we have the technolgy and air space to make aircraft that convert from flying power mode to ground mode yet we are not using it. the only problem with airports is that they dont have enough room to park many small planes and you never see many aircraft parked in airport parking zones for planes. the answer is simple have 2 engines. one for flying and one for ground mode as props and jets are dangerous for people walking around. we have the space for runways. lets start now

@PHeMoX i doubt it would be legal to take off from the road, since it needs 500-600 ft to take off from the water, granted there is more friction from the water since the craft is in constant contact with the water, but would probably not be legal since it is not legal for other small craft.

@Tautuo Good point, but there are many places small aircraft can and are allowed to land assuming you've got a license to fly and possibly a permit to land wherever you wish to land.

In this case the plane being so small certainly provides you with the option to land on the road. In fact, when I come to think of it, I believe there are many exceptions anyway. Just think of sail planes that are allowed to land on farmlands and such.

There is a video called Icon A5 at Oshkosh showing it in the water with a guy standing under the wing then it taking off. there is also a video at an air show of the guy sitting in it. the maiden flight video shows them taking it off the trailer and shows their tech people on jet skies in follow!! If you want cheap personal flight, VTOL will never be the way to go ricefarmer. Defying gravity takes a lot of energy. If a human were built to fly like an airplane, he would need about 3 horsepower to do it. If a human were built as a helicopter, he would need 9 HP. Fixed wing flight will always be cheaper pound for dollar.

We have plenty of examples of vtol. I'm just saying the one thing they have in common is that they are terribly inefficient.

The martin Jetpack uses 10 gallons of gas to transport one person 30 miles. The plane I currently fly will take four people 120 miles on 10 gallons.

VTOL will always have more opperating cost than fixed wing. Thats why 99% of all VTOLs are military, they dont care about money.
