  • O collin, u so crazy! I actually saw them in collumbus ohio recently; blew my mind outthe top of my head :D

  • First off, what the hell is a "Chimbley"?

Second, when the woman is talking she says, "I havent been (something)'d since the day my husband died" I know what she means but I cant understand the word shes using. Someone please help.

  • @Welihy I think Chimbley may be a euphemism in this context? Since Petra Hayden sings, "I have not been SWEPT since the day my husband died."

  • @oysteryogurt I've actually thought about that a bit, like how songs usually have meanings behind them like Hotel California, but I can't figure out how the word CHIMBLEY fits into it. I seriously couldn't understand the word Petra said. Its not that I didn't get it, its that I couldnt hear her right. The same way in Mariner's Revenge that I couldn't hear her say "Find him Bind him" over the music. Thanks for the clarification and awesome username btw

  • @Welihy Chimbley is another pronounciation of chimney. In england the it was common for the cleaners of the chimneys or chimbleys to be cleaned by a chimbley sweep.

  • how could 16 people dislike this, they are out of their minds, colin is pure badass

  • That looks like it would've been the coolest concert to ever go to! I wanna see em live even more badly now!

  • I love the kind of free spirit and fun atmosphere they can consistently give off.

You can tell just by watching this video that they make their shows a really fun experience and probably never get tired of playing the same stuff of playing for the same sorts of people.

  • Their shows are a lot of fun ! They did lots of silly things at the concert I went to.

  • Its alright, lifelikeweeds819, not everyone can have good taste in music.

    I love this song.

    And, this band is amazing.

  • No, I didnt say my taste was better. Merely that my point of view was simply that not everyone can have good taste in music.

My political views have nothing to do with this conversation, and I find it redundant and a bit amusing that you bring that up.

As far as sporting teams go, I could care less. So hurrah to your team.

But when you really get down to it, I was just making a joke about someone being an ass about a band, where as you brought in all this bullshit about me being biased. Hm

  • I agree with you on most of these points, and am happy to find you acting mature, however, what I think LLW was trying to say was that just because someone doesn't like a certain band, doesn't mean that they have a 'bad' taste in music, just a different one.

On the other hand, LLW acted childishly and went beyond stating his point by insulting you, which was uncalled for, nor needed.

In the future, please try to see where others are coming from before making hasty and false judgements.

  • I understand, and I wasnt trying to make hasty and false judgements, signore, more making a joke. I had forgotten how severely people take them online.

I do want to thank you for your neutrality though

And lastly, I feel (and this is for anyone) that if you really hate the band that much

then just don't watch their videos.

  • the fact that they're not douche bags, and i'm just curious, why do you look up the video if you don't like the band, no one has a gun to your head so shove your head up your ass and go listen to music you like and leave us decemberists fans to our own ways

  • what a fun video! go colin!

  • the comments in decemberists songs are so much more...affluent than other places...

  • These guys know how to put on a fucking show!

  • Very true

  • Damn this is a great video, will pass on to my fellow Decemberheads.

  • holy shit you people who post on youtube are smart.

  • This was great, would love to have attended this. Good music, nice talking, funny duel..all good :)

  • You Decemberists are so darn wacky!

  • A couple of the songs played in Starbucks (my work) were really lame, so for a while I really hated this band. But listening to them now, I've realized they're pretty awesome. Like. Really good.

  • Why is green fighting blue??

  • does it matter. This kicks ASS!!!!

  • lurve colin lurve.

  • Interesting. Most Decemberistas are hardcore Stumptowners...no Starbucks for them!

I, personally of the Seattle sort, don't mind the Starbuckaroos.

And I of course, now living in pdx, love the Decemberists. Yes, its mandatory.

  • people who hate on macs just can't afford them. haha.

  • That was comepletely irrevelent.

  • and the people who can afford them don't have the right to be a douche about it.

    posted from my Macbook.

  • AWESOME! Damn good video!

  • that was an awesome show!!! I had given some folks from the Decemberists -- including Jenny who's wearing a DIY dress she made from Star Wars sheets -- a tour of Skywalker Ranch that day and they bought those lightsabers in our gift shop. Little did I know they'd use them on stage! ;-)

  • Whoo!

  • Stephen Colbert totally PWNS their asses.

  • I can't believe they'd promote violence like this.

  • Emmmm... You DO know what violence is, right? This is promoting having fun, if anything...

Friggen sweet vid, though. I love the Decemberists and wanna see how far they go against Colbert :P

  • The Decemberists aren't a band that shies away from violence. (consider the Mariner's Revenge Song)

in any case, light saber fights aren't even that violent.

  • Stephen Colbert doesn't know what he's messing with!

  • Did Stephen Colbert say something about The Decemberists? I think I missed it ...

  • The Decemberists wrote a big blog about it on myspace yesterday about how he dissed them and accused them of stealing his lightsaber fight idea, within the blog it had a link to this very video :)!

  • They actualy think Colbert "dissed" them??

What a shock: Americans who don't understand satire.

