  • Ian Smith was a man who had the courage of his convictions. And an awful lot of insight.

  • The fact that there was not one black person at this memorial is representative of why Smith ideologies and Government failed its people. You live in Africa, you call yourself an African...yet you alienate 95% of the population based only on the colour of their skin. No wonder Rhodesia failed and Zimbabwe is such a mess. Smith planted the seeds of segregation and hatred....everyone is suffering the consequences!

  • @MrZingy

Did rhodesians commit genocides on a yearly basis, take a look at sudan, south africa, rwanda. Every single african country suffers fro abnormally high level of murder, discrimination SEGREGATION, hatred of gays etc. While under white rule these werent huge problems, oh yeah, white south africans discriminated the poor blacks by putting them to a different toilet, is that seriously more worse than the rwandan genocide what happened on the same year as apartheid stopped?

  • @TheHabati ...why to you reduce yourself to having to choose between lesser evils. Do the honourable thing and shout down oppression whoever perpetuates its. Ian Douglas Smith is responsible for the systematic destruction of the moral fibre of an entire country. No matter how many people were killed in Rwanda, you will never escape this fact!

  • @MrZingy

You cant escape my facts either.

  • @TheHabati difference being is that I am not trying to defend any of the atrocities.....whereas you are! That's for you and your conscience to deal with!

  • @MrZingy

With your last post you're defending different problems as I am, but why cant you properly give counter-arguments on the genocides in rwanda etc. but just say "no matter how many people were killed in Rwanda, you will never escape this fact!", oh well its rather understandable that you cant argue with racistsouthafricantoilet comments against genocides committed by blacks.

  • @MrZingy

systematic destruction of the moral fibre of an entire country<--- Oh let's see, during ian smiths time Rhodesia was rich country were blacks were more safe than in any other african country, they had jobs, education, but now that you look at rhod...erhh zimbabwe these days is anything of that left?

  • @TheHabati ...Rhodesia was a basket case in every sense........morally and economically! Characterised by fuel shortages and land mines. A country that deprived its own citizens of the basic human right of self determination. A country led by a mad man whose peers were Idi Amin, Joseph Stalin and Adolf Hitler. Mugabe is only tolerated by the masses because their only reference was the despotic maniac that was Ian Douglas Smith. May he burn in hell!

  • @MrZingy

    1. Fuel shortages because of sanctions.

    2. Land mines because of terrorists.

    3. Country that had freedom, education, healthcare, jobs yes.

    4. Zimbabwe is a country led by a man called mugabe who's idols were joseph stalin, communists overall and in its own sense adolf hitler aswell because mugabe blames everything on whites just as hitler did on jews.

  • @TheHabati ...ever wonder why the civilised world placed sanction on your little Rhodesia. It wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that the Rhodesian Front was an illegitimate facist regime that was hell bent on terrorising and murdering its own population. BTW a person who fights for their god given rights is called a freedom fighter not a terrorist!

  • @TheHabati ...and before you go there - I do not defend mugabe. He is a failure unto his own people - just as Smithy was!!!!!

  • @MrZingy

So no more arguments huh? Winning.

  • @TheHabati ...well it was you that came here to praise the state of Rhodesia and its leader. I merely remind you that the Rhodesia government, not necessarily its people, was a shame to humanity.

  • @MrZingy

Currently all african governments are a shame to humanity when compared to Rhodesian government.

  • @TheHabati ...no African government has ever passed laws that overtly discriminated against 95% of its own population. That denied the majority of its people the most basic of human rights. A government that refused to recognise UN treaties and declarations. Ian Smith and The Rhodesian Front deserved a chair in front of the Hague. IDS can thank his lucky stars that he was not swung from a tree, as he deserved no less. An unashamed tyrant and, whats more, a true coward!

  • @MrZingy

UN treaties were bullshit, denied human rights, yea right, they had housing, water, food, jobs, education, oh yes! those are the things what africans took away from each other, whites just didn't allow blacks to go to the same toilet, and you think thats worse? African governments might not pass laws what discriminate, but in all other ways they do, rape, murder, genocides, corruption, hunger, no water, no education. So your comment is bulllshit.

  • @TheHabati ....when the chips r down, you reveal the true Rhodesian in you - vulgar, crass and with the inability to view a black person as a human being. It is more than jobs and toilets, its about universal suffrage and the rights to self to determination. The aspirations of the blacks to choose their own leaders, even bad leaders, was a legitimate one - so say the civilised world. This is why we decided that Rhodesia must end, because it was beyond reform.

