 19 seconds

its funny how computers are so bottlenecked now so much processing power yet 99.9% of people are held back by there hdd

... and the one without the "pro" is not sold anymore?
If I buy a used Mercury Extreme without the "Pro", can make it to a "Pro" by updating the firmware?
Cheers,

@lizardc2 Neither. Its the OWC Mercury Extreme Enterprise Class SSD. See more info for purchase details.