  • i have no idea what colbert actually said, and on his website it says absolutely nothing about the decemberists. Perhaps this is too rejuvinate they're image after a slightly dissapointing latest album?

  • Sure it's no castaways or picaresque, but it's the one that's gotten them a lot of attention

  • yeah thats actually very true, I admire them for not just sticking with "if it aint broke don't fix it" and doing something very different like The Perfect Crime Pt. 2 and trying something new! I guess i just had high hopes after falling in love with the accordions and 12 stringed guitars of Picaresque and Her Majesty and so on

  • the decemberists actually had to post a bulletin about how this colbert thing was a joke, for people who didn't get it and for others, who like myself, had never heard of Steven Colbert previously and had no idea what was going on. I guess i'm not on the internet enough these days.

  • On his show colbert had a green screen challenge with light sabers where he dances around with a light saber and lets the fans make a video. Then the decemberists had a challenge for their fans in front of a green screen and this video has light sabers soooooooo he "challenged" them to a guitar battle

  • @oysteryogurt Stephen Colbert said their green-screen music video of O Valencia! was stealing his Green-Screen Challange. They then countered that he stole that from their on-stage lightsaber fight. They resolved it on an episode of the Colbert Report where Colbert had a rock-off against Chris Funk.

  • Oh my god what IS this crap? Entertainment for the under-educated? Please get back to me when they do something interesting.

  • "Under-educated"..?

So sorry that not everything appeals to yours tastes, but that doesn't give you the right to generalize a band/their fans as "under-educated". Lighten up a little.

  • wow, lots of negativity towards the Decemberists. What did they ever do to you other than be a great band?

  • This act is for people who think "different" always means "entertaining". It's for people who hang out at Starbucks, use Macs, hate Microsoft and like to use the word "edgy".

  • I do none of those things yuo associated with liking the decemberists. But hey i appreciate DECENT SONGWRITING

  • actually, i believe this is what's commonly referred to as "a band that enjoys itself." it's totally NOT cool, and they know that. they don't take themselves seriously. neither should you.

and just because it's not your taste doesn't mean it's "horrible." but you'll learn that as you mature outside of the internet.

  • Horrible is horrible, Skippy. They are pretentious poseurs.

  • What the hell did you find pretentious about this video? They're playing a song about fucking old ladies and they're fighting with light sabers...

  • You just answered your own question. Ever hear a story titled "The Emporer Has No Clothes"? I rest my case.

  • oh, and i just noticed you hilariously said the band didn't understand satire while you completely missed that the whole thing with Colbert was a joke. you know he actually likes them, right?

  • Someone sounds cranky and stupid!

  • I love the Decemberists, don't like Starbucks, and can't stand Macs.

    Whooo unfound generalizations!

  • Take a step back and actually listen to them, instead of being swept up by the pretentious "coolness" of it all.. The music is horrible.

  • Haha, I feel bad for you.

  • Ditto. The lyrics themselves, I find, are enough by themselves to keep my heart firmly tied to this wonderful band. Add some very talented instrumentals and we have one great band.

Now, let's say we stop for a second and think about the very true fact that everyone has different taste. It's not too hard to accept other peoples' tastes, is it? I accept that you think they suck, but I don't believe that every single one of The Decemberists' fans merely likes them because they're "cool."

  • actually, as an *actual musician*, that's right folks, I can tell you that Colin Meloy rights some of the most interesting and complex parts that you'll hear in pop rock today. And besides, talk about pretense! You swoop in to comment on a website about how terrible a band is, then start insulting its fans? You yourself could do for a slice of humble pie. If you don't like it, don't listen to it, but don't go marching around under the veil of the internet telling other people what to think.

  • thank you very much. that was a nice comment

  • No, he doesn't "right" them, he writes them.

  • haha, good call. I can't believe I actually rote that ;).

  • hahaha you mean "wrote" that

  • you're on a roll, good sir

  • one could even say I was on a wroll.

  • mhm, stephen is certainly in over his head :]

  • take THAT stephen colbert

  • That was fucking amaseing. Great Capture!

  • Thanks for postig this. I love Colin's lecture on Guitar duels. They are probably the only band around that can successfully get the entire audience on the ground for as long as they want them. The Decemberists rock.

  • Excellent video - a real treasure. Thanks for posting!!!

  • amazing.

  • The Decemberists are such a fucking great band.

  • I love at the end when eveyone jumps up. Thanks, great video. :D

  • Not a fan of concert videos but this one was pretty good.

  • Glad you enjoyed it.

  • wonderful <3

  • Don't worry 'bout the shaky parts it certainly captured the atmosphere.

  • I wasn't dancing, but nearly everyone in the venue was ... so much so that the floor was shaking. That's where the shaky parts come from. Sorry.

  • No problem, it's perfectly watchable. Great video and performance.

  • Thanks. :-D

  • were you dancing while making this video? I think I have vertigo now. And hepatits. And....liver prostate syndrome..........

    But seriously: shaking...