  • @MrZingy

Btw, your profile says your town is leeds and country is zambia? Didn't you enjoy life in Africa, craved that life what black rhodesians had in Rhodesia?

  • @TheHabati ..as usual you make little sense. I am not Rhodesian nor Zimbabwean. Remember "perfidious Albion" ....well lets just say we are back to haunt you once again and remind you that your evil ways will never be tolerated again!

  • @MrZingy

They had education&jobs etc. How many times do I have to say that, unlike your people in Zambia. And at which did I say you're rhodesian or zimbabwean? Once again I have to repeat myself, LEARN TO READ. "We are back to haunt you once again" Should you fuck off from UK then, thats WHITE PEOPLE's country, you god damn leech. We white people could kick you from europe because we wont tolerate your rape&crime waves anymore huh? And please, give the PRECISE laws what allowed discrimination

  • @TheHabati ....good heavens, why would you assume I am black? Not all white people are racist bigots like you. Leave the UK? I'm British! The sooner you realise that you and your comic leader are a sad indictment on humanity the better. Bet you feel like the fool you are!

  • @MrZingy

You're british, so why your country is zambia then? Derp. And w/e, I'm gonna call this argument off as you can only spam 1 thing over and over again, Smith is stupid and racist and blacks are all perfect while you continue to ignore my questions/answers.

  • @TheHabati ....you have inadvertently answered your own question, however my guess is that you are too stupid to realise it. You remain one of humanities less attractive offerings and condemned to a life of hatred and pain!

  • @TheHabati oh and to help you on your way....the Lands Apportionment Act was based on racial lines. Your little Rhodesia is gone and will NEVER come back. It remains the laughing stock of the free and civilised world!

  • @MrZingy w/e, feel free to ignore how much better things were back in Rhodesia. : )

  • @TheHabati ..better for who?? Things were great in Nazi Germany for the insane few!

  • @MrZingy Starving does not seem to do you any good.

  • @rapartist43 ...starving mate????....I'm famished!! Better throw a few more shrimps on the barbie!lol!

  • @MrZingy Go tell the Zimbabweans :-D

  • @MrZingy

Btw, please tell PRECISELY what the laws etc. were what discriminated blacks in Rhodesia, would be interesting to hear.

  • @TheHabati ...so you are telling me there was not distinction made between races in Rhodesia? Are you serious?

  • @MrZingy

No? Learn to read, and please answer to my question regards the PRECISE laws.

  • @TheHabati ...as you are well aware the Rhodesian system of "apartheid" was perpetuated by a series of by-laws that allow local authorites to discriminate between the races (Reps Theatre case in point). Because blacks had no access to decent education and thus were unable to create wealth, Smithy, in his limitless stupidity, tried to mask racial division by imposing minimum economic capabilities as a measure of the right to vote. Rhodesian mentality is a slate on humanity.

  • @chimerandeipi

It will change one day. It may not carry the name of Rhodesia, but someday, the freedom and liberty that was, shall be restored. And in that, Rhodesia will have risen again.

  • and just all you wait, one day we will 'liberate' zimbabwe.

  • Long live Rhodesia!

  • Most of you guys, blacks and whites alike seem to be motivated by hate and racism, its time to accept the reality and move on. Black people yearned for Freedom like their White brothers. Whites too fought to safeguard their future from what Mr Mugabe has turned Zimbabwe into what it is today. Many black Zimbabwe do not approve of what Mr Mugabe has done to the country; I think it would be unfair to say Zimbabweans deserve of their current situations because of the selfishness of one person an

  • Reality check: Rhodesia was built by white people. Without them it would never have been anything but another impoverished African nation, which is what it has now become again after driving out the whites. The most blatant racial genocide of the past fifty years has been ignored by Western powers because its victims were white people. Now the black Africans of Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) will survive on roasted field rats until they finally starve. Sorry, but you asked for it, folks.

  • thank you for posting this and god bless ian smith, he is a true hero, even as a 27 year old new zealander who never had the privilage of living in rhodesia under his leadership, ill state that rhodesia was an almost perfect country, its so sad to look at what it has become today

  • @preludefan ...Rhodesia was a perfect country if you happened to be white and complicit with IDS's tryranny....Zimbabwe is a perfect country of you happen to be black and complicit with RGM's tyranny!

  • What the world has lost in the demise and destruction of this extraordinary country only future generations will know.History will write the final verdict.I salute IDS!

