  • Diesel does have a slightly higher energy content by volume than gasoline, though the difference does vary a bit.

Diesels have a lower brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) than gasoline engine primarily because they have a higher thermal efficiency, i.e. they can extract more useful work from the chemical energy in the fuel.

  • This is the schnizz, peeps! Best sound ever!

  • The idle is alot lower than a detroit 2 stroke. idle's like a 4 stroke.

  • the two stroke diesel is the future . with modern emission equiptment and hdi technology thers no reason why a 1 litre 3 cylinder two stroke diesel cannot power a family car with low emisions and great mpg

  • sounds like a regular diesel...

  • @offspringfanman96 that doesnt sound like regular diesel, you commented on the wrong video

    o.0

  • @MegaZsolti yes it doessssss

  • @offspringfanman96 sry no, check your ears, if they are up

  • @MegaZsolti lol

  • cool truck.

  • With a Foden, do you have to drive it with your foot to the floor like a Detroit? Not a good idea to lug a Detroit when there is a load on it.

  • @spencnaz The Foden 2 stroke diesel had a capacity of only 4 litres, (175 bhp) & was competing against big 4 stroke diesels of the time of some 12 litres, so it certainly had to be kept in its optimum rev range. The engine had to be kept between 1500-2300 rpm. Any lower than 1500 it would be as flat as a pancake, any higher than 2300 it would be redlining. The driver basically played tunes on the box to keep the revs up!

  • yeah rev it like a bike

  • That almost sounds like a 6v53 Detroit.

  • @CJO740 not really. we had a 6v53 detriot diesel 2 stroke in our sea scout power boat (non-turbo), and they sound way different then this foden.

  • @mrspoon233 i guess the sound is just really shitty on my computor

  • In the 1960s I worked at a garage in what is now Telford (UK) and the entire staff used to go to the main entrance when a local gravel company's SWB 8 wheeler 2-stroke fully laden used to go past with it's engine howling, a magnificent sound, the memory of it gives me 'goose-pimples' to this day.

  • wow that ol girl sound like she want s work NOW and hard work! damn EPA ruins everything good.

  • the us EPA doesn and never has applied to this truck. this truck is BRITISH

  • For such a serious posting the latest or majority of comments are very disappointing if you have nothing positive or really negative (with any weight) to say I'd be inclined to ease off a bit .

The engine sounds a treat !!

  • Now when i was a lad, late 70,s, i went for a walk with me dad one xmas day,and i can only describe as awesome what i heard, our local fire brigade had a simon snorkel with a foden 2 stroke diesel and it was flat out then down through the box and off again, across a deserted chichester it just sounded mega,2 stroke diesels rock!

  • Sounds superb .

  • they stopped making these 10 years before I was born. I still like listening to them though, and detroit diesels. as for buying one, no way!! in the case of a detroit, sounding awesome is no trade off for low power, outageously bad fuel consumption and oil incontinence

  • Some of the folks commenting here should know that these big diesel two strokes aren't like the small 2T motorbike engines at all.

They don't have crankcase compression ,and so oil doesn't mix with the petrol/air mixture.

The blue smoke you can is similar to what you'd get with an old worn 4 stroke engine.

All modern large ship engines are turbocharged 2T with powers up to 115,000 bhp

  • About as environmentally friendly as barbecuing baby toucans on a pile of old tyres, but who cares! Anything to upset the government sponsored lentil knitters is OK with me! Carbon Offsetting? What a load of cobblers. Now, where did I park my Wartburg?

  • nothing like that sound in the world also my brother ford 7.3 liter diesel sounds great too its IDI none power syroke and sounds great

  • I'd like to rev that up outside the Environment Agency just to annoy them. Then light a nice smoky coal fire when they open their windows to see what all the noise is about.

  • Yes that's right. 46 years old . You're obviously a deluded snivel servant who buys all this environmental crap and enforces it on the rest of us.

  • 2 strokes ftw! hahaha wll im kinda on both sides, were all fucked cause we are destroying the world and no mater what we do its not going to stop, but lifes to short to worry about getting crappy lil hybrid cars,

  • so the world is 4.5 billion years old... and 100 years of industry has destroyed it....

if you lost 1 hair off your head, would you call it a bald spot...

  • Has there been 4.5 billion years of industry?

  • that's what i just said... co2 is a natural occurring gas, people/animals/insects/fish/bacteria, all produce co2

just as anything that gets burned, rotts, rusts etc, it all releases all the co2 they have absorbed during the time they grew

so the last 100 years of industry has causes global warming, but the last 4.5 billion years of natural production ( which is argually more yearly then industry) didnt....

  • Nope, sorry, there was no Co2 emissions until SUVS and diesel trucks.

