I think the A400M would have better benefited from twin coaxial prop systems, rather than the 4 prop conventional configuration. Larger prop diameter with 12 blades total for each coaxial system. Although the current configuration is more reliable... And quieter.
In question efficiency of the coax, you are right.
The big Ratier propeller from the A400M are realy silent for the power...One day, fly this AN22 over my house at more than 10 000m (liners altitude): i ear it's very melodic sound long before i see it, with glasses...
The AN22 is the first (1965) big (80tons max charge) tactical transport of the world, unprepared field capable...the C5 galaxy (100tons max charge) came in service in 1969 but not unprepared field capable