  • God Bless Rhodesia...God Bless Ian Douglas Smith...

  • we will miis you Ian Smith great son of africa; holly moyo vancouver

  • May his soul rest in peace. he was a great leader who loved his people. I am a black zimbabwean who respects Mr Ian Smith. He worked hard to have the country be what it is today. -- John Motsi

  • @dsimango Thank you for speaking the truth dsimango...you are the kind of person who reminds me to forget colour..I grew up with Ian Smith..I grew up with black kids who grew up with Ian Smith..we knew him.. we knew a man who did the best for all people around him..on his farm and in the city....His soul definitely rests in peace..

  • Chimerandeipi : Rhodesia lives on in all of us..after all, you are watching us on You Tube. You are a foul-mouthed lout either living in the West or in a ruined Zimbabwe, living on Western hand-outs.God Bless Ian Douglas Smith.

  • You are welcome to your comments, however you seem to be the one with the racial problem. What are you doing to fix our broken country?

  • Stevoutubo, thanks very much for posting this.

I confess I lost it about a minute and a half into the video. Big boys don't cry, of course. It's just that I had something in my eye.

With all due respect, I would say that in a certain sense this was not just a memorial for a great man, but a memorial for a generation or three, all around the world, who were robbed of what their ancestors worked so hard for.

  • Thanks for posting your comment. I totally agree with your thoughts. Good luck...

  • Requiescat in pace; you did everything in your power. May you not be forgotten by future generations.

  • Would you consider uploading the full service?

  • Would love to, but I didn't film the whole thing. There was one "official" cameramna, but not sure who it was...

  • Looks like it was a lovely day and service.

    Thank you for posting.

    TE.D.S

  • Rest & peace Ian Smith You was a good man

  • Can anyone tell me where he is burried?

  • I regret that our government in the USA had a hand in bringing Mugabe to power. No nation has been 100% on human rights, ours included. Mugabe has proven that human rights mean little or nothing to him. A few Zimbabweans live in our city who have fled his regime.

  • The Greatest man ever to grace the planet, Rest In Peace Ian Smith, you hero

  • Thanks Ian Smith, your memory will live on ,not just in my Heart, but also in the Hearts of many others.Rest in Peace we L:ove you!

  • Mr Smith has been vindicated by Mugabe's treacherous actions, don't you think.

  • Seems like it was an excellent service for a brilliant man. Rest In Peace Ian Smith.

  • Thanks for your comments. Vindication is the word that comes to mind...

  • I hope to go one day and lay flowers on Ian Smith's grave. The man was a hero and had more honor and dignity in 1 finger than Mugave has in his whole body!

  • You are mad. Gave you back your land and then what? How many did you personally get?

Its only fools like you who dont realise that Zimbabwe is a multi colour nation and all Zimbabweans should have equal rights.

  • they did have equal rights rhodesia had the best standards of living and rights for both black and white than any other african nation

  • Am surprised that there was such a large turn out for him @ Kings Park. Mind you, if I had've known about it at the time I would've rocked up, regardless of how critical one can be of Smith himself.

  • Interesting Comments from every one. One inportant quality this website has - Which is not present in Mugabe's Zimbabwe, is freedom of speach.

Go MDC, and welcome Presindent Morgan!

  • The real question is - And this is one Mr Smith would be asking right now.... How do we move on from this point in time. How do we fix this wonderful country, that has been raped, and broken by a greedy dictator.

  • Massive aid from the U.N and if needed a peacekeeping force. My other point may well be fantasy but the return of the illegally evicted farmers to the land would help a hell of alot in a relativly short period of time.

  • Money in business...but what a waste that would be. if i was on the cabinet on any power that could actually help (america) i would be adviceing against it.

THe country was the "Jewel of Africa" the qaulity of the cities with the shopping malls and massive cinemas wasnt comparible with even johannesburg or cape town. The country had everything and everything to be made and was completely destroyed by the currnet regime becuase of there bittered attiude, one which can only be 1000x worse now.

  • Hold your horses, Our Western leaders are too cowardly to intervene if Mugabe tries to crush the MDC supporters.

  • rupert81,

I agree with your comments. The SADC and other African leaders are spineless too. On the fantasy note, wouldn't it be nice, if once the 'old man' has been ousted, all the squandered funds and monies could be repatriated. This money would go a long way to helping rebuild God's own country.

