I first saw this in a film called The Fantastic Animation Festival with a lot of other similarly psychedelic animated short films that can be located on Youtube but sadly the film itself in whole is not yet available on DVD. I wish I knew to whom it could be petioned to release this wonderful collection.
@sowhosasking My little sister had it-our mom was a big Cat Stevens fan.Wish it was still around, neat little book.Lucky you,I might have to look myself.
look...everybody!..its a piece of one of the white circles that got dislodged and slipped out of the movie cut from Yello Submarine..the sea of holes! where's bilbo baggins?
I saw this when it was broadcast. Steve Dmitri georgiu, a good graphic artist and animator and voiceover artist, too. I have adopted this as a life philosophy, and it hasn't been far off. I used to sing and dance with the Moroccan grocery store owner in my Paris suburban nabe, where I moved to from the USA to get healthcare. He loved CAT, but had no turntable, or I'd have lent him my vinyl!
I think someone was under the influence of...well, use your imagination, when this cartoon was put together. The story, the psychedelic images and colors, not to mention a guy flying around on a moon visiting talking trees. Reminded me of "Puff the Magic Dragon". Very entertaining for my 3 year old though. Classic Cat Stevens.
Someone please tell me... did he actually do this cartoon himself? Cuz I know he did the artwork for that album featuring Teaser and the Firecat himself... and is it him narating??
Cat Stevens was the producer, animation was done at London's TRICKFILM around 1972, with Errol Lecain as chief animator. The narration is by Spike Milligan.
@socialisto75 So awesome. I love Spike Milligan, and I love that he did the narration. He slipped a bit of Eccles (a character from the 1950s BBC Goon Show radio program he did w/ Peter Sellers) in there.
Yes the art work was drawn by Cat Stevens himself. The narration was by Spike Milligan. It was also the title of a children's book. The story features the title characters from the album cover, top-hatted young Teaser and his pet Firecat, who attempt to put the moon back in its place after it falls from the sky. Published in 1972, the book has been out of print since the mid-1970s. Although I think you can stil get a few second hand copies.
@rotenpoet Cat Stevens not only did the cover art for both Teaser and the Firecat and Tea for the Tillerman albums, but the artwork was sourced from the children's book that he wrote and illustrated also called "Teaser and the Firecat"
The cartoon is the animated version of "Teaser and the Firecat", the book.
It was a great book, (I did have a copy once), but I'm not sure if it would still be available.
There may have been others but I distinctly remember Linda Ronstadt doing "Fill My Eyes" and Dr. John doing "Pop Star". The whole show was a tribute to Cat.
Veronica, sweetheart - it was _Spike_ Milligan! A great comic genius himself - check him out - and Cat Stevens is now a Muslim called Yussuf Islam. Strange Days indeed...!
Great video. I believe though, there is an animated version of Moonshadow from Don Kirschner's Rock Concert TV show, that was actually animated by Cat Stevens himself. From what I recall, the pictures were very similar to the Teaser and The Firecat album.
I love this song and this animation! And even my kids love it. They always want to watch it and try to sing this song though they don't speak English.
A great restored copy is available now on the Cat Stevens MAJIKAT EARTH TOUR 1976 DVD. Cool to see it again -as I first did - on ABC! Check out my "Cat Stevens - Bitterblue - Changes IV - C79" video too. Lots of rare pictures and vinyl art!
The animation was produced by some British studio I know that. It was highlighted in the 1977 feature-length compilationn, "Fantastic Animation Festival".
Also, it's great to hear the late Spike Milligan's narration. This was one of the first times I heard him; I couldn't figure him out! I haven't seen this since the first animation festival I attended. Thank you.
I love this vidio,,,The music is so beautiful it takes me away to another world and the vidio is grat too. Firecat Rox!!! I know i am onli young but i think that Cat Stevens is the greatest music artist ever!!!! xxx

This is just perfect. I'd always wondered if there was a story behind the "Teaser and the Firecat" album cover art...
And, I was so lucky to find the original children's book for sale at my local library!
