Tantalums... used in some capacitors (which are polarized) because such capacitors can have a high capacitance, and unlike their aluminium electrolytic counterparts, can last longer. I heard that before, tantalums could spontaneously combust, which is why they weren't initially popular.
But now a days they are better but they are still more expensive than Al electrolytics per uF of capacitance. So you won't see them being used as power supply smoothing caps any time soon. :)
In the semiconductor industry, Tanalum and Tanatalum Nitride are heavily used as a barrier film for Copper. (Cu lines are used to carry currents and Cu plugs are used to interconnect multi-level Cu lines. Cu tends to diffuse fairly fast in the surrounding oxide so we basically encapsulate Cu with a Ta/TaN barrier).
For capacitor applications, we use Tantalum pentaoxide as the dielectric material in capacitors for specialized applications only.
awww may you should've added the information of why tantalum is so important in making coltan, or rather why coltan (and so tantalum) itelf isn't so easy to replace and so is causing problems in the Kongo. (the chemical interests in it) But may its just my opinion...and the video would going to be too long ;-)
I live 5-`0 minutes from a tantalum mine, it gets shipped right to the Canadian space agency as well as nasa, its used in making shuttle, now i think its because its super resistant to heat that it makes up part of the heat sheildings on the shuttle
well they don't try all. they check the already known facts about what they want to use(in this case electronic conductors). and if it's possible that it might work they try it.
Is tantalum good to be used as anodes for electrolysis?

@sockington1 - wrap them in tantalum and pass 10,000volts throught it ;-)

Tantalum is named after tantalus in greek mythology, who had to stand up to his neck in water for eternity and not allowed to drink any

Tantalum is used in cellphones now.. Since it stores charge..

This video could use a revamp. The process for making tantalum capacitors is very clever!

Tantalum is strong and hard as steel. Chemically stable more than stainlesss steel. And more ductile than pure copper.
It's perfect material for EFP and explosive jammer.

Tantalum is hard and ductile. As trong as stainless stell and more ductile than copper. With high chemical and physical stability.
Perfect choice for EFP. and explosive forming jammer.

Is tantalum in 'ceramic' capacitors (pink-orange discs), electrolytic ones (dark-colored cylinders), or both?
1RadicalOne 1 year ago
@1RadicalOne They're in tantalum capacitors (solid state monolith and bead type) though you can get tantalum based electrolytics.

How do they know which types of metals are best in electronics? Do they just keep trying different ones until something works?

That is exactly what "Research" means.

In the early days tantalum capacitors had a nasty habit of catching fire and explode.
The manufacturing process is better today, and tantalum suits best with electronics using lower voltage.
