Centurion tank walkaround

For what reason did the Post War British tanks like the Centurion & Chieftain tanks keep adopt the less protected external suspension system instead of the torsion bar type? The top speed of only 22 miles would be as slow as the German Elephant! Could this tank tranverse itself by making a couple with its tracks or just U-turn? Why did the British tanks adopt the Browning 0.303 instead of 0.5 machine gun on turret top?