  • mboro yenyu you with little brain, pamberi namugabe, you are such an idiot bro, what is mugabe giving you better yet what is he standing for, he is a killer

  • Ian Smith was one of the best statesmen Africa has ever had. Long Live Rhodesia!

  • I really do wish they had done a better job on the memorial alter, those flowers looked jolly mean! And where was the flag? For goodness sake you ought to have had the old green and white laid out or on a standard beside!

Oh well I suppose one ought to give you Australians an E for effort. Lets do a proper job next year shall we? Starting with, ALSO standing for Rise o' Voices Of Rhodesia.

Full marks of course for arranging the fly past, and the piper! I shed a tear for our dear ol' Smithie RIP

  • Rest in peace sir we salute you as a great leader and a WW2 hero who fought for our freedom.

  • Ian Smith was a man we all should study,he was a man of great stature, hones and decent. I only wish there where more men like him.

  • Mugabe is a cunt

  • dont get me started on that racist mugabe , if you dont know what I'm talking about just keep the hell out of this topic, you stupidy little knowledge mugabe's little idiot, you dont know nothing you mother fucker, I'm black full of diginity, stay out. i dont like Mugabe and sure as hell dont like Ian for hee was a racist so is mugabe. my only wish is people see each other as people not by the tugs or colour of there skin.

  • idiot

  • IAN SMITH ,RIP FROM LA PAZ BOLIVIA

  • May the Lord Bless him and keep him, always.

  • Although I never met him, I was in Rhodesia in 1977 during "the freedom fighting years" and whilst visiting Victoria Falls & Wankie Game Reserve we spend as much money as we can to keep the country going. I hope that God will keep him near, cos he was a good man.

  • Hi clasmichele

Ian Smith cared about the non-white population and, should you care to dispute this, you will find that in Rhodesian law there was plenty of protection provided.

What you, and the rest of the world have troble understanding, is that if you take an iron age culture and throw it into 20th century time zone, it will struggle to cope. Mugabe and the latest trouble in Kenya is my proof of this. All we wanted to do was delay black majority rule until it could cope.

    It cannot!!!

  • you are right, since you the 70s were 20th century for you

  • ....sorry colasmichele - cannot read your comment....

  • I am black and I dont believe in demonising whites. Ian Smith contributed a lot towards making Zimbabwe what it is today. Yes, he was openly racist but who wasnt then? He was a man of principles...and he stood by what he believed in....

  • He was a leader of Zimbabwe and will be remembered for that as will Mugabe when he kicks the bucket (hopefully soon) Its great that Rhodies have found a place they can continue being Rhodies but perhaps it would have made more sense if all these people remained in Zim and stuck it out like Smith did. He was the captain of the ship, he sank with it while the rats hopped off.He was a true patriot, thru thick and thin. I pray he is buried in his homeland as he wished. RIP.

  • The loss of a truly GREAT MAN. I just finished reading his memoires, "The Great Betrayal", and what a statesman he was. His policies were well concieved and intricately scutinized, and everything that he did was for the benefit of Rhodesia.

If Ian Smith had stayed in office, not only would Rhodesia be a first world nation, it would have been a country where white and black worked together, as they did during his years as PM. He should be given a Full States Funeral.

  • Just finished reading it as well. I felt that Mr. Smith was a victim of policies outside of his control.

  • Well done on a fine tribute and turn out from you guys 'down under' - good weather and all! I hope to post some short clips from the UK service just as soon as I can put them together - the content is available on CD if there is anyone who would like to hear the UK service. Neil

  • Look forward to it Neil.

Mr Smith's death taught me, once and for all- That Rhodesians do in fact never die.. Ironic, Zimbabwe managed to die before he did!

    Best regards

    Stevo

  • Thank you. That was great, i wish i had found something like that here in the UK. What a great effort to a great man and to an amazing nation.

  • Here in the UK we wouldn't be allowed to do something like that. It would cause uproar.

Just imagine all the leftists trying to lynch us for paying tribute to a man who served our nation and Rhodesia with honour and bravery.

  • R.I.P. Mr. Smith. I read your biography and I maynot have agreed with your policies, but you were a WW2 hero, statesman, and a gentleman with class until the end.

  • A great man. A true pleasure to serve him and our country. God bless you and R.I.P.

  • R.I.P. Mr Smith.

  • Truly heartwarming, true Rhodesian spirit.

Rhodesians of Australia stand proud, stand tall.

    Bill (Canada)

  • Well done Stevo that was very fitting.
