This song was written by Upsetters musician Glen Adams. The lyrics were inspired by a local tale of a duppy who was supposedly seen speeding around on a three-wheeled coffin with two "John Crows" (buzzards) on top, one of which would ask for "Mr. Brown". Glen was due to record it himself but Perry suggested that the Wailers record it. Peter Tosh & Glen added spooky organ riffs Glen regularly introduced this song at his gigs saying "I wrote this song for Bob Marley". Glen died in Dec. 2010 - RIP.
Always been my favorite Wailers tune. It just captures the attitude of the time in Jamaica. Love that crazy sound whatever is is and the grinding organ.
@MrGoosemoore Please do some homework before trying to pass off notions as fact, this song has nothing to do with heroin. It's about a coffin that was said to be floating in mid-air down the street in Kingston, an event that was covered in their local newspaper in 1970.
Only Lee Perry was capable of creating such sounds. This is a couple of years before Bob Marley's breakthrough in the Western World but the Lee Perry sessions were among his best.
This is the only stereo made song, from the original Soul Revolution album. Song is an idea of Lee Perry. I guess the vampire, one hears is Lee Perry.
Actually the laughing sound at the start was done by Bunny Wailer. In fact, the lyrics were written by Glen Adams and Scratch Perry, but after voicing a version with Glen Adams on the "Duppy Conqueror " riddim, Scratch decided to have the Wailers voice in on this riddim.
