Secondly, even if you help free one prisoner, stop one execution or help prevent just one forced eviction, you know it was worth the effort. I've been an Amnesty activist for many years now and I know what all those supporters do worldwide is so important to many individuals. And letters, as well as appeals, have been known to succeed.

actually that's the whole point. i'm ashamed to say i'm yet to write any letters, even though i'm a member of amnesty,  but change can be brought about by international pressure from individuals like you or me- raising awareness through letter writing (amnesty gives you the addresses of govermnent officials), donating money and generally raising awareness. the point is when individual ordinary people collaborate, great positive changes can be made. it's the only way change has ever occurred
