Yes it is technically illegal though some should fight DMCA which is the act that makes it illegal to copy dvds that have CSS copyright protection. I eventually think it won't be an issue in the future when all media pretty much goes to pure digital. People who copy and share don't care its illegal and are going to do it anyway.

Actually, it is illegal to RIP a DVD. No ifs, ands, or buts. That's the big controversy.

It is ILLEGAL to take any DVD and make a copy of it. PERIOD. Doesn't matter if you own it or not, where it's going, or how long you keep the copy. It's illegal.

This is why the iTunes store exists, you can download a digital copy legally for your iPod. Ripping a DVD is completely Illegal.

Do I agree with that law? NO. But that is the law. I believe in "fair use". The MPAA does not.

actually it do depend on what nation you reside in.

in Norway it IS legal to make safaty copies of your software as long as you have a license for it.

Of course that is likely to change real soon with the pressure laid on us by the European Union.
