I had the privilege of meeting Victor Petrenko in the 90's when he was attending the US National Championships. I registered him and when it was time to take the credentials photo, he asked me if he should "smile big or little" in slightly broken English. Victor was charming and very polite - A CHAMPION OFF THE ICE AS WELL AS ON. And, of course, he was a THRILL to watch on the ice with his flowing style and plenty of power. BEST WISHES AND THANK YOU VICTOR WHEREVER YOU ARE!!
ABC's coverage that year sucked - once the Brians had skated and ABC knew who had the gold they didn't care about the rest of the skaters at all. The bronze was still undecided at this point, there was no reason not to show all of the remaining programs in full.
He is still one of my favorite skaters. I too will say that the current generation of skaters needs to study Petrenko, Browning, Boitano & co. Viktor was such a joy to watch, I miss seeing him skate. Such power, effortlessness, artistry, deliberate, not a move is wasted.
Great performance. I also love how the commentator at 1:39 goes "if we have to hazard a guess to the next olympics ... Petrenko for the USSR," but the next olympics was 1992, after the USSR fell apart!
One of the very best free skates ever in terms of artistry -- and the jumps were excellent as well. the current generation needs to study this: solid jumps, the most beautiful landings, musicality, artistry. nothing looks arbitrary and half-hearted, and it all looks so easy...
THe program that is shown starts after the first section. I know it will probably be difficult to find it because it was so long ago and the ABC broadcast is what is most available right know. But I would love to have seen the program from the very Beginning to the end.

A GORGEOUS skater w/ maturity (even at 18)! I LOVED watching him (almost as much as Boitano)!

He's so hot!!! And I love his jumps; like everyone said here, they look so easy, and very uplifting. He's a brilliant skater for sure.

Does anyone have the whole free program from this competition?

What do you mean by the whole free program? Are you looking for something in particular?

This is only about 3:30 of his Olympic program; we miss a glorious triple axel at the beginning.