... I'm joking. In 100% agreement with you

  • ur one of those smartass college kids. diesel are far better for the envoriment then a gasoline engine is no matter two strike or not

  • whats that got anything to do with anything i said....

    btw im a diesel mechanic....

  • all i can say is DIESEL POWER and i aint even to the college level yet, haha, they make more power, use less fuel, and they are more dependable while lasting longer too!

  • @MossyOak83 They make more torque, not power.

  • @2042nicky Torque is power, what do you think turns the wheels? HP is just a measurement of work done over given time.

  • @SumpinKing They are not the same thing.... Seriously look it up. Power = Horse Power I believe.

  • @SumpinKing Power is a measurement of speed and torque, or something along those lines.

  • @MossyOak83 They have less power but more torque. Which is why all manufacturers turbocharge their diesels for them to compete with more powerful DOHC.

They also sound really clunky :s

  • @Renceau turbochargers on production vehichles are more for fuel efficency than anything

  • @idfkquestionmark That goes without telling I think.

  • @MossyOak83

Diesels DO NOT use less fuel. The there more energy in a litre of diesel fuel than in a litre of gasoline.

  • @NearAbbeyRoad Which is exactly WHY THEY USE LESS FUEL for the same horsepower rating.

  • @NearAbbeyRoad there more efficient :)

  • @NearAbbeyRoad I don't know where you got your information form but diesel has far less caloric value than gasoline, same as jet fuel. They both poduce less heat than gasoline engines when operating. Because of the lower temps and the slower flame front speeds compression engines don't have the horsepower gas engines do but they have a fatter, flatter torque curve at lower rpm. Look it up if you don't believe, I have owned diesels for over 30yrs.

  • Why do you watch these videos.... To start fights?

  • great sound

  • sloper

  • if 2 stroke is a revver n diesles dont rev at all whats this bitch rev out at? also what gas do u run?

  • 2 stroke diesels rev high. this one sounds like its hitting about 3500 rpm

  • Nahh sounds a slight bit lower than 3500

  • they only sound like they turn so fast because they are popping on every rotation, unlike a four stroke; every other turn

  • I can't believe how dumb some people are, I think the name two stroke diesel already explains what gas it runs on.

  • diesel with twostroke oil?

  • No it actually doesn't have or need no oil in combustion chamber, because the oil is in the oil pan like gasoline 4 stroke, and it has exhaust valves like 4 stroke and intake ports like 2 stroke.

  • ah thx

  • lol true dat

  • Detroit Diesel 6v92 with open headers sounds better

  • seen that vid, GMC's sick

  • It's not a GMC, it's a Foden made in England.

  • sound likes mercedes benz 1114 (om352)

  • Well I dont know much about this engine, but it sure is quick reving at idle, just like say a quick revving motocrosser !

  • do you even know what a two stroke is?

  • yea im sorry i do,i just coudnt believe that there's a two stroke diesel engine, ive never seen it,so sorry i know your right.

  • you are a moron

  • Just when I thought I knew a lot about engines you came up with this clip. I did not know that they had 2 stroke diesel engine. It thought this is a joke till I heard the sound of the engine in this clip. Anyway like 2 stroke bezien engine they do make a lot of emission.

  • Ummm, perhaps you should research engines such as the original Detroit Diesel and UD (UD copied the 71 series Detroit). That'll get u started.

  • Music to the ears! Do you have any recordings of a Commer two stroke diesel?

  • do a search. I put two up.

  • The Foden 2 stroke doesn't sound anything like the Detroit 2 stroke engine - the Detroit (anything other than the V8 or bigger) sounds like a V8 at flat-ouut revs

  • Thanks for that mate, always heard of how good a 2 stroke Foden could sound, but never heard it myself until now.

  • 2 strokes Diesel Engine is the best. The powerfull and economy engine in the World.

  • All 2-stroke diesel truck engines (Detroit 2-strokes) were discontinued in the US about 30-years ago due to terrible fuel economy, terrible emissions, and terrible longevity. (Must be the "Big Oil Conspiracy", right??

Detroit Diesel now makes and sells an EXCELLENT 4-stroke truck engine in the US,called the Series-60. Stop buy your local truck dealer to check it out.

  • JGMagoo,

Not sure where you got your info on two cycle

DD's being "discontinued in the US about 30

    years ago",but that is INcorrect.

The last 12v71 came off the assy.line in Nov.

    1994, the 92 series in 1998, and the 149series

    is Still in production.

The 92 series(now a 96series) is actually still in production down in Florida through a company known as"ALL World Power Products" owned by Jack Bivens, a former employee of Detroit Diesel since 1964, and started this co. in 1981. Google i

  • Thanks for the info! I will check out the "96 series" I should have been more clear in my statement. They were discontinued for ON-Highway truck use in the USA. I know they were, (and still are) used in many off-road and industrial applications. Note that I DID say "truck engines". ;o)

  • I googled "Detroit Series 96" and found nothing. Typo?

