my friends and I did the same thing at the corner of Yonge and Dundas in toronto, the only thing the police officer did was draw a chalk line on the corner and said we could not pass the"hug" line cause we were blocking people crossing the street...other then that he was completely okay with it...AWESOME experience :)

Nothing of the sort happened. This happened in Toronto, over several hours and many policemen must have seen this. The rule is, if you're not hurting or bothering anyone (-if there are no complaints), and you are not interfering with the normal flow of traffic (pedestrian and otherwise), then most things are okay to do.

I think your depiction of Toronto police is grossly unfair, as this case demonstrates.

Sorry you think this is a "lame version", but I really think that you should "cut some slack" for the organizer of this "Free Hugs" effort. First of all, she didn't call her friends to show up, she happened by chance to meet a large group of them in front of City Hall, because I guess she has a lot of friends.

95% of the people she hugged that day WERE strangers - one of whom, me - is no longer a stranger to her.

Before you judge or attribute a motivation, you should ask.

There are generally 5 things to keep in mind:

Don't accost people, yell 'free hugs' & whoever comes to get one will get hugged.

2nd, be careful hugging them because if they are older/kids you might have to be a little more gentle.

3rd, don't wear things that can be stolen. (yes, as much as people are suspicious of our intentions they may also take advantage of us).

Don't obstruct traffic or the proceedings of whatever place you are doing it in.

5th: SMILE. it's half the experience.