  • Ohh man.... i didnt knew that diesels could have så HI ACCELERATION!

  • sounds nice.

  • Is this a six-cyl engine,actually?

  • do they have expansion chambers?

  • No they are fuel injected and have the combination of a turbo and a supercharger instead.

  • I love how 2 stroke diesels sound completely awesome, unlike gassers

  • 2 stroke or whatever !!! it sounds like a proper wagon. My 99 ERF EC 410 dont even sound that good & thats with a pair of Eminox stacks !!!!!

  • sure does not look like a 2 stroker

  • at idle it doesnt, but when he revs it up, theres no mistaking

  • Oops! that's Britain. The Foden has a distinct difference from the Detroit: the Fuel system. Foden uses an inline injection pump, short injector lines, and finally the pressure-opened injectors themselves. Detroits used unit injectors operated by the camshaft. Each unit injector has a throttle rack actuated by a common linkage.

  • Foden: Britian's Detroit Diesel

  • Looks like we got a genius in our midst

  • stop responding and start liking fords.

  • Thats not a Detroit, Its a Foden FD6. It's not supposed to sound like a Detroit. For a comment, that was kinda stupid wasn't it, don't cha think?

  • Well sorry, I weren't sure

  • would that have a power band?

  • i wouldent think it would have powervalves but its possible

  • it's fun. It really doesn't sound like a usual 2 stroke petrol engine.

  • Something could be wrong with it.

  • No it doesnt, cos its a diesel... duh

  • detroit i think still makes 92 series and up for locomotives don't quote me on that. i don't know as much about locomotives as i do trucks. but they quit making two strokes for trucks in the late 80's and for metro buses in the early 90's. the only detroit series left for trucks is the 60's series which is a four stroke inline 6.

  • I can assure people that there are 2 stroke diesels. I look after 4 Foden FD 6 powered generators myself, brilliant engines!

  • I am not familiar with Foden diesels. How big is this particular engine, horsepower rating, and how many cylinders? Thanks in advance.

  • Foden FD 6 engines are 4.8 litre, six cylinder in-line configuration. They are rated between 90 HP and 210 HP. This is dependant on engine Mark (1-7) and application. All were supercharged (Roots type), some were also Turbocharged with inter/after cooling.

  • Thanks.

  • Thanks for posting...as a boy I was always fascinated by the Foden Supercharged 8x4 of Farming Supplies LTD, Heybridge,Maldon, Essex which I think was their only vehicle. It sounded like a huge hair drier on the road. The registration was I think 1061 DD or similar. I don't know the original Glos operator.

  • Yes there is look it up on Google, or no better, wikipedia.

  • yes there is and has been for many years.

  • There are 2 stroke diesels. I look after 4 Foden FD6 engines myself.

  • what?

  • revs very high why do two stroke diesel rev higher than 4 strokes?

  • It fires on every revolution, rather than on every other revolution like a 4-stroke does. So it sounds like 4000rpm at 2000rpm. Sounds cool. Consider this when you hear a chainsaw revving and compare it to the the 4-stroke engine.

  • They don't. They sound faster because they have twice as many power strokes. instead of an intake, compression, power and exhaust cycle they have a combined intake/exhaust cycle just before and after bottom dead center. then a normal compression and power. every down stroke is a power stroke.

  • yay 2 things i love diesel and 2 stroke

  • a proper mota,NONE OF YA FORIEGN MUCK EA !

  • Thank you so much for posting this, I had never heard a foden 2 stroke before. I look forward to more from you

  • I think these engines are better than detriot diesels.

  • bite your tong

  • Actually nah, I chenge my mind, I'll stick to Detriots.

  • Thats better

  • so what will that thing red line at?

  • Although it sounds higher this one is actually set at 2000rpm. They should be about 2100 - 2200rpm.

  • Visited the U.K November 2004. Rode in a 1970 S36 two-stroke Foden on a 200 mile run. Will never forget it. What a sound. Did a 45 minute audio recording of it working hard up Necastle way and put it on CD. Nothing sounds as good as a Foden two-stroke. Would like you to hop in the cab and record it working hard.

  • This was recorded from our S34 which has the Foden Mark 6 Two Stroke & 12 speed box, so it can make a fair sound. I take it from your user name that you are into Commer TS3's. My father used to drive a Maxiload. I should have a few more video clips on here soon.

  • Any chance you could remove the stupid comments from the even more stupid "people" who cannot engage their brain *before they engage their mouths* and as a result of which they post stupid comments... Nice work on the truck, and great video as well!

  • Nice!

Always wanted to hear a Foden 2 stroker.

I hope you can upload some more.
